Fantastic job, without the car being on the rotisserie that would be an sweful bit to repair, i can always smell the underseal when your grinding it off lol

Glad to see someone sent you a welding helmet. The air filter is a big plus. Now we just need you to use hearing protection more. The key is to use all three protections all the time as needed. We want you all to be able to these videos for a long time. And when you retire you will be able to see and hear and hopefully not have cancer or a lung disorder. We care about all of you guys. And you older guys need to set an example for Ryan.

It kind of feels right for Colin's car to be welded entirely with safety squints, but not breathing grinder dust or going blind is much preferable! Nice of R-Tech to send you that mask!

About time you guys wore filtered helmets. It’s not just eyes that’s will be affected long term but skin exposure to that very high UV light will result in skin cancers and then respiratory issues from the fumes from welding, as well as from burning off underseal and sealant buy removal with spinning wire brush

Going to sub because of the workmanship. I am new to welding and fabrication. My MOT man described my work last year as sticking metal together, to this year, atrocious welding. I am so proud that he included the word welding this year. He feels so so for me he is going to give me a free lesson! I gain so much watching professionals, even which tools you use and when.

I love watching you work. Your attention to detail is amazing. I'm new to welding, but it's a skill I've always wanted to learn. I'm learning it's not as intimidating as it appears, but as expected, it definitely requires a lot of skill and patience. I have one request speaking for lots of learners like me. The music is nice, but I'd really love for you or your son to do some voice-over explaining what you are doing and why. Simply naming the tools as you go would be helpful. I know most, but some are new. I know that takes more time, but it would add so much to your videos. I'm sure I'll watch the rest of your work on Colin's car, but that is what would bring me back for your future videos.

It's amazing just how much work has gone into de-rusting this bucket. I'm hazarding a cautious guess that the total amount of rust removal and panel reconstruction would cost more than what the car is really worth.

yes the cost would probably outweigh the value thats in the car , but we arent doing this to get you to bring your car to us or any specialist, we are showing you how to do this yourself at home with simple tools.

Well done to R-Tech for sending you the super air-fed welding helmet, but I think that you will find it too cumbersome for most of the kind of work you do. There are more compact helmets on the market and perhaps R-Tech would consider adding one to their range if you asked them nicely. Best wishes.

You make it look so easy. I have been doing localised repairs to the c pillars on my Citroen DS today. Even where the metal is cut back to good it is so thin and hard to weld without blowing holes. I have learned plenty of tips watching you and Ryan, many thanks.
@ToreDL87

What welder do you have? What's minimum volts and amps it can go? Issue with modern IGBT MIG welders is the cheaper ones, you know, the 200A the ones that look pretty much all the same but change logo's all the time which is what most folks seem to get, just don't have good enough internals for low voltage & amperage (for sheet metal). So they stop at 15 volts minimum if you're lucky, when ideally you wanna be at around 12.7-13.7. You can sorta get a little around the issue, dial the volts as low as the welder goes with just enough wire speed that it doesn't sputter, let the gas sorta "moosh" the tack. Another tip is to angle the gun slightly toward the original steel, but have the wire/nozzle aimed at the fresh steel, the new panel, which can handle the heat better, then once you have a pool going on the new steel, slightly jink the nozzle just a tad over to original steel, that way the heat draws the pool over onto the original steel and the gas flow will help "flow it outwards" as I call it, once you see you've got good bond (you'll be able to tell with a little bit of practice), instantly let the trigger go and let the tack/weld cool down before you start the next, that's what these video's don't show, the cooldown period, you wanna do 3-4 tacks then move onto somewhere else. Next time you look for a welder for sheet metal, you want one that can go as low as 10-15 amps and 12-13 volts, tops, that'll give you enough to work with, it's about how low so you get heat control for tacking sheet.
@steveworth544
@steveworth544 9 месяцев назад
@@ToreDL87 I have a gasless and also a gas mig welder. The gasless one welds down to 25 amps or less and is brilliant on 1mm steel that I am using for repairs but the metal in those c pillars (the flat, non structural parts) is only about 0.5 mm thick, like biscuit tin. Had very few problems on wings, doors etc.

Excellent work again! I used to strip underbody coating with a wire wheel as well, never did like it. Recently I've moved on to using a heat gun and a putty knife. Likely a personal preference, but it just works so much better and leaves less of a mess (granted, you have to still finish it off with a wire wheel or scotchbright disc)! I do the same with big thick patches of body filler by the way. I'm doing all of this in my garage mind, I don't really need all that dust on my stuff :)

Once done, ive always wondered what is the actual strength like on these cars? Just seems that even though the rust has gone, it's had so many cuts and patches, that even though it looks nice, in a crash it would fold up like an accordion! I just cant see it having the strength of the original shell!?
