In this video I am showing you the fairytale town Hamelin in the north of Germany. Hamelin is known for the story of the “Rattenfänger” (pied piper). The story says that the town used to have a plague of rats. One day a strange man came into town telling them he could remove all of rats, so they promised him a reward if he does so. He played the pipe and the rats followed him to the river, where they drowned. He came back into town, but they refused to pay him. He played the pipe again and the children followed him out of town, never to be seen again.
Anyways, it’s a super cute little town with a lot of historical buildings that is worth visiting. To see everything you will only need about 2 hours. There are many nice restaurants, our favourite is the Pfannkuchenhaus (pancake house) with traditional German pancakes in many different variations!

I lived in Beethoven Strasse in Hamlin from 1972 till 1976. It was the best place I’ve ever lived in. I was almost thirteen when I left. It broke my heart 👍.

@@NomadicSeasons It was awful. We are British and my father was in the army. We had such a good life over there. My German was coming along great too , but when we arrived back in the UK , it was only French that was taught at school. It wrecked my education in a sense 👍.

@@NomadicSeasons I didn’t unfortunately, but I’ve been back to Germany three times since. I went camping with a friend. I was the passenger on his motorcycle. That was a great two weeks. I’ve since visited Dortmund and Koln. Enjoyed it immensely too. I think I might visit Hamlin again though 👍.

Nice video 😊 Some say that the children that went missing were brought to the medieval town of Sighișoara in România, which has the same features as Hameln, and where you can visit the graveyard and see all the German names 😁
