FPV is awesome! And you probably should get into it... BUT!!!! There a few serious things to consider before jumping in. Matti touches on some of them, but I'd like to elaborate a bit. And give some specific places to start as a beginner. First, the DJI FPV drone is unequivocally the worst possible starting point. It's expensive and will not hold up well in a crash, and you will crash many, many times while learning. It's not what a lot of people want to hear, but the honest truth is, if you can't overcome the learning curve of the more DIY approach, you will be seriously handicapped as an FPV pilot in the long term. Even if you don't want to build from scratch, there are plenty of quality "bind and fly" prebuilt drones out there that are built out of the same frames and components we use when building DIY drones. Check out race day quads, get fpv, newbeedrone, pyrodrone, or any of the other reputable FPV retailers to see examples. They will be less likely to be catastrophically damaged in a crash and will be able to be repaired when you break something. Learning to make these repairs yourself will give you the skills and confidence to stay in the air and push your flying skills long term. Second, you need to take safety seriously. These aircraft can move very fast and carry some serious momentum and the propellers can and will lacerate flesh. If you fly irresponsibly, you can create a very real risk to people, property, and even manned aircraft. And more accidents will inevitably lead to more restrictions and regulations for everyone. If you want to fly FPV, please be a good ambassador. Third, it is a major investment of time as much as money, if you want to be truly proficient, be prepared to spend a lot of hours in the simulator and then proportionally as much flying the real thing. Which brings me to the best drone to start with - it's the simulator. Buy an inexpensive radio that can connect to your computer and get Velocidrone, Liftoff, or Uncrashed and practice on your PC. This will save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars, and help you determine if it's really something you want to pursue. FPV, much like filmmaking, is a long-term commitment to learning and growth; the technology develops and changes very rapidly, and there is always room to improve as a pilot. I would also be remiss if I didn't mention some of the RU-vid channels at the very foundation of the FPV community. (Something I wish Matti had done in this video.) Joshua Bardwell's channel is the definitive place to start as a beginner in FPV. Paul Nurkkala (AKA Nurk FPV) and Tommy Tibajia (AKA Ummagawd) are great resources for FPV in real production work and what it's like to fly larger drones carrying proper cinema cameras. Also worth mentioning for beginner info are channels like Nick Burns, Albert Kim, and Matt Pochwat with lots of reviews of inexpensive drone setups catering to the beginner. Finally there are excellent pilots who are enjoyable to watch, can be good inspiration, and have great communities and even discord servers full of helpful experienced pilots. (FPV isn't really that new it's just finally breaking out as a mainstream tool for filmmaking.) Some other names you should know are Botgrinder (check out his discord server), Mr. Steel, Slatt FPV, Alex Vanover... and there are loads more, but the best way to find them all is to get into the community and start learning!

FPV was life changing for me. Selfishly I like that the community is small, but I think more people should experience it. When you get good, it feels like a super power.

I joined the FPV community 6 months ago and I don't regret it at all. Very quickly people around me started to notice what I was doing and were really interested to hire me on some shoots to get those crazy indoors shots or immersive landscape lines. It is hard to learn, but the sensations you get from flying are just unbelievable. You quickly get addicted once you have passed the basics of manual (acro) mode and can go wherever you want. But you have to put in the time, the work, and a lot of money for sure. You must be willing to spend a terrific amount of money to get to the point where you feel confident to fly professionnaly.

I live in Kodiak, Alaska and one of my favorite things besides bears is orcas come right up through the channel and we can see them less than 20 yards away right in town with no boat needed. great vid too, really want to get the FPV soon!!

I passed the part 107 test for my drone license but the biggest thing stopping me from trying FPV is that legally (in the US) I have to have a visual observer there with me anytime I would fly an FPV drone. I can't always have someone come with me to film drone footage and I don't wanna drag my wife around every time I need to go shoot lol. For now I'll stick to normal cinematic drones.

Really great video again, love to see you guys having fun! 🔥🔥🔥 I really gotta say though I completely disagree with the notion that you "Should" learn FPV drone otherwise you'll "miss out".. If you're already someone who's really interested in drone flying or getting into FPV or just finds this whole genre of tech fun, then hell yeah you would love it if you go for it! But if you're not interested in it as a filmmaker or just in general, then you're not "missing out" on anything as a creative. Let's be honest it's a specific type of shot that isn't really used for many things at all.. Almost none of my many clients even ask for drone footage, let alone FPV footage. I think if you want to get hired as an action film/action doc drone flying specialist, then you will definitely excel in this area. Or if you want to just learn just because you want to, then amazing, that's just an added bonus tool in your kit and ability as a filmmaker! But you will not "miss out" on anything by not learning, I promise you 😊

When I clicked on this vid I was charging up, I was surprised it was about FPV! It is a life changing "out of body" experience. I fly GepRc CinePros in two configs (Freestyle/CineStyle) Analog with Skyzone 04x Goggles and Crossfire with the Tango 2. Fpv is amazing and well worth the time one puts in!

Interestingly enough this is the first YT video I'm watching since my first flight with my FPV drone earlier today 🤣 I wanted to get into it a few years ago before DJI released theirs but the electronics stuff was a little too out of my jurisdiction and I couldn't make much sense of it. I've always been good at flying games since I was a kid and all of those years playing games that had flying in them has really paid off! The muscle memory is nicely dialed in

Heck yea LETS GOOOOO!!! Just got an FPV a few days ago and it’s so RAD!! Get a lot of batteries!!! I practiced with just my phone in simulator at first before getting the drone. I flew my friends mavic pro platinum a few times (crashing it a few too ) and then broke an arm in a tree tracking a subject. Decided to buy the fpv two days later and had about 5 min of time in the fly app with controller and headset before taking it for its first flight. Honestly no need to practice before going in normal or sport mode if you’ve never flown a drone before as it’s pretty straight forward. However I will definitely be using the app once I get into manual mode and am comfortable with my spatial awareness. I only have 3 batteries for my fpv rn and I get about 40 min of fly time which is honestly probably great since I’m not too used to the headset yet. Today was my second flight and I am already in love but can see where you’d want a mavic for certain shots. I’ve had some serious fun and can’t wait to get some wicked transition shots or dives once I get tracking down. Thanks for the vid!!

Hi Matti, very inspiring and looks like a lot of fun ! Unfortunately in my country (France) FPV flying alone is prohibited unless you have a person with you that keeps the drone in sight to warn you against potential dangers and who must be able to land the drone for you just in case.. Also we need a license, drone registration, no more than 50 meters in flight height... So I'm glad to follow you and see what I could do if law wasn't so restrictive ! I went to Tofino once, most beautiful place in the world ! Enjoy and thanks !!

Yeah, Flying FPV is incredible fun and such a dream. Building durable quads is also a great joy too - because you can push a home made quad a lot further than the DJI FPV.

Fpv is what got me into flying. A year later and I have some great skills, really like the cinematic footage I can produce. Today I build a tune my own drones and if I could offer one piece of advice to anyone interested in starting, there's a huge selection of drones outside of the DJI world, from toothpicks to cinewhoops to freestyle rigs and more that all give you a slightly different cinematic look.

I just got one! So much fun flying with it! Curious to know how many batteries you have. I get less than 7 mins of flight time with the GoPro on top 😅
