Brings a tear to my eyes. So much of my childhood spent here growing up and at Sea World next door. Great memories.

Rode this many times as a kid. The third hill once was a double-dip hill. It was removed around 1980 and replaced with a slight downward straight-away.

This is so sad to watch. All my summers were spent here. I loved the Big Dipper! That was the best rollercoaster in the world! My world, that is. My friend and I had Season passes and one day, it was a little rainy. And the park was empty. So, we were allowed to keep riding the rides, without getting off! It was a blast! We went on the Big Dipper, the Mirage, the water rollercoaster. I can't remember the name of it. We had the park to ourselves and we took advantage of it! I remember the Chrysler picnics. My dad worked at Chrysler. And the food was provided. It was the best food I have ever eaten. Maybe that's because we were so tired from the walking and waiting in lines. That worked up a huge appetite. I have so many fond memories of Geauga Lake Park. I wish it was still around. R.I.P. Geauga Lake Park.😪

My Dad worked at GM . they would have there company picnics there . So much fun . went on the Big Dipper with my Dad . I was probably only 9 or 10 at the time . Still remember going over the first incline . I came off the seat . I don't remember any seat belts ,just a metal bar to hang on to . Loved Geauga Lake .

We had a nice old family amusement park here in Wichita called Joyland. It was the first amusement park that I remember going to. There was a potato chip company that would include blue plastic chips in the bags that we could use as tokens at Joyland, and at the end of the school year, there would be a couple of weeks where students could get free tickets depending on how many A’s, B’s and C’s they received on their report cards. It had the very first dark ride that I had ridden (and was terrified of for years after) and an AWESOME old wooden roller coaster. Unfortunately, the park was situated in an area of the city that is going downhill and crime was/is increasing. The park closed, reopened shortly, and then closed again. All of us Wichitans who wanted the park to be restored had hope until one spring day when a massive thunderstorm took out the lift hill. There is a video of the remaining section of the roller coaster being demolished on RU-vid. I agree with another commenter who commented that there aren’t enough good old wooden roller coasters anymore... and I’ll go on to say that there aren’t enough nice family parks where families can go for the day without spending $100.00+, worrying about crime, or waiting in huge lines...

The internet does make me laugh at times 🤣 If you had done two minutes of research you'd realize this was the very first time I ever shot the Big Dipper, exactly TWO whole days before they tore it down. So I'm gunna guess your comment holds no merit 😉 Nice try though 👍

Very sad to see things like this. Something that provided generations with laughter and good times. I'm glad I got to ride this ride about 2 years before the park closed. I also got to ride the other John Miller coaster at the old Americana park, the Screechin Eagle....2 credits I can be thankful for.

Cedar Fair owned it. They bought it from six flags just to close it. The park was doing so good . It started becoming better than Cedar Point. When Six Flags had financial troubles, they put it up for sale which unfortunately gave Cedar Fair this opportunity.

Rhett Krecic actually it did great as Geauga Lake for over 100 years. Sure smaller park 4-5 roller coasters & a water park Fun Times owned it 1969-1999 & sea world was a separate entity Owned by bush gardens Six flags bought everything in 2000 & wanted to compete with Cedar point

Nice combination of UAV & OSMO video. Liked the parts showing the platform where (dare I say) millions got on/off the ride. The Big Dipper wasn't the highest, or fastest of the wooden coasters. It was a fun ride, which provided pretty good "air time" at various points. I rode it many times. I understand that it is now completely "razed", not one timber left standing ... which is pretty sad. However, this video, and others like it, will insure that people who did ride it during all those years of operation, will be able to watch, and recall the fun they had there. As Bob Hope used to sing: "Thanks, for the memories ...."

Was raised 2 miles from Geauga Lake Park. Went there with my friends from 1952 to 1962. Took my wife on the coaster when she was pg with our first child in 62. She just made it through the ride - had to scrap her up. We always rode the back car. There is no words as to how I miss Geauga Lake and that time period. Thanks so very much for putting this on. Thanks Doug H.

Yes, Cedar fair bought the park awhile back. I think they purchased it to eliminate the competition. I don’t think the parks main appeal were the rides. Just that it was a far closer trip to keep the kids happy.

Glad you enjoyed the video! Hope you subscribe, and come back to enjoy many of the other projects we've produced this year. Over 100 videos in one year, actually... And with all due respect, Six Flags played a major role in the demise of this once great park. We can't put all the blame on Cedar Fair... (or can we?? hehehe)
@andypritchard9644

I think they were just trying to scale back the park to make it more of a complement and less of a competitor to Cedar Point. The only problem is they seemed to not care about the fans and longtime visitors enough to explicitly tell them this, and cared even less about them when attendance declined in the years of their ownership.

I was expecting an fpv view from a racing quad as it sped along the old track to simulate a ride. This cinematic approach is nice too though.

What a shame. I live down by Cincinnati so I go to Kings Island all the time, I never went here, but from the povs that I've seen the Big Dipper looked like a fun ride. They really should have moved it out of the park like quite a few of the coasters from Geauga Lake.

I don’t believe anyone could have saved the park. The ride although a classic steel wheel in track creation was not a masterpiece of engineering technology. The park had one major rival park with far clairvoyance for the future. It’s longevity was just based on population concentrations that opted in for the inferior park for price and longevity of travel time. With maintenance of structures needing major work in replacement for continued operation. They took the best offer they could get for the park. No one with deep pockets was willing to risk an investment. That offer was made by there competitor. They weren’t going to throw anymore money away on a losing proposition. Available space there was also a near impossible mountain to navigate. Property values there were astronomical. It was doomed for failure.

Think someone said its 72 bucks now.ugh!!!!!
