The end, where you see Jack Nicholson's character zombified, is the aftermath of a lobotomy. Hence the zooming in of the scar on his forehead. Chief realizes this and gains the courage to break free from the horribly run institution.

Nurse Ratched is one of my all time favourite antagonists. She’s so underhanded and quietly devious. Both Chief and McMurphy are free. Chief broke out and is able to go anywhere his legs can take him and he's smarter than the staff give him credit for(I think he'll get pretty far). McMurphy might be dead but at least he's not a prisoner in his own body. I think of McMurphy's whole thing being freedom and they couldn't control him so they lobotomised him, to me that means that they admitted defeat and whether or not you believe in an afterlife or a soul you can certainly say that he's no longer trapped there.

On a similar note, Mario Puzo, author of the Godfather, went on to write the screenplay for the Godfather film. The film was of course a success and he was commissioned to begin writing the screenplay for Godfather 2. Mario Puzo decided that, although he knew how to write books, he would take a course on screenplay writing to help with this only to find out that the film used as an example of good screenplay writing was, ironically, The Godfather.

Brandon Likes Movies well most authors do avoid their movie adaptations! For example Stephen King despises The Shining and Alan Moore thinks Watchmen might as well be the spawn of the devil. For this case I believe the author wanted Chief to be the main character and the movie to be from his perspective like it is in the book. But since Jack Nicholson is such a captivating actor and played the character of McMurphy so well they switched it so that he was the lead character thus enraging the author.

Nurse Ratched is a perfect embodiment of "the banality of evil." She seems like a quiet, normal nurse, yet her choices and actions slowly reveal that she relishes every bit of power she has - even if it's just the power to take things away from other people. Even if it's just the power to hurt people in a thousand little ways until they snap. And never once does she even consider the possibility that she might be wrong, or that someone else might have a better way of doing things.

The way she treats the mental patients with such contempt, I always thought she's the kind of nurse/doctor the Third Reich recruited to murder mental patients with an injection of phenol to the heart as a way of "putting them out of their misery." That's how good she was at playing the part - my mind connects her with the murderers of Hitler's empire. According to IMDB she was so distressed at the way she treated the patients when she watched the movie back that she was unable to watch it for many years afterwards. PS - I visited someone in a mental institution when he was in there for a few months (schizophrenic, meds stopped working, had to stay in there while they got the new combination of medication right to fix him) and this movie is 100% accurate. The kind of things you see the patients saying, the way you see them behaving... it's all 100% accurate to a real mental institution (except for the staff, the staff are very nice and caring nowadays).

The operation was a frontal lobotomy. It was very common up to the late 60's. In fact Rosemary Kennedy (JFK's sister)had it done because she was slow (thanks to a hospital that told Rose Kennedy, her mom to cross her legs and hold the baby in till they could get a doctor) The sad part to me about this movie is McMurphy (who only looked out for himself in the real world) finally sees and experience what the joy of giving to others is like only for that to come back to bite him in the ass.

This movie (and the novel it’s based on) is really personal and special to me. For reasons that were never explained to my mom, my grandmother briefly ran away from her family for seemingly ill-understood emotional issues. Not long after, she would come home, but only after she was put in a psych ward for a while. While there, she was forcibly subjected to electroshock therapy, suffering tremendously for effectively no reason. Thankfully, while it likely did permanent damage, it wasn’t enough to majorly hurt her quality of life thereafter and from what I understand she lived normally after that. That said, it was an incredibly traumatic experience for my mother, who was very young at the time. Neither of them deserved that and it makes my blood boil to think about the arrogance and stupidity of what passed for legitimate medical science at the time. Having dealt with severe issues myself, it’s not lost on me that I could have easily been in the same position, had I been around at a different time. The finale hits hard every time I watch it. Seeing Chief running free into the wilderness, having escaped that fucking hellhole, is moving in a way I could never fully communicate.

@@soccercal6043 It's a type of "procedure" that basically kills you as a person. Your abilities to function for yourself or feel emotions are significantly reduced or otherwise destroyed. I think roughly 80 years ago it was still used as a method for treating severe mental illness but there were occasionally cases where it was performed on patients who by today's standards were sane, the only other thing I know about it is that those who underwent the procedure would not live for very long afterwards. Either a complication would cause the death or the person would fall into a suicidal frame of mind then act on it. Personally I'd rather pick death.

Jack Nicholson’s character is given a lobotomy at the end of the movie. It’s an archaic technique that isn’t used any more so younger people might not know what it is. The Novel that the movie is based on is also much happier than the movie, as it is told from Chief’s perspective and his escape feels like a bigger victory because of that.

'Who's Candy? Is that like his girlfriend or wife?' beautifully innocent. This (in my opinion) is not really a story about mental illness, but about who decides what "normal" is, and how we shouldn't allow the power structure to tell us how we behave and how we live. To me Nurse Ratchet symbolizes the so-called Moral Majority who want us to conform to their version of the world-- and who are willing to eliminate anyone who doesn't

I second that, but as I have mentioned before on this channel, it's only currently available in an inferior Director's Cut version that drags the movie down. The only way is to see the original is either buy an out of print old DVD, or pirate a fan version that removes all the extra material.

@@dosnostalgic really? Im surprised. I first watched the director's cut not knowing it I just thought there was only 1 version. I loved it so much i went out the next day to buy the dvd and then watched it again that night and was super disappointed at a few of the missing scenes. There were 1 or 2 that i agree could have been left out but some that i found pivotal like when Stanza meets with Salieri, without this scene you have no less context as to her reaction to seeing him in her house at the end and I feel it is the pivotal moment when he fully embraces forsaking his childhood promise to God. Either way to each his own.
@dosnostalgic
@dosnostalgic 4 года назад
@@justind7211 I don't mind the scenes themselves, they are fine, they just ruin the pacing of that movie. That scene in particular could have stayed, yes, but it isn't all that pivotal. Her reaction in the end is justified by everything that has happened before, as Salieri had made the offer. That scene is also only a couple of minutes long, while the total difference between the versions is twenty minutes.
@NightshadeHalloway
@NightshadeHalloway 4 года назад
@@dosnostalgic I completely agree with you on your points about the director's cut! I've even advised the same points to others who haven't yet seen Amadeus. The pacing does indeed get way thrown off and some great musical cues segueing into next scenes get altered or removed. Even a bit of dark humor with Salieri is lost, as in the original cut there's an instance of him building his furious monologue only to stop himself and abruptly switch to Nice Old Man mode, but the director's cut totally wrecks the moment. Yes, all the extra scenes are interesting but putting them in, tweaking the editing, and basically changing the overall feel to the finished film did not make it better for me, personally. I got the theatrical cut DVD from a discount bookstore a few years ago. I almost wish I could send my copy to Brandon.

Newcomer to the channel, enjoying your reactions and all the great discussions. This movie came out in 1975, when I was 16. Thinking of what was going on at that time, Watergate had happened and President Nixon resigned the year before. It was also the year the Vietnam war finally concluded and America had lost their first war. The OPEC nations had just cut off oil imports to the USA, we were spiralling into a recession and inflation was out of control, eventually to hit 18%. So the country was in about as down a mood and trust in leaders, institutions and politicians had become non-existant. So the movie kind of reflected that and hit a key with audiences. I think it is a masterful movie, but I understand your reaction to the ending, it was the same as I had. I was cheering with McMurphy and his attempt to show the patients that they weren't the ones who were sick... it was the institutions and pointless rules that was driving everybody crazy. A couple trivia points (apologize if someone already mentioned these): Michael Douglas was one of the producers and essentially shared the Academy Award for best picture. Dr. Spivey, the one who interviewed McMurphy and had the picture of the fish on his desk was not an actor, but the actual director of the Oregon state mental hospital. He agreed to have the movie shot on an empty ward, if some of the real patients could be involved... he thought it was good therapy. Each actor had spent a week in the facility with the real patients and were given their characters "mental illness" to rehearse. Brad Dourif played Billy Bibbet and was nominated for an academy award. 25 years later he played Wormtongue in the Lord of the Rings movies. Finally the Chief was played by Will Sampson... also who had never acted before. He just fit the role physically and I think really nailed the performance.

Milos Foreman directed some interesting movies. Amadeus is probably one of his more accessible movies. Chinatown is one of my favorite movies OF ALL TIME. Jack Nicholson is great in that. The movie was directed by Roman Polanski though, so some may object to watching anything he made. Otherwise Prizzi's Honor is the Jack Nicholson movie I'd point you towards. Early on you picked up on what I think this movie is about. The system wants everyone to march in line, it does not want individuals standing out from the crowd. The nurse represents order, and the patients gain security from her at the price of their identities. Then McMurphy comes in and he attempts to disrupt things. He's all about individuality and freedom to choose. This makes him her nemesis since he represents everything she's trying to repress.

If you didn't notice, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" had an immense influence on "The Shawshank Redemption". Both stories are about men who get caught up in an oppressive system (the nut house/Shawshank prison); they're trapped both physically and mentally-- the men become dependent on the system and its routine ("institutionalization" as Red put it in "Shawshank"). In both, there's really harsh punishment if you do not conform. Then comes this free spirit (McMurphy/Andy Dufresne) who shakes things up and inspires the men within the institution, even inspiring some of them to break free from the mental shackles of their imprisonment. And now that you've seen this one, you MUST react to "Cool Hand Luke" and "Dead Poets Society", both deal with similar themes. The allegory: "Cuckoo's Nest", which came out in 1975, was an allegory of the culture wars of the 1960s and 1970s, it was a perfect microcosm of the counterculture movement that took place in America (and around the world) at the time. The '60s and '70s was a time period of great political and social revolution. In this time period, we saw the rapid rise of the Civil Rights Movement, the gay pride movement, the modern feminist movement, the sexual revolution, the nationwide (and worldwide) Vietnam War protests, the Watergate scandal became public etc. America was more divided than it had ever been in its history at that point and especially due to President Nixon, the Watergate scandal and the injustices against black people during the Civil Rights movement coming to light, and the atrocities of the Vietnam War becoming public-- all of this sowed an immense distrust in authority figures and the US government (i.e. "the Establishment" or "the Man" as in "the Man is keeping me down") by the majority of American population. The US government was viewed by the public as authoritarian and dictatorial hence the rise of all these movements and civil unrest. The allegory: Nurse Ratched and the mental institution represented the Establishment and McMurphy inspired the rebellion of the other inmates against her. Even though it's tied to the '60s and '70s, the themes are timeless. This film's a masterpiece.

As it appears in the novel: As it appears in the novel: Vintery, mintery, cutery, corn, Apple seed and apple thorn, Wire, briar, limber lock Three geese in a flock One flew East One flew West And one flew over the cuckoo's nest.

Billy, the stuttering guy, is played by Brad Dourif. He's the voice of Chucky and played Wormtongue in Lotr. He really is an amazing actor and especially does an amazing work in this movie and The Exorcist 3!

He won his third Oscar for this. And don´t forget his performance as Col. Jessup in A Few Good Men.

@@maxis5650 I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man that rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it...

@@Trapper50cal Wow, you got his lines down! Brandon should def react to A Few Good Men eventually. The courtroom scene is legendary.

@@maxis5650 Interestingly, many of the people in that scene have been interviewed by Rich Eisen (Sports Commentator) regarding the courtroom scene...Rob Reiner, Keven Bacon, Kevin Pollack, Noah Wyle...Some interesting takeaways about Jack and his process/ability.

Brandon, just some facts about the film: - Movie was based on the book of the same name - #33 on the AFI top 100 list. - Second highest grossing film for 1975. - Won 5 Oscars. Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress (Louise Fletcher), and Adapted Screenplay. - The film was a metaphor for freedom vs. control in our society. Nicholson/McMurphy represented freedom, Fletcher/Nurse Ratched represented control. The patients were all there voluntarily (except for McMurphy) and were not being properly treated. Ratched was all about control, and not allow them to explore life or even dig down what was wrong with them. McMurphy was presented as a free spirit. He installed hope and joy into their lives. Can't wait for you to see Nicholson's other great iconic role in Chinatown.

It's unfortunate but this is often what passed as mental health treatment even up to the late 60's. We think ourselves so far beyond this sort of 'medicine' but real actual mental health treatment is still in it's infancy compared to the rest of modern medicine.

Indeed. And patients are still regularly abused by an uncaring, apathetic staff that only sees them as annoyances, threats and numbers in a ledger. Not as human beings in need of empathy. -Source: Have been in and out of institutions since I was a kid
