@@donwalker3683 another scene that is just so low key cool, is when the Chief and McMurphy are sitting on the bench outside the room that zaps their heads, Randall unwraps a piece of gum for himself and offers one to the Chief. He takes it, unwraps it, puts it in his mouth, starts chewing, and then says, ummm, Juicy Fruit. McMurphy looks at him and completely flips because he hears and now knows the Chief has been able to speak and hear all this time. I might have to watch it again, just in time for the world series to start soon. There are so many memorable scenes it's just a great movie start to finish. Now its, medication time, medication time.
The fact he wasn't crazy but was treated as if he was the quintessential patient really gave the movie an almost philosophical meaning and really shined light on an important and underreported aspect of American history that's not recognized enough, mainly because it hasn't been solved and I don't think societally we've come to terms with that. We all talk about religious extremism like the witch hunts and racism such as African slavery but there's not a lot of emphasis on radical psychiatric treatment that took place.

This movie, helped destroy mental health treatment for people in the US. Completely changed the conversation domestically on how to treat people with mental illness. Unfortunately, not for the better.
That whole saltpeter myth about jail is real. I was a trustee and worked a kitchen job in multiple county jails across Florida and that juice that they give you with every meal has saltpeter in it. It's made in a huge container and they mix the flavoring with the water and they also measure out saltpeter out of a big jar that says not for human consumption on it. Saltpeter makes it hard for men to get erections and decreases sexual urges to prevent rape and sex between inmates. It's unconstitutional but they still do it. Nobody forces you to drink the juice though but everybody always drinks it cuz it's all they give you it's either that or a water fountain.
Oh we take shots, but it's more the strength of wine. Fruit, sugar and water lol it ferments I to alcohol. And you don't want to drink that juice. What do you think people do to pass all that time lol

This is one of the best movies ever. The message is "Even in the sanatorium, YOU JUST CAN'T STAND OUT. If you are able of critical thinking, just like Randle was in the movie, the ones who run the show, in this case nurse Rached, are going to sensor you and they will use ALL MEANS necessary. Just like nowadays.
Had this happen to me once because the courts thought I was another man but I refused to take my *MEDICATION* at the attending nurse said the same thing she did I told her that those orderlies can try but will end up with a crack skull or a broken neck and shortly after that the guy that was supposed to be there was checked in and I was allowed to leave
Well, 'modern' cinema is a bit of an exaggeration, we've only really had 'movies' since 1905. Talking movied since 1927 ( but the talkies took off in 1930's ), so maybe not *modern* but I do get the idea.
@@atadbitahistory9660 modern is a term of how things are done. Films have changed the way they do things but not too much, surprisingly, I would absolutely still call this modern. But im not going to sit and pick apart one word for nuance, as I'm not that type of person.
