Working from top to bottom, I moved onto shaping the legs and feet of the Modern Athena. This meant digging deep down into the stone and back in order to reveal her right leg and make it proportional to the rest of her figure. The left foot also had to move much lower into the stone and after weeks of stone removal, both legs were finally were they needed to be...
"Over twenty years ago, I dreamed of carving a female figure of major stature - a Modern Athena on the scale of Michelangelo’s David out of a single block of marble. It seemed an impossible dream. However, in 2014, a friend offered me some blocks of marble and I began teaching myself how to carve stone. In the ensuing years, I have exhibited and sold works nationally and internationally, along with completing residencies in Italy and Greece. I am currently carving a small scale version and releasing weekly progress videos on social media. The Modern Athena sculpture is about breaking limitations, for myself and anyone." - Jyl Bonaguro
