just imagine them being super happy about the gift lol.. this happened when my wife decided to buy me the botta design uno 24 automatic which displays the entire day at a glance, couldn't help myself at first and laughed so bad, but I'm using it actually everyday since and couldn't imagine wearing a "normal" 12 hour watch again. ;D
As I get a little older I find that readability is more and more of a priority, so I'm not sure how this one would work for me, but man it is a really nice clean design.
You don't have to worry much about the readability, you can read the time on the one-hand clocks intuitively. What I like about Botta Design watches is that the dial is not cluttered. That's why it's even easier to read the time. If there were umpteen different applications on the dial (date, moon phases, ...) then I would be with you. That would be rather annoying. But when the dial is so classically minimalist, you can read it very well.
I just bought an Iron Annie from your store. I look forward to doing future business. Your prices are right in line with the market, and you take the time to go through these watches for us newbies to the hobby (my collection if only 12 deep at this point). It is appreciated, so of course you can have the business!
They’re not for everyone, but when you factor in the design, uniqueness, and quality, whether it’s the quartz, or the automatic, it definitely fills a niche. Even the watch snobs would have to have acknowledge that these are pretty cool.
Thank you Marc, you probably hear this all the time but I've only been into watches for over a year now(discovered my love for horology at 44) and 95% of what I know about watches I've learnt from you.
Interesting unusual watches but i can't help thinking that they look like weighing scales...and the Bauhaus design is just not resilient to changing tastes
Bought my first single hand UNO watch back in late 90s from the Watchmakers. Klaus Botta continued the UNO and since then I’ve had 5 or 6. Love the design. Last 2 were automatic and Im sorry to say they only lasted 6/7 years. Charge for service was over 1/3 of the purchase price. Botta has doubled the price for an automatic Uno. At Eur 1400. Not worth it, but I still miss it on my wrist. Watches are fascinating tiny machineries and works of art(esans). ❤️
Great to have your overview of these one-handers. Nice, clean design, but seems to me more of a watch one would wear for the style, not for practicality.
Ice blue waffle dial. What a beauty I love your watches Marc it is a true reflection of yourself as well as proof that you know what needs to go into a watches design. I've been contiplating getting one, but I just wish you where a 1000 miles closer to me 😭 lots of respect from Cape Town ZA.
That's right, but Klaus Botta was the first designer to develop this concept. Botta developed the one-hand watch and won several prizes for it. In 1986 he developed the one-hand watch and set off a trend with it. Several other brands followed this trend.
I have always wondered how you would tell the time on these watches now i know. Thanks for the education Marc that is what i like about your channel very informative.
Thank you Marc! Botta seems an Italian surname! :-) Also "UNO" means "ONE" in Italian! The pricepoint seems a little high, if you compare them to a Luch other than to a Meistersinger, which is more expensive. The Botta dials are stunning! I really like the design! Thank you for sharing!
For this quality, the workmanship and the materials that are used, I don't think the price is too high. There are also the quartz versions, you don't necessarily have to choose the automatic version. I think it's good that you have a choice at Botta Design and don't have to compromise on which model you want just because this model is only available in one of the two variants.
I have to say I have been wearing a one handed watch for about 5 years now. I love them. A positive & negative aspect about them: their movement is silent. So, if the battery dies, you might not be able to tell. But you don't have the distracting tick, that is associated with most clocks/ watches. I don't own an Uno (I have a Kulte), and want something not as expensive as the Uno, but more expensive than the Kulte. The Kulte is about ±$60.
Very interesting products. Only the 40mm size will work for me, but for those with larger wrists, lotsa choices! Glad to see you mixing things up, Marc.
The size doesn't just depend on the diameter. The height of the case also plays an important role. The higher the case, the more massive the watch appears. So 40mm can have very different effects. You can have the Botta Design watches sent to you and try them out at home. So you could try the size. You can read that in the FAQs.
Very impressive design. Those German watch makers know what their doing! I’m leaning more on a Nomos for any German watches on my wrist ... but it comes at a higher price unfortunately. At this price, the design is great with a simplistic dial but the double sided AR coating is a no-go for me; the top coating will scratch, regardless if it’s on a Sapphire crystal ... oh well 🤷🏼♂️ Thanks for sharing!
Very refreshing design, looks very clinical. Gives a hospital vide, maybe it's just me. The 12 hour ones have 5 min intervals as compared to the 24 hour ones which have 10 minute intervals.
Mark I like the no BS presentaion you do. Just watches and value for the buck. I was wondering if you could do a show on a real low costing watch and a realy expensive watch, and point out why Theres a price difference. Like dial work, movement decoration, stuff like that.
Thank you for sharing - these have a very nice aesthetic. Do you think the 44mm would work on a 7.25in wrist? BTW, I like the changes you made to your website (filter, search bar, etc.).
I hate being broke and seeing some of these videos. You’ve showed more then a few watches that I’ve been like if I had the money I’d be throwing it at you Mark. But due to COVID I’m homeschooling five kids and our income has been slashed. But I love seeing your videos and dreaming about what I can get some day.
Idk Marc, I think these are gunna be a tough sell. $500-600 for a $25 quartz movement inside a one handed watch... Or $1,500 for a handed ETA? If I was crazy enough to spend that kinda scratch on a mono hander I'd save up a little more and buy a preowned Meistersinger. Appreciate the video though. I still own the one hander from Red Star that I bought off you about a year ago. In all that time I've never worn it. Still has the sticker on the back but I can't bring myself to sell it. Atleast that one was only about $100.
Meistersinger is a master thief. He was previously in sales at Botta. Botta is the original! In addition, there are no 24-hour clocks at Meistersinger.
When I am tracking the time that is more than an hour, I set the bezel marker against the hour hand instead of the minute hand. The time difference is calculated using the hour hand similar to these great looking one-handed watches.
A question and an observation. Why do they start the morning hours at the bottom of the watch instead of the top which is the norm? Is there some kind of technical reason for it? Also... I see no difference in buying the quartz vs. automatic. The single hand sweeps on both models and there is no visual difference. Battery change vs. a service. Which would you choose?
I'm torn. On one side, I REALLY like the Bauhaus style, on the other I'm not a fan of the one-handed operation. The 24-hour ones are great looking, though.
I hope you do a video someday on the water resistance ratings and the complete BS they represent. I just dont understand how 5bar or 50ft cant be considered a watch you would NOT swim with? How does an entire industry get away with labeling something like this and yet we cant swim in water that is rarely 10ft deep? I would love to know your take on why that is.
Attractive and clean design but the concept itself is just 'form over function'. Most people want to know the time to the exact minute when looking at their watches.
@@islandwatch Haha :) I would use the design of a single-hand watch with a single minute hand and a rotating disc underneath the main dial marking the hours. Simillarly to the date complication seen on e.g. Nomos Metro Neumatik, (which actually marks the date instead of the hour with a red disc). One could keep the the simple minimalistc design with proper functionality and legibility. Maybe on a single-hand Islander watch someday :) Keep up the good work, Mark!
