As a Brit it is so surreal to hear you call "Don't Stop Movin'" the failed follow-up. I've heard that song played ten thousand times and never once out of choice.
They won their first Brit award for it and I think it was either their biggest hit or 2nd one behind reach? So yeah, hardly a failed follow-up. But I suppose he meant failed follow-up in the us.
Never Had a Dream Come True sounds exactly like the last song in a 90s low-budget animated movie about a fierce princess who has trouble with a wizard and falls in love with a wise-cracking prince who has He-Man hair. If I close my eyes I can see the credits scrolling

S Club 7 had to change their name to S Club, because this group now has 6 members since Paul Cattermole passed. 3 months after the tragic news, S Club made their first song in 20 years, called “These Are the Days”, which is about the group not only reminiscing about their time in the spotlight as one of the UK’s most well known acts, but it’s also dedicated to the late Cattermole, as the music video also emphasises some of their memories with him and how he was respected by the group. In my opinion, I thought the song was just okay, but as a send off to a member that passed, they did wonders in giving his legacy a swan song. EDIT/Correction: S Club actually changed into their current name in 2002 as a result of Paul’s departure from the group due to his complaint about the group’s management, and he also pursued a career in performing as a metal singer in his own band, Skua. It had nothing to do with him passing, it was more to do with him not being happy with how things were being handled for the group.

JennyCThree - It's complicated. At first, she was merely remembered as a novelty one-hit wonder in America for "The Loco Motion". While she continued to be enormously successful in Australia and the U.K. afterward, she was a one-hit wonder over here for thirteen years. But then she scored another hit in 2001 out of nowhere with "Can't Get You Outta My Head". She had a couple of other minor hits off of that album, too. While she never had another official chart hit after that, she continued to be successful basically everywhere else. She's basically Australia's queen of pop. She's an icon, but over here she's relegated to cult icon to people in the know (or queer folks). I honestly don't know why she struggled to maintain relevance in America. She was so successful in Australia and Britain, you'd think that she would be just as big in America, but aside from scoring that second hit out of nowhere in 2001, it just didn't happen for her.
This song was the Number 1 in the UK charts on the 9th of December 2000. On the 16th of December 2000, Eminem feature Dido was Number 1. And then the next UK number 1 was Can we fix it by Bob the builder on the 23rd of December 2000 which ended up being the best selling single of 2000 in the UK. This should tell you that the UK music charts is both weird and fantastic.

Ah man, as a guy who grew up in Britain (UK) in the 90's/2000's hearing S-Club being referred to as a "one hit wonder" is jarring to say the least it felt as though the hits would never stop from this band back in the early 2000's. Between them Steps and maybe spice girls they owned that era for pop music

Best S Club 7 output was Rachel Steven's extremely short-lived collaboration with Gorillaz, if you can call "dated the fictional singer only to leave him because the fictional bassist kept trying to hit her up and she got sick of it" a collaboration. Still, good sport in the name of having a poke at manufactured pop. (She even took part in a Channel 4 mockumentary about them called Charts of Darkness, which was pretty great if very early-2000s)
I'm Australian and I was also very confused to see S club 7 described as a "one hit wonder" because they were massively popular in the tween demographic here. Impossible to get away from.
You wanna know why S Club 7 has the format they have? You wanna know why they kinda remind you of the Power Rangers? You wanna know why Simon named his show Pop Idol? He took a MASSIVE piece of inspiration from the Japanese Idol culture, big pop bands with 5-75 members, each with their own character. If 7 or less, they usually have the popular colour coordination you see in almost every Japanese show, where each colour represents a character archetype, which is why Power Rangers have those colours. Simon started a bit with it when he made Spice Girls, but didn't go full out until he made S Club 7. That's why he made the TV show to go with it, to really sell the idea of them as idols, not a band. And when that well dried up, he went in search of the next set of idols... with the show Idol. He didn't even try to hide it. He didn't have to. It would take 20 years until the Japanomania would sweep over the western world and people would realize what it was he was doing. 2 decades of others trying to replicate what he did without even knowing the formula.
That actually makes a lot of sense... except part of the last paragraph. Look, Power Rangers started airing in 1993, while Sailor Moon, Pokemon, and DBZ gained traction in the US in 1998. Japanese media (or, in the case of Power Rangers, reworked versions of such) had been coming over way before 2010... and before the 90's, but the point is, it was very much out there in the late 90's. Yes, Japan's music didn't make it over in the same way its animated programs or comics or video games did. Yes, the internet made access to media and information in general much easier. So yes, the connection would be much easier to see in 2013 than 1993. However, unless Japanese media in Britain really only gained traction in 2010 (and I'm no expert; maybe that's the case), the connection would be much easier to see due to advances in information access, not it taking '20 years until the Japanomania would sweep over the western world'.
George Andrews Hate to break it to you, but Power Rangers is not japanese. It uses some footage from a Japanese set of shows, that's not the same thing. The anime shows that ran were so modified there's hardly anything left of the Japanese culture in them. That's not even near comparable to the Japanomania we see in the western world today, where they take actual Japanese culture and try to understand it and integrate into it, rather than assimilate it.
@@ordinarychef The modern anime culture started with proper anime shows, though. Shows like Sailor Moon, Fist of the North Star and Muumin. When broadband became a thing, and later when it expanded rapidly, and it became common for every household to have at least one computer (around 2002-2003-ish) people realized that those shows were dubbed and that the original language ones, which were suddenly widely available, had very different content. They had not been put through a filter of helicopter parents' thoughts on what is appropriate for kids to watch, so people started watching the originals instead. And from there they discovered ones that hadn't yet been dubbed... Pokemon has always been seen as a very western show, unlike most other Japanese and Korean animations, so I doubt that played any major role in the modern otaku culture.
It's hilarious that Take That would be considered a one-hit wonder when they still sell out stadiums across the UK and Europe. Less than a decade ago they broke the record by playing eight nights at Wembley.
I had a friend in middle school with English relatives. I remember going over to her house after her cousins had recently visited, and she had become obsessed with the song “Bring It All Back.” We spent a whole afternoon listening to the song on repeat making up dance moves. Surprised to see they were one hit wonders in the US. Anyone who was between 7 and 10 in Britain in 1998 had all these songs burnt into their brains round the clock. People's parents got into them too. Its like the whole country was in some kind of weird cult for two years.

Jesus Christ, I still find it weird how many huge bands and artists fail to make it to America. These guys obviously but also Take That (and by extension Robbie Williams), Cliff, Blur, Oasis, T. Rex, Busted, McFly, The Jam. It's weird what breaks the States and what doesn't
Oasis, Blur, and T. Rex all had huge hits in the US. I remember them quite well. Unfortunately, nothing much else ever became of them in the US. Those hits were Champagne Supernova, Song 2 and Bang a Gong, and pretty much nothing else that I remember. I think Oasis did have more hits in the US, I just don't remember any. I've heard their name enough to know they did a bit more than just one hit. I don't remember any of the others, nor S Club 7, although I was 16 in 2000, so a bit too old for S Club 7 by time they came around anyway. And also, I'm not a girl, so I doubly wasn't in their target demographic. It does make me wonder what groups that are huge in the US that don't do anything in the UK or Australia. Are there such group? Surely there are, but I really don't have any way to find out.

I'm SO upset blur is only known for song 2 in the US. they have so many amazing songs and their most jokiest song was the one that topped the charts there.
Something you didn't mention is that Jo, Paul and Bradley reunited before 2015 to do University tours as S Club 3 and do all their old hits. In fact, they came to my Uni one year and my housemate ended up sleeping with Bradley. So there's that.

It isn't discussed by Todd in the video but apparently, their manager (Simon Fuller) basically got them to sign a contract that meant he got pretty much most of the money the band made. They were on about £150,000 (or $186,622.50) a year and that's it. That was a lot of money then for a young person but wasn't going to make them millionaires.
Pop music is a shit business I heard that they made about £150,000 each over the whole five years they were together. Probably slightly more than the average wage at the time. But think about the brutal schedule that they had, and all the millions they made for other people (especially sleazy Simon Fuller, who pocketed most of the royalties). Poor Paul had serious financial issues in his later years.

I agree, I was a kid when they were big, 23 now and still love their songs. They made so many bops! I know a lot of other people around my age who still love them and are very nostalgic for them.
Did you know that Kylie Minogue giant comeback single "Can't Get You Out of My Head" was originally written for S Club 7? I can't image the song becoming one of the biggest hits of the 2000s if the band performed it. Which is presumeably why Simon Fuller passed on it. But just imagine.

Literally I discovered this song through Pokémon AMVs in sixth grade and every time I talk about it no one has any clue what I’m talking about. I’m addicted sappy music like this and I think it’s a bop, but I had no clue about the tv show.
@@UnrealPerson If you listen to the Pokemon albums, you'll find a surprising amount of sappy ballads with production just like this. S Club 7 really isn't too far off genre for the filler songs on those albums.
@Rarsonic Rintil Flying Without Wings by Westlife is in this video as a prime example of “sappy pop” and that’s one of the credit song in Pokémon 2000. The 2000’s were great.
So I'm back watching this after the passing of Paul, and here's something that gets me about this song. I remember watching S Club 7 back when I was a kid, and I remember when they were huge. I never recognised this song till I watched this video and here's why. In Australia, this song never charted, despite them being pretty big in Australia. They are defintely in a category of One Hit Wonders of artists who failed to make it big in the US. Also a fun fact for the Junglists, Bradley appeared on the DnB classic Back To Your Roots. I'm not making this up.

I was about 7 or 8 then, so I guess it's the same story. It probably helped that I also loved Nsync, Britney Spears, and Christina Aguilera so it was already in my young wheelhouse. Even now I still have a soft spot for cheesy late 90's/early 00's teenybopper pop because it's so nostalgic to me.

It’s hard to explain why the British pop scene was so unamerican in the 2000s, I guess we were turning towards the European scenes happening at that time instead of the American ones? It’s definitely easier to draw a line from S Club, Steps, Fast Food Rockers, Scooch, Lolly to Vengaboys, Aqua, Cartoon, than to almost anything in America. The only American act I can think of that inhabited the same space is Daphne and Celeste, and they didn’t impact the USA either. I will say tho, many British millennials adore the scene of that era to this day (myself included). We know it’s low-brow and formulaic and produced, but it’s too fun and nostalgic for us to care. Also, just noticed Vengaboys only had one top 40 hit in the USA so.........get on it pls
Honestly, I've gone back and examined both pop scenes from that era as well. I was only 7 during Y2K, so I was the perfect age demographic to be a target for that market. The UK scene was way too... "corny" for the US market. Too happy and chipper and kiddie. And just all around campy and even cringey to go back and look at. And it was very unapologetic about it. That's the reason that Daphne & Celeste never became a thing here, despite being from here- they tried to break through but failed because of how god awful corny their material was. But it fit right into the UK market. Those other corny acts from the UK only had maybe one hit here if any, because we didn't want that stuff. From a yank looking at past UK hits of... anytime, there was a lot of niche, a lot of novelty, a lot of corny stuff that never would have made it here. But also the exact opposite, such as Kate Bush, who tbh sometimes merged both of these descriptions. Aqua had one hit. Vengaboys had one hit (and a minor second one). Cleopatra only had one hit. B*Witched had one hit. Hell, let's even count Rednex as a one hit wonder, although they pretty much were in most other places too. All of these bands were just too corny for people here to tolerate for more than one song. Our music isn't that happy-go-lucky on most occasions. The US pop scene back then... much more "mature". And it really wasn't, but it seemed so to us. The songs I listed above were only played on kid's networks like Radio Disney and Nickelodeon, if even. Whereas the teen pop acts here- Britney, BSB, NSYNC, Xtina, etc. were played on mainstream radio and TRL. And this also explains why so many boring, sappy ballads became huge hits. They were seen as "mature". I hated them though even back then lol. The upbeat music was as Todd explained. In-your-face, full of mean, aggressive attitude. Not too childish. Oddly enough, plenty of UK-famous acts had this sound- but when they tried to crossover, they failed and also landed in one hit wonder territory. 5ive. Samantha Mumba. BBMak. Westlife. Craig David. They all sounded like they could have been big here, but never were. Why? Well that's just patriotism and nationalism that people here are known for- can't let too many foreign acts get big! It goes in and out in waves obviously, since there have been several "British invasions" on the music scene, and Swedish acts seem to have good luck here too, as do Canadians. But at that time, after letting the Spice Girls in, the border patrol would not let anymore British acts dominate like that (and tbh they only had one #1 hit here IIRC). The times had changed again a decade later though. Biebs ruled this place for a while. Drake still thinks he does. As for British acts, Adele. One Direction (and specifically Zayn). There was a period of 41 weeks from 2015-2016 where every #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 was from a non-American act. (Which was broken by Desiigner... let's forget he existed) So yeah, sorry for that entire essay lmao. But even today these differences still exist, but to a much lesser extent. We do get more novelty hits now- we did prior to the Y2K era as well, but after Macarena, they slowed the fuck down. It seems in the UK, they didn't slow nearly as much. Also, the UK definitely has a way bigger variety of popular music. Stray from one or two of the formulas over here, and you're a nobody. I'd assume it has to do with political differences even, on a deeper level. But who knows.

The British certainly have a lower tolerance for silly or campy songs these days, today’s big names like Adele, Ed Sheeran, Dua Lipa, Little Mix probably wouldn’t touch a novelty song even though many of them have bubbly fun personalities, while Comic Relief and Children In Need haven’t had a novelty release since at least 2011. It’s a shame really, although I could see there being a bubblegum pop revival in the future as 90s nostalgia gives way to 00s nostalgia
It's only fairly recently, with the advent of social media, that the charts have started to become more similar. All through the 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s, the UK and US charts were often very different

The only S Club 7 songs I knew from my childhood were Bring It All Back and Have You Ever. I only discovered Never Had a Dream Come True 7 years ago when I bought Now That's What I Call Music Volume 7
It's a song I know everyone was losing their minds over at the time but I instantly hated it so much I erased my memory of it. It's also one of those songs that is so harmless I know it only got popular because the religious zealots actually allowed their kids to listen to it instead of Destiny's Child's Bootylicious. Strangely I do remember that being the year that Nickelback started getting really popular.
Believe it or not these guys were huge in Canada and their first three albums all went gold and platinum in Canada. Their shit was always on the radio and on tv. Their tv shows were popular too. It was a time when a lot of British pop acts were being pushed in Canada
Okay so I'm NOT crazy! I'm Canadian and I remember these guys were everywhere. My older cousin was obsessed with them, and a few of my classmates were big fans as well. I even had a couple of the dolls. So seeing them referred to as a One Hit Wonder threw me through a major loop.
Literally every S Club 7 song EXCEPT the one that got big in America was a big hit here in Australia. From what charting information I could find, "Never had a dream come true" charted around the end of 2001 (literally a full year after it's release) and BARELY cracked the top 50

Can you do one on Rachel Stevens herself? She had a few hits like, “Sweet Dreams my LA Ex” and “Some Girls” but when her second solo album came, it failed commercially even though it was really good! And I’m pretty sure she hasn’t made music after that
S Club 7 were absolutely MASSIVE and inescapable over here, they had at least 5 smash hits and people still love them to this day, mainly for the nostalgia. If you go to a cheesy pop club night expect a lot of S Club.
Yeah as a Brit pretty much every S Club hit hits some deep part of me that lights up the dopamine receptors when I hear it, I think it's the 8 year old somewhere within.
Funny enough, I've heard of the song when I was a kid listening to Radio Disney, but never knew the band until last year. I went to a concert that had random bands from the 90's like B*Witched, Atomic Kitten, East 17, and Liberty X. S Club was there, but there were called S Club 3 since only three members could make it. Then one of them got hurt before the concert, so we all called them S Club 2 that night. It was Bradley and one of the girls... maybe Tina???... singing Bring it All Back, S Club Party, and of course this one. That was when I was like, "Oh THEY'RE the ones who sang that song.
Wow - i went to the Tasmanian leg of that tour, and the 3rd member pulled out of that show as well . It was just Tina and Brad. They invited a fan onstage to sing a track with them at one point. Unfortunately they picked the drunkest lady in the room, she just staggered around on stage then screamed unintelligibly into the mic, before cuddling and groping Brad until they cut the song off early and sent her on her way. Probably back to the bar. Won't lie it was an awesome night .
Interestingly, Have You Ever's children in need version has childrens choirs on the chorus which were recorded across the UK, and has the world record for the most individual voices of any record. I'm on it somewhere :)
Strangely, the first part of the main melody of "Never Had a Dream Come True" is almost note-for-note the same as a melody that was used a lot in a Catholic hymn I heard in Mass a lot in the early 2000s. That melody isn't really used anymore since the Mass was re-translated in 2011, but that's exactly what I heard in Todd's piano intro.

I get the impression Todd actually cares about country music, and is absolutely horrified at what it's becoming as a genre, which Bo highlights beautifully. I'm not even into country all that much (although I love how the women in the genre are completely gung-ho about murdering their exes- it makes for some great breakup songs), but there's a clear difference in what older country was and the weirdly misogynist, nationalist, ego inflation contest so much of it is now.
Fif Gallag As Bo says when introducing the song, he has nothing against honest country music with a good moral. The problem lies more in the stadium country music that’s just there to pander and sell things. The Bud Light with the logo facing our brand of country music.
I actually really like some stuff from Racheal Stevens. Some Girls was a amazing hit, produced by Richard X, who is honestly talented in making some of the best electro-pop in the UK.

This song reminds me of the really shallow 80s movies that I absolutely adore when I reminisce about them but can't enjoy when I actually watch them. Like Mannequin or Batteries Not Included. Todd says a ballad has to be personal, not abstractions about universal experiences. Maybe that's true for truly great ballads, but I quite like the depictions of what is universal in this song. My wife is a dream come true, and before I met her I yearned for a dream come true kind of love. It appeals to both versions of me from both eras. Pretending to move on pretty much is the only kind of moving on. I like the bittersweet explorations of that shared experience. I do wish it was more thoughtful about those things, though. And less repetitive. And left some impression of who wrote it or is singing it.
