One in a Million: The Ron LeFlore Story (also known as Man of Passion) is a 1978 American made-for-television biographical sports drama film telling the story of Ron LeFlore, a troubled Detroit youth who rose from Michigan prisons to star in Major League Baseball with the Detroit Tigers. The film was based on LeFlore's autobiography, Breakout: From Prison to the Big Leagues.
The film follows LeFlore from his heroin addiction, to his time in Michigan's Jackson State Penitentiary, and tells of his discovery in prison by Billy Martin, who was then the manager of the Detroit Tigers. The role of Ron LeFlore was played by LeVar Burton. Larry B. Scott portrayed Ron LeFlore's younger brother.
Former Detroit manager Billy Martin played himself, and former Tiger players Norm Cash, Bill Freehan, Al Kaline, and Jim Northrup also appeared as themselves.
The movie first aired on CBS on September 26, 1978 and was released theatrically in Europe.
LeVar Burton as Ron LeFlore
Madge Sinclair as Georgia LeFlore
Paul Benjamin as John LeFlore
James Luisi as Jimmy Karalla
Billy Martin as Himself
Zakes Mokae as Pee Wee Spencer
Larry B. Scott as Gerald LeFlore

It was in 1978 or 79 that I went to a Detroit Tiger's game and waited outside the old Tiger Stadium players parking exit waiting for LeFlore to drive out. After more than two hours after the game ended, sure enough the great Ron LeFlore drove out in a late model green Thunderbird (I think) with two hot white chicks in his car. I ran like hell after his car on Trumbull Avenue screaming for him to stop and sign my One In A Million book. He stopped in the middle of Trumbull, lowered his car window and laughed asking me what I wanted. I said to him can you please sign my book as "Twinkle Toes Boscoe" and he laughed so hard and said he couldn't, but did sign Ron LeFlore and shook my hand. I am now 60 years old and I just wanted to thank you again Mr. LeFlore for one of the most memorable moments of my life. I think about that day from time to time and I thank the Gods that I was lucky enough to have crossed paths and share my appreciation with one of my life's greatest heros and one of the most electrifying major league baseball players in history! Earl Marshawn Washington, artist. Born 1962 And thank you Mr. Donaldson, my amazing Pony League baseball coach, Ron LeFlore's cousin.

1979 was Rickey’s rookie season , so I’m not gonna point out the statement you so foolishly included in your comment provoking me to respond in this manner , and I certainly won’t waste any additional brain power identifying the man who actually was the best base stealer in the world ( at that time or any other throughout the entirety of humanity for that matter ) by his last name , but cmon man , I believe an apology is certainly in order

I saw this movie a few times in the 70s, and still can't get over how many brothers back then was in prison. it's 2021 and we're still out numbers everyone. but we know the reason why. Levar Burton playing Kunta Kinte on TV got me hooked on Roots. The fear in his eyes was very real for me, it wasn't acting any more. He was reliving the times, the essence of the period. Its funny seeing Billy Martin described as a "Detroit Icon" when Ill always associate him with New York!

Billy Martin made his bones with the Tigers first and later had success with the Yankees.

This just shows the power of directing, script-writing and editing that this show was loaded with gifted actors, many of whom went on to huge careers, yet much of the dialog feels no more or less clunky out of their mouths as it does from people like Billy Martin and Mickey Stanley. Al Kaline, on the other hand...

Billy Martin is a surprisingly good actor. The movie has aged well.

Anybody know why all the Tigers players played themselves except for Mickey Stanley? I would have like to have seen see Stanley in this movie like we got to see all the other actual players on the team.

I just think it must be a testament to how much they liked and respected the real Ron for all of them to participate in the movie , it’s almost unbelievable honestly , I never in a million years would have thought the likes of bill freehan , billy Martin , and Al kaline would star in a movie , but it was a different time of course . You couldn’t make anything like this now , nike and the sleeve advertisers would ask for licensing fees the size of the entire payroll for this production ..
