Very nice! How did you finish the stock? Is it birch? I’m working on a K31 walnut stock right now. All prepped but struggling to figure out the best way to refinish it. BTW your K31 videos are the best!
Thanks Woelfer. K31 stocks I know about. Hope you have seen my series on doing that exact job. It may give you some insight. Anyway, the M1 stock started with what was probably 60 years old military finish. Whatever that was. So I chemically stripped it. Started with 220 grit to just clean it up. Compared to the K31 stock the M1 stock is easy. Then to 400 grit and then just finished in Minwax Dark Walnut. The stock is dark walnut. The K31 stocks that are not walnut are beech wood. Great for the purpose. Not that great for refinishing. It gets dinged and the blond wood then gets marked. Anyway, 2 tips on the k31 stock. Use a sanding block, which is most of the stock, in order to keep the edges crisp. Never, ever, never, ever sand anything in front of the rear sight without the barreled action and barrel bands and hand guard all being put together. And some of the imperfections are now simply part of that particular rifles heritage. Don't try to sanitize it.
