Looking back at the Chargers in the late 2000s, it is truly shocking they didn't win at least one Super Bowl, first it was this year, next year they lose Philip Rivers only conference championship appearance, a couple years later, 13-3 and another first round exit, and in 2010, one if the greatest and most complete statistically teams in NFL history, and not even make the playoffs. It's actually really sad, and I'm not even a Chargers fan.

Patriots, Steelers, Colts, Patriots, Steelers, Colts, Steelers, Patriots, Ravens, Broncos, Patriots, Broncos, Patriots, Patriots, Patriots, Chiefs. Or in other words: Brady, Big Ben, Manning, Brady, Big Ben, Manning, Big Ben, Brady, Flacco, Manning, Brady, Manning, Brady, Brady, Brady, Mahomes. That's what Rivers had to deal with his entire career while he was on the Chargers. I was at Qualcomm for that game that year. When Marlon McCree fumbled after the INT, we all were in shock. The crowd went silent in my area, and actually a guy started to cry next to me (he was drunk of course lol.) True Charger fans knew what was going to happen at that point. We basically had the Pats beat, and the game shouldn't have been left to Kaeding who became a choke artist in the playoffs. To this day I'm not sure what Marlon was thinking, he should've fell to the ground. He didn't need to make an extra play. It was a great game and a great year. I just hated AJ Smith for getting rid of Marty for Norv the following year, yea he took us to the AFC Championship, but it was Marty who built that Super Bowl caliber team.

After Schottenheimer’s passing yesterday, thought I’d watch this game that I’m grateful was posted. Didn’t realize the how many mental mistakes the Chargers made that day. Two dropped sure fire INTs. A costly unsportsmanlike penalty which on a DB which gave the Pats a 1st down. The Rivers fumbles. And inability for the WR’s to catch crucial throws. Jackson’s lack of mindfulness to drag both feet in the endzone. And, of course, the infamous INT and fumble and Kaeding blowing his second consecutive playoff FG. Just wasn’t meant to be despite having a hell of a roster. For Rivers and Gates, there’ll be no SB, but both will join LT in the HOF and be immortalized. And hopefully Schottenheimer too!

Then SD fired Marty the following day, after going 14-2. The loss sucked, but that was one of the worst ownership decisions ever. Though they made it to the AFC game a year later, things might have been different had they kept Schottenheimer.
@KMC5240
@KMC5240 5 лет назад
He's so underrated as a head coach. My Redskins fucked him over as well. In 2001 which was Martys first year as Redskins head coach, they started 0-5 and were without question the worst team in the league. But he got the guys playing, and they finished strong at 8-8. A disappointing season overall sure, but they showed signs that they were trending in the right direction. Then Dan Snyder got involved when he shouldn't have, and wanted to split Martys role. He wanted him to be just the head coach, instead of having him continue on as both head coach and GM. Synder gave Marty both of those roles when he convinced him to join the Redskins.
@claudeabraham2347

SD fired Marty, but not until 13th February. Spanos, owner of Chargers, was furious at Marty for losing this game. He waited until after all teams with vacancies hired coaches, then fired Marty on 13th Feb, ensuring that no jobs are available, as all were filled by then. Spanos was a dirty, rotten, petty, & vindictive scumbag for doing that. What have the Chargers done since? Losing to Belichick & Brady is not reason to fire a coach. Many head coaches & assistants have lost jobs due to B & B beating them.

I agree that Marty was great coach but his poor decision making all by itself was enough to cause the Chargers to lose this game. He had them go for it on 4th and 11 on their own 30 yard line in the first quarter when they could have kicked a 48 yard field goal. Then he used a challenge flag in the 4th quarter after McCree was stripped by Troy Brown and it was clearly before he was tackled. A few minutes later they are out of time outs and in need of a field goal to tie the game so they spike the ball and kick a 54 yarder and miss, ending the game. Those two decisions if not made by him are more than likely a 6 point swing in the Chargers' favor, which would have resulted in them playing Indi the week after, a team that they consistently beat during this era. I love Marty but his decision making in that game is something that I will never forget.

It was a lot more than 1 mistake by San Diego. Rivers didn’t play that well all day, the muffed punt, letting Brady walk all over them in crunch time, the missed field goal was just the cherry on top. San Diego dominated the first 3 quarters and then fell apart in the 4th. On the flip side, it was against the Patriots, so it’s not like they haven’t done this to other teams before lol.

This is just another of example of the Patriots just waiting for the other team to fuck up for them to take advantage of. That’s what separates them from everyone else. Here’s what comes to mind: 2006- Chargers fumble after potential game winning interception 2014 - Seahawks inexplicably pass on the 1 yard line which is picked off 2016 - Falcons, with number one rushing attack, squander 28-3 3rd quarter lead. They were in position for game winning field goal and Ryan gets sacked to push them out along with turnovers on passing plays 2018 - Chiefs jump offside in AFC championship game on a play where they intercept Brady for game sealing interception Team after team fucks up aginst these guys in the playoffs except for the Broncos and Giants. They don’t make those mistakes.

@@vinceA3748 lol it was Marty’s fault? Strange🤔 so it wasn’t the punt returners fault for dropping a wide open catch on his own 20 yard line? Projekt 6 they had an inexperienced QB who was effectively in his first season. If the GM hadn’t drafted Eli Manning when it was clear that they already had a good QB then Drew Brees would have been the QB in this game and they would have had a guy with more experience executing in big games.
@MrTcavanaugh1
@MrTcavanaugh1 5 лет назад
Projekt 6 and further from that Marty has a proven track record for not being able to coach a team to win big games and it was the case in this game as well. Going for it on 4th and 11 on the 30 yard line in the 1st quarter with the game tied and then using a challenge flag when it was obvious that McCree had fumbled the ball cost the Chargers multiple chances to kick high % field goals in this game
@davewielhouwer11

I thought the same thing . Rivers wouldve been better off throwing it away and stopping the clock. With 8 seconds left they should have run 1 more play. A shot downfield or a quick sideline play. A 54 yarder has maybe a 2/5 chance. Bad clock management
