I would agree with you, there. Purgatory would be merciful. But wouldn’t the Protestant view of the “Grace alone through Faith alone in Christ alone” be more merciful? I ask, because in the Protestant view, there is the doctrine of imputed righteousness. That, along with the Protestant understanding of being “born again,” would be an even more merciful Gospel. And would make Christ’s sacrifice even more profound and beautiful. Not only that, but it would also save you from the punishment or “cleansing” of purgatory.

As much as I hate to say this, the 'mortal' as opposed to 'venial' sin dogma is why so many leave rhe Church. I have not went back to Confession or received Christ in the Eucharist because of this. I am tired of seeing people who were Catholic die without the Sacraments, and I have been in three car accidents. To say I am a tough case is an understatement. I wholeheartedly believe in all that you are doing for the Church and everyone else Brian. Some of us wrestle with despair and hope in ways I can only explain poetically. It's so difficult or even impossible to change and conquer our bad habits and habitual sins especially lust. But with the grace of God, nothing is impossible and conquering them all totally is 100% possible.
@marietav7342
@marietav7342 7 месяцев назад
I go to confession at least once a month. Of course, I pray many rosaries before going to confession to ask God to give me the graces of perfect self-knowledge, perfect contrition for all my sins and the grace to make a good confession. Usually I confess my deadly sins of pride, anger and lust even if I have not committed grave acts of pride, anger and lust because there's still some spirit of pride and sinful anger in my soul but I have noticed my spirits of pride and anger keep diminishing in me. Praise God!
@marietav7342
@marietav7342 7 месяцев назад
What about lust? I don't know if there's still some or a little spirit of lust that remains in my soul because I have not committed any act of lust anymore for more than 5 straight months until now even though I still have multiple temptations on lust every day but I still have not succumbed to those temptations on lust and I only pray 1 rosary sometimes or seldom to not fall into lust. I already told you that if you are totally or 100% purified from a certain deadly sin e.g. lust, anger etc, you will not commit that sin anymore no matter how strong the temptation is because you are already completely purified from that certain deadly sin.
@marietav7342
@marietav7342 7 месяцев назад
If you are completely or 100% purified from the 7 deadly sins namely pride, anger, lust, avarice, envy, gluttony and sloth, you cannot commit sin anymore even venial sin. Maybe you can still commit imperfections but not sins anymore even slightest venial sin. You are already perfect or almost perfect.
@marietav7342
@marietav7342 7 месяцев назад
E.g. if you are already 100% purified from lust, you cannot fall anymore into sins related to lust like adultery, watching porn, masturbation, lustful thoughts etc. If you still fall into one of those sins related to lust, it means theres still some spirit of lust in you or you are not yet 100% purified from lust.
@marietav7342
@marietav7342 7 месяцев назад
If your fall into lust keeps decreasing, it means the spirit of lust in you keeps diminishing also. Another reason why I still pray the rosary sometimes or seldom to ask God for the ff graces; to ask for Gods forgiveness for my spirit of lust not sin of lust, the grace of perfect contrition for my spirit of lust and the grace not to fall into lust and why I still confess in the confessional my spirit of lust even though I have not committed any act of lust is ..... because .... I feel I am not yet 100% purified from lust or rather my spirit of lust. I feel I am just greatly or maybe 95% purified from lust but not yet 100%. It means theres still 5% spirit of lust in me, not necessarily sin of lust. The chance of me falling into lust is already very slim. If I am already 95% free from spirit of lust, it means my grace of contrition for my spirit of lust is also 95%. This is why when I pray a rosary to conquer my lust or rather spirit of lust, I still ask for the grace of perfect contrition for my spirit of lust because I want to reach the level of 100% contrition for my spirit of lust. If I attained this state, it means I am already 100% purified from the spirit of lust and I will no longer commit act of lust even if I don't pray anymore to God to deliver me from temptation and even if the temptation on lust is the strongest.

@CatholicTruthOfficial
@CatholicTruthOfficial 7 дней назад
Maybe think about it on a more local level. I don't have OCD thinking that I might cheat on my wife, or that I might get drunk and beat her and then she'll divorce me. I don't do these things because I love her. Likewise I don't go out and commit grave and heinous sins against God intentionally because I love him. We are Christians who love Christ and if we love him then we're not going to want to go live Deeds of darkness. Yes, we fall here and their day-to-day, but they are not the big heinous things that break our relationship with him. And even if we did commit one of the big ones, with full knowledge and intentionality, we can be forgiven if we have true repentance. Does that make sense?

100% agree with this teaching and I believe Jesus taught this as well. God loves us, sin gets in the way. Mortal sin is called mortal sin for a reason. It jeopardizes our chance at immortality with Christ. Hence the gift of reconciliation and forgiveness. The bible says about mortal sin
@me-ds2il
@me-ds2il 4 месяца назад
Only the Lord saves but we play a role. We play an active role every day of our lives when we look to the Divine and live according to what we believe is right we move closer to heaven. If we shun good we move closer to hell. This salvation & freedom of choice are inseparable from each other. Salvation is NOT dependent on the doctrinal specifics of the religion you have followed on earth. As long as you have lived a life acknowledging God & refraining from evil bc it is against Him, you will be saved. Acknowledging God does NOT necessarily mean recognizing Him by name. A person can be ignorant of religion and still acknowledge God by living a life of good will. This is bc the choices we make on a daily basis determine wether we end up in Heaven or Hell. Yes worshipping God is essential for admittance into Heaven but we worship Him thru the actions of our lives "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever." ~ Psalm 23:6

The issue I have with this is that "mortal sin" as we know doesn't always equate to such levels of gravity. I am a fervent Catholic btw, but for example, look at how the last Sunday of Advent coincided with Christmas Eve. Therefore it was both a day of obligation AND a Sunday. I only found out about it the same day; and I had always (due to family tradition) planned to go Christmas Eve mass then dinner. But due to the double obligation I had to attend two masses in a row, basically the same mass. I had no issue with this, but let us suppose I did not do this; then went to one mass and thence to dinner and got in a car accident. Despite being a practicing Catholic, by that reasoning I would be sent to hell. Or the obligation to abstain from meat on a Friday could result in a mortal sin. Even in the example he gave with cheating on the wife; there may be other factors involved. I do believe in mortal and venial sin. However I also believe that mortal sin is nuanced as it relates to liability/degree. There is a perception by many that mortal sin are 'strict liability' offences eg the missing mass then car accident example. I just cannot see how not going to two identical masses in a row after being a devout Catholic all my life due to a technicality would cause me to be sent to hell. I cannot see how eating meat on a Friday can equate to murder, adultery, rape etc especially as scripture made it clear we are freed of rules about meats or ritual cleansing etc. Please help me guys.
@chidmania8485
@chidmania8485 7 месяцев назад
You don't have any obligation to attend Christmas vigil Mass. The 'dilemma' was one of your own making because you wanted to observe a family tradition - which the Church never said is obligatory ;-)
@chidmania8485
@chidmania8485 7 месяцев назад
1) As far as I remember (but I may be wrong), eating meat on Friday is not a mortal sin. But even if it is, that means nothing when compared to, say, adultery. It would be wrong in itself, not relative to another grave sin. Moreover, all the mortal sins you listed are not necessarily equal. Some are worse than others. I daresay murder is worse than adultery. 2) yes, there are nuances to the issue of mortal sin, and the video explains this: It must be a serious matter. You must know that it's wrong. You freely choose to do it i.e., you're not doing it against your will or forced by unavoidable circumstances beyond your control
@livingweaponnightmare
@livingweaponnightmare 7 месяцев назад
@chidmania8485 wasn't a dilemma...I attended 2 masses in a row that were basically the same and I was happy to do so. However, it seems absurd to me that such a thing, if I didn't do it, would result in me being sent to hell if I happened to die at some interval between them. Most people just thought Christmas Eve mass on Sunday sufficed for both and didn't know/understand that nuance. So how can they be sent to hell? I tend to look at a mortal sin as a wilful denial of God's grace in our lives such that the relationship is severed. So conversely I know that I ought to go to mass on Sunday but I wilfully and purposefully refuse to go because I do not want anything to do with Christ; then that is an affirmative action indicative of a heart which denies Christ.
@livingweaponnightmare
@livingweaponnightmare 7 месяцев назад
@chidmania8485 especially for the very scrupulous minded person like myself, this can be such a problematic topic and psychologically terrifying. Like the rule on abstinence on Fridays I never really knew or understood for most of my childhood in the faith. It isn't practiced in the national culture by most Catholics here. For years I took Communion under such circumstances. It shocks me to think that for years I could have been at liability for hell. Thank God for His mercy.
@chidmania8485
@chidmania8485 7 месяцев назад
@@livingweaponnightmare. There were 2 days of obligation in a row: Sunday and Christmas. You have a few options: 1) attend mass on the actual days, that is, Sunday and Christmas. 2) attend 2 masses on Sunday, one the Sunday Mass and the other the Christmas vigil (which has different readings, btw) 3) in some dioceses, you have the option of attending Sunday Mass on Saturday evenings, so you can do that while attending Christmas vigil on Sunday night 4) Finally, you can attend Sunday Mass on Saturday evening and Christmas Mass on Christmas Day. The point is that it's not mandatory for you to attend the two days' masses on the same day. That's only one option, and one u chose. Unless you're saying that it's just not fair to have to attend Mass for two consecutive days regardless? To that, all I can say is that it's just one more day, one that comes along just once in a year. What does it take away from us to give that to the Lord? As for the 'most' people you're referring to, that's the point of pointing out the conditions under which they may be guilty of mortal sin. If they're unaware, or forgot, or made a mistake, then they're not guilty of mortal sin and may not even be guilty of venial sin.

God is commanding you to attend Mass. If you know not going is dissobeying Him, know that it can lead you to leave the Church altogether and choose it to not attend anyway because, you feel lazy, you thought doing what God commands you is meaningless, you think sleeping through Sunday is more important, think vacations are more fun than going to Mass, etc., then yes, it is a mortal sin. All good Catholics know we have to go every Sunday. We are talking about normal everyday catholics who know full well that they need to go and then she was not too knowing. It would be a big offense against God and keeping holy the Sabbath day. Does that make sense? Also I would say committing a mortal scent doesn't send you to how Also I would say committing a mortal sin doesn't send you to hell. An _unrepentant_ mortal sin would.

I think this comes down to being held responsible. To miss Church (Mass) is something you CHOSE to do. Just like Lying, stealing, worshiping a false God and so on. I don't see how this is excessive. Not unless you think you don't have to worship God. I think that ranges around the first Commandment (Protestant break the Catholic first Commandment into 1st and 2nd). Confession at least once a year is an instruction. Although if you have mortal sin on your soul, wouldn't you like to get if off as soon as possible? I mean...why wait?

@@jomidiam And now you are wrong. You have done what I did and oversimplified. See a person who has not sinned doesn't need to repent and therefore can go to heaven...without repenting. So as long as this person is receiving the Body and Blood of our Lord he is saved from their venial sins. I think this is just one of many reasons why Protestants have a harder time getting into heaven. Catholicism isn't the _only_ way to heaven...its the _easiest_ way to heaven. Funny that Protestants think Catholicism requires too much of a person and we do too much. Like the topic of missing Mass being a mortal sin is too harsh.
