It was supposed to have been the Prime Minister's first big effort at reaching out to the opposition after the new government was sworn in. But, the meeting called to look at the implementation of 'one nation, one election' turned out to be a flop with several opposition parties choosing not to attend. The elections are over, but some would say the simmering discontent within the opposition lingers - others would say regional parties are trying to protect their turf , while still others would say big national parties like the BJP have all to gain at the expense of smaller opposition parties. As we start this episode of The Big Fight, here is a fact that not many may be aware of: The first general elections to the Lok Sabha and all State Legislative Assemblies were held together in 1951-52. That practice continued over three subsequent general elections held in the years - 1957, 1962 and 1967.

if the govt falls mid-way there should be by-elections for the remainder term.. that way all state and federal elections will be in sync all the time. Money and govt resources will be saved over a period of time.

There is a need for a comprehensive reforms in the representation of people's act. 1) Any scam exposed, complete the investigation and pronouncement of justice within 3 years. 2) Ban the convicted politician in any criminal or scam case permanently and completely from participating in elections. He/she should not be allowed to contest or campaign or associate with any political party of an independent candidate. 3) No elected representative (mp/mla/corporate etc) should be allowed to resign and contest elections for the remaining tenure of his earlier membership. No MP should resign and contest for MLA election or vice versa.

ridiculous idea, only reason I can see is to move 1 or 2 national party system. Later create monopoly with no accountability towards people. The donations of political parties via electoral bonds along with no limit in the election spending by political parties should be restricted first, which I know the national parties will not agree.

My thoughts on “One Nation One Election” With regard to “One Nation One Election”, there are far more pressing issues to be dealt with than having "One election . " 1. Stop politicians from standing for elections from two constituencies and bar people with pending criminal cases to contest elections. 2. Water conservation measures and stop pollution of all water bodies 3. Judicial Reforms for speedy disposal of cases and clearing all backlog (Impact cost over 4.7% of GDP as per Economic survey 2017). 4. Police reforms to be implemented in true spirit to enforce law and order. 5. Passing of the Women’s Reservation Bill 6. Withdraw high value currency(above Rs.500) in phased manner (to curb black money 7. Improve standard of education & Health care in Govt sector 8. Take steps to prevent suicide of farmers , Farm sector reforms , to halt migration to cities. 9. Bring two child policy to prevent Population explosion and related problems like food, employment, congestion of cities. 10. Urgent steps for Afforestation across country. Benefits of all the above steps will ensure bigger cost savings to country’s finances and also bring real change for the common man, rather than election , which benefits mainly political parties.

Your points are really great except the first one. I would like to add that for all these a government needs to work day and night and that is what isn't possible because there are continuous elections and a lot of time, attention and resources are invested in that. So this election reform should be brought about as soon as possible so that the government is free to attend to the important issues that you very rightly mentioned.

The subject issue is more relevant and essential to deal taking confidence to the principle of constitution and the system DEMOCRACY But On the basis of Party, Expenditure, Leader, Religions. The expenditures incurred by the PM alone from 5years is enough to conduct ine State election. Where is the principle of Cooprative Federalism as enshrined in constitution. It is absolutely Foolish proposal raised for reduction of expenditure. The central aim of damaging the principle of constitution and democracy is inherently existed. propsal is to eradicate both and rule by RAJA of RSS.

If a person is good for the local work but some other party is good at the national level, it will affect that persons' chances to get elected in a bad way. This is what happens when we choose mla or mp. We don't just choose them based on their qualifications but also based on who is going to be the cm or pm. If they want to reform, they should reform into having a separate election for governor at state level and president at national level.

Just reduce the time period for conducting Election. For Assembly Election complete Election process should be completed within fifteen days and complete General Election process should be completed within one month. Then there is no need of conducting one nation one Election. General election should not be conducted in more than four phases with one state in one go.

I think the best electoral reform is to limit the number of times one can hold public office. Like 2 terms at max at all levels. This will increase the number of normal people who can run for MP, MLAs, Ministers etc. Politician shouldn't be your profession, governance should be a duty. Add this with the one nation one election reform. Also staggered voting, vote for 272 MPs every 2.5 years. Give a 5 year term so that at least half the MPs are always working. Club state elections to two.

I think ONE Nation One Election plan is not a best plan.... Eg: People of Kerala voted against communist gov in Loka Sabha election , due to Sabarimala issue.... We all should support one nation one poll. This will save lot of money which can be used for nation building. Some people saying it’s good to have many election coz people spend money each and every time election happen and black money coming to people hand for spending .. but that’s not the way we should think. Support this movement so that it will be good for nation. Or just stop election like China :-)

The last stupid stay in the NDTV as anchor. The channel must get rid of him as early as possible. He always has dirty agendas. He also always interrupted Raghav whenever he started speaking. This channel doesn't deserve a scoundrel like him. Let him go to Republic and match his character with Goswami. If he comes again as an anchor, I will stop watching NDTV 24×7.

You are biased channel . I find the participants seems to have run into a big wall and they can not penetrate and have laid down their weapons without fighting. Remember it is an idea and we should pursue it . remember Orissa and Andhra Pradesh had their election held with the federal smoothly. There can be another alternatives. We have federal elections in one year then have all states election 3 years later. Then we have elections every 5 years.
