Thanks for this video. I recently ordered a Sigma 28-70mm and needed an ND filter to go with it. I'm glad to see this filters color casting is well controlled and no bad patterns to be seen.

Hi Enri, This was by far the most detailed video I’ve watched under this category. I have a question, a bit out of this video: I’m having a hard time choosing between K & F concept ND 2-400 and K&F concept ND 8-2000 filters. If it was you, what would you have picked?? Sorry am a bit new into filters and none of the review clarified on this comparison. Thanks )

Hi, thanks for watching it ! So, the reviews on both options are very good, so I believe either would be a good pick! Personally I'd probably prefer the ND 2-400 for two reasons. First is that the higher range on the 8-2000, when it's darker, begins to show the X problem that some ND filters have, it's a normal situation, so that upper range is not that useful anyways. And very often I find myself in the situation of having the ND filter on, and then going indoors for a while, and back out. In that going indoors moment, I usually spin the filter all the way to the minimum, so I don't need to take it off. When you start with 3 stops of light reduction already, like the 8-2000, you'll probably won't manage to do this. Or you'll have to up the ISO a lot to compensate. Tell me if it was clear :D

I’ll add pay a bit more for brass step-up rings because the cheap aluminum ones can bind up and not release the filter.

Which filter would you recommend as an all-rounder? ND 2-32 or 4-64. I mostly shoot/film outside and in different light situations.

Hi !! I found myself using the 2-32 all the time without issues and always keeping the 1/50 shutter, no problems! I've actually found myself more on the edge on the bottom part, in which sometimes I had to remove the ND. So probably i'd recommend this one!

The solid yellow cast is the most significant disadvantage of this filter.

It's noticeable but if you don't mix it too much in a sequence with other footage from same place you can't notice that much. Still very very solid filter!

Most ND filters will have some color cast, even some cameras with built in NDs. That's why it's important to either white balance or shoot on a 10 bit or better codec to tweak it in post like he stated in the video. It's really not that big of a deal and easy to fix

You can confirm on the lens itself but i believe it's a 67mm thread size isn't it ? You can get one of these in the right size for it !

Stacking step-up rings prevent the use of the hood, so it's a no go

That is true! But between the hood and the ND, if i have to choose i'd prefer having the ND to have the super open aperture, i think it affects more the image than the hood!

@FlyEnri I hear you; I often shoot backlight, so hood really helps, so I had to get a ND for each lens size I have (which is actually not much, 82/77/52, nothing fancy; the only big hit to my pockets was buying the Sigma 105 f1.4 which needs 105mm filters...massive and expensive filters!). Another thing to keep in mind is that some lenses has extending barrel when focussing (example, I have a backup RF 50 f1.8 to my Sigma 40 Art), and the filter is attached (and so moves) to the extending barrel and so the AF motors need to move also the weight of the filter. So a small 43mm filter on the RF 50 f1.8 is light enough (actually there I use the step up ring to the 52mm filter, which still fits within the hood) for the motor not to fatigue, but a 82mm/77mm with step up ring it's too heavy for that barrel and that motor, and you may risk to ruin the AF motor. So yes, sometimes step up rings are fine, but you also have to evaluate which lens you're gonna use them on 🙂

Depends on the lens, not the camera, you gotta check the thread size of your lens and buy the right sized one :D

Hi Mike! Some ND filter brands call them by the exponential, like 2-4-8-16-32 meaning 1-2-3-4-5 stops because it's actually 1/2 the light, then 1/4, 1/8, blabla You're right, 32 means 5 stops :)
