The story of one of my big mistakes as a dealer. Missed out on some very nice profits on 2009 Topps Steph Curry Rookie cards. Also discuss the lesson I learned from this and how I use that lesson in my overall strategy today.

I can only assume you have a good buy average in on bitcoin. I called them "Shitcoins" from 2009 to 2015 and then seen in 2016 it did magnificent in retracement mode stating upside was coming so I'm happy the last time I bought bitcoin for fiat currency was $900 Bitcoin in 2017. Don't need to anymore as it's been a fun ride for me last year 4 years plus years. But it's up 35% or so from January so I can only assume you got in by them. I like other coins like Theta better :)

I wish I would have had that piece of wisdom around 2000 before the dot-com bubble exploded. Having had sold chunks of the rising stocks (rather than hoping for them to continue to rise to the moon and beyond) certainly would have been a decent strategy back then. A very valuable (and true) contribution, Chris.

You are indirectly hitting on a few eco / finance concepts. The same applies when buying (dollar cost averaging). You also might be interested to learn about behavioral finance. It looks at some of the irrational behaviour people tend to have. For example holding on to losers too long and selling winners too fast. In a way what you are proposing is a way to slow yourself down to reduce these impacts.

After an insightful video like that I think I have to subscribe. When it became pretty clear that Lebron was going to win it all last year and make history with Finals MVP on a 3rd team, I employed a similar strategy. Instead of buying 1 or 2 cards for around $1,000 total, I decided to buy Around 500 cards in the $1-$5 range. Buying singles on COMC and lots on Ebay I was able to score some really nice deals. Many cards that were only a dollar or two raw are selling for around $50-$100 in BGS 9.5 . They take forever to come back at the Economy\Standard levels, but at only $10 to grade a card it's almost impossible to lose.

It is very similar to selling covered call options against stocks for income. If I own 4,000 shares of XYZ, I will sell options against 2,000 shares. Sort of like owning an apartment building and renting out units without the hassle of being a landlord. I have a bullpen of 12 stocks I do this with depending on market conditions. But I never sell options against my entire position.

My biggest blunder considering the 2020 boom.... About 5 years ago I purchased two lots of 97-98 Flair Showcase. They were the Row 3 graded BGS 9.5. The one lot had 14 Jordans and the other lot had 11 Kobes. I paid about $140 for each lot. I went and paired them up, one Jordan and one Kobe and sold them for $50 on eBay after I received them. I made a few hunndred buck on it. They were selling for around $250-300 a piece this last year at that grade. $250 x 25 is $6,250. (sad face)

One think you kind of skipped is having your money tied up when you hold. In the scenario you laid out there is not as much effects as you sell some and hold some. Holding a card for a year for a 10x move nets you less than if you buy/sell, 2x deals 4 times over that same year.

Wow....those prices were astonishing? Curious do you speculate and invest current players or players you see doing well in the Minors. I would love to bounce ideas off each other. It's tough now because cards start out so high. Those RPA and auto/refractor numbered start in the thousands. But there are base card refractor that are reasonable on lesser know players. I picked 3 and only ended up buying one. I picked Jarred Kelenic and bought his Bowman Chrome Refractor. I also picked Joe Adell and Keston Hiura but I passed on buying both, that turned out to be a good decision. The brought Adell up on 2 different years (2020-2021) just to be sent down each year. Hiura started very well but by the end of this year he fell off to nothing and got demoted. I have took this approach when players are good to great I buy there Topps or Topps Update or Topps Chrome Update. I have picked up Acuna, Ohtani, Albies, Soto, Betts, Vlad Jr. and Harper. I already had Trout. Your thoughts?

I bought a raw one from a local store a year ago for $150. Just got it graded with BGS and it came back an 8.5 with sub grades of 9.0, 9.0, 8.5 and 8.5. I feel like it's actually gone down some since when I sent it to get graded. Was roughly $1500 in an 8.5 when I sent it, and now around $1K-$1100. So trying to figure out if I should just sell or hold. It seems cards in general from the 80's, 90's and 2000's that were skyrocketing have now experienced a minor price correction. Like the 89 Michael Jordan base in a 10 that was selling for about $3K-$4K at one point as I recall is now worth roughly $1500. So yeah, tough decision. Either way I'm in the profit, but seems like his career is still going to finish super strong and become a hall of famer some day.

But with the influx of cash in the hobby, one has to reconsider modern trends that never happened that much in the past. I can speak from personal experience about the 2009-10 Topps Basketball cards. They were so ugly, even knowing they were the last year was no draw whatsoever. The only reason I have the Harden, Curry, and Griffin cards is because I pulled them from the handful of packs I bought. Regrettably at the time. Topps had lost their collegiate licensing that year, along with a lot of other companies. That’s why these rookies are in those terrible blank shirts.

Very much like the stock market. I overpaid for Messi and Ronaldo cards due to my own ignorance, but they're still goats and those cards will not soon lose value. So, I went in and found those same cards at lesser costs and bought more, basically dollar cost averaging down into them as an investment. I plan to keep doing this for now until I believe I have reached a good cost basis for all of them and then hold for another decade or so. My hope is that I can sell the worst of the cards at much more than the ones I overpaid for eventually. Plus, it's amazing to me that anyone has ever paid only a thousand for a PSA 10 Curry rookie looking at the auctions today, lol!! Totally crazy how card prices have ballooned in recent years.

this is like investments and stock options. when you put an option out, you only risk part of your position. Like out of 500 shares, you only risk maybe 200 shares, that way, if the stock rises and you lose the 200 shares, you still have the 300 remaining for the future.

If you have multiples of a collectible, you should never list them as it gives buyers leverage when they see you have more than one. I went all in on a collectible and removed all of what I thought was the under priced inventory in the marketplace by buying it up. I didn't buy real low but am going to sell much higher as I know how many of this item was printed. I'm trying to corner a market like that ballsy investor did with the Mike Trout refractors. This isn't a baseball card item and relies less on that person's current star power or activity.

I've got the 09 Topps Chrome Curry refractor in a PSA8.5. I need to crack out and do a light surface clean for a resub. If it hits PSA9 we're talking $25K+ now. But I wouldn't feel bad man. None of us can predict the future. To give an example. Very recently I traded away my 86 Fleer PSA9 Jordan sticker @ $4K trade value. That is where comps had been FOREVER. Then literally one week after I mail it, this next wave of Jordan hysteria hits and now one just sold for $8200. LMAO I wouldn't have minded taking a loss on it long term. That comes with the territory. But ONE WEEK after I dropped it? Ouch.

I have two things.. 1) I wish I had bought the BGS 9.5 Kobe Precious Metal around 5yrs ago for $325. The seller took too long to respond to me and I spent it on other cards. 2) In the late 90’s when I was 17 or so, so let’s say ‘98-‘99 ish, I have a Dec B-Day, I was at a card show in my town and seen a Fleer Jordan RC at a vintage table. I asked how much it was and he said $900 but that I should just move away because I couldn’t afford anything he had.. little did he know, I had over 4K in my bank account because I worked but never spent my money. I was so tempted to buy it for my PC but he’d be the winner in at argument at my expense of showing off. Looking back, I should of pulled the trigger, ignored his attitude against a teen and bought it.

Ah yeah, bummer on both of those, although probably a lot of people have similar PMG and Jordan RC stories.. Nothing worse than a jerk dealer killing a deal

I'm betting it all in Doncic Contenders Optic Class Act RCs. Silver, Blue Cracked Ice and Red Cracked Ice. If anyone has any let me know or simply put them up for sale. I'll buy 'em all! :)

I can relate to this so much. I eneded up getting the Chiefs in a case break of 2017 Prizm for $10. Ended up with 8 base Mahomes RCs, an Orange /275 and an auto /99. Ended up selling all before he even played a game for around $400. Wishing I would have sat on a some a little longer.

I highly recommend for people that buy blaster and mega boxes in large quantities yearly, to open the wrappers cleanly and save them with the empty boxes. I'm starting to see a demand for empty stuff due to repacking ventures.

I have a mistake to share. I had a 2000 Bowman Chrome Tom Brady RC graded BGS 9.5...I sold it for about $250 years ago when Brady won his 2nd super bowl there abouts...my heart breaks every time I think of the card.

Ah that hurts, but yeah the longer your in the hobby, these sort of mistakes are unavoidable.

I just bought a curry topps rc to grade for $600. Looks like a 9. Very happy to have the card and grade it I’m just worried that I bought at the peak 😭 but maybe I’m thinking too much... either I’m happy to own the card

I did the opposite. Dale Murphy is my favorite player to collect and I bought his Topps RC for $73 when he was hot in the hobby. His card is worth $10 - $15 today.

Greets my man! This video ... I could do one on so many stocks I've sold premium against ... like NVDA @ $150 ... did a Covered Call on my shares ... made $212 total ... yeah, its $524 now ugh!! oh well, WE MOVE ON! ... question, Im a Warriors fan and James Wiseman is the real deal ... so many ungraded rookies because PSA is lagging so much ... here's my question ... how do you determine a TRUE rookie card in this era of players having many many cards? I want to buy some ungraded Wiseman cards but not sure what is his true RC that will be the ones to have like the Greek Freaks rookie ... thanks again!
@collectorinvestordealer
@collectorinvestordealer 3 года назад
Yeah I imagine you end up with a lot of these type scenarios in stocks. I use COMC as my go-to for figuring out if a card is an official "RC". There is no uniform rule for Rookie card (technically there is but collectors/dealers/experts dont always agree). You dont need an account with COMC, just go to comc.com, use the search. On the left you can filter by a bunch of different categories, one being "Rookie Card". At the moment, he doesnt have any official "Rookie Cards" yet according to COMC.

Personally, thats exactly what I would do. You can play it in any number of ways. Definitely hold on to at least some in case he continues to blow up, but might be nice to sell one and lock in some profits.
