Why use third party applications, when you can just develop a solution. In a previous position I was unable to install any software outside of a small list of approved software. With that said, I was able to develop PowerShell scripts.
The problem was that sometimes our servers would go offline. This was out of our control. Once offline, our services would hinder the customers ability to access there files. I wanted to monitor this while sitting at the desk so I can make a call if necessary. This solved my problem. I was able to get a quick snapshot of what servers are offline and I can easily update the list if any new servers are added or removed.
