Today Luke is reviewing the Savotta Minijääkäri Backpack, straight from Finland!

Link : www.varustelek...
Price : $108.99
Weight : 1.70lbs
Colors : Black and Green
…..
Despite the name this is actually a proper sized 20 litre day pack, simple in construction and appearance. A roll-top closure means there are no zippers to fail and rain doesn't fall into your stuff. All straps, buckles, stitches and so on are tough as nails, so you can really push yourself through anything and the pack will be your trusty companion.
The main compartment is simple with just one zippered pocket on the inside of the flap for valuables, and a kangaroo pouch for a hydration bladder or 13.3" laptop. The pack has elastic passages for the hose (or headphone cord) on both sides at the top. Anything else you want to pack separately goes easily on the outside thanks to the PALS webbing: even the carrying straps have PALS for pouches you want to keep really easily accessible, or just for a sternum strap.
When you're not carrying a full load the flap folds down to a compact size, and side compression straps reduce the bulk further. The volume is there when you need it, but barely noticeable on your back when you don't.
The flap has a 13 x 5 cm velcro base for a name patch or morale stuff.

Today Savotta operates two factories, one in Karstula, Finland, where they make all their tents and metal components and one in Estonia where they do about 50% of their sewing.

It drives me nuts how some (maybe many) mail order companies make money on their high shipping rates, while Varesticula or whatever sends things across half the earth for $10, beautifully packed. I probably spelled it wrong, but I like them.

Larry Kramer I bought the PLCE Bowman Radio Patrol Pack OGR previewed a few weeks ago, but perhaps a later version. My purchase was from Varusteleka and took place 6 days ago. It is currently in transit. The price with shipping is outstanding! I look forward to receiving the pack.

True. Many places charge a lot for items under a certain price making what seems like a deal into a no deal.
@highonimmi
@highonimmi 6 лет назад
they can claim shipping costs as a business expense. companies get bulk shipping rates. it may take longer for the customer to get it but, the shipping is less costly.

It is "varusteleka". Va-rus-te-le-ka. 1st part: Varuste = equipment. 2nd part: Leka = sledge-hammer.

I've got this pack for about 5 years and I love it! At first I was disappointed at a few points but with a few minor changes it's become my favourite pack! The "problems" are just two: 1) The zippers on both of my Savotta Jakaari S packs suck. No matter what I did those zippers were getting stuck. In the end I don't use those and removed the zipper pulls. I wanted a zipper-free pack in the first place after all. 2) Only one compression strap per side sucks, I ended up removing them. Don't miss them at all. Other stuff: 3) Got a chest strap (it's from Sarma, I got the packs and extras from Varusteleka, great guys!), it works great. BTW I also got the Sarma shoulder padding but I don't care about it - I prefer the pack without those. 4) Got 2 molle military canteen pouches, 2 Wisport 9 litre molle side pockets and a few compression straps to attach to all that molle. This gives tons of different variations! 5) I use a piece of a sleeping pad in the water pouch compartmen for back padding. Or a tarp in a drybag. Or a hoodie. Again, tons of options. AND THE PACK IS PERFECT! When fitted with the 2 side pockets, sleeping bag attached to the bottom, rolled sleeping pad attached to the lid and a small hatchet attached to the molle on the front - there is still so much space left. I can live for days and days from that pack!!! For summer I add just one or two of the canteen pouches. Or I remove all of the add-ons and just enjoy a small pack with a blanket underneath. YEEHAW!!! And this review was one of those that made me order it those 5 years ago. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!! PS: I wish there was a full molle panel on the bottom, not just the four loops. The full panel would be stronger. Ripping one of the loops would basically mean losing the ability to attach stuff using the added compression straps. But with how strong the pack is I'm not afraid of that. And there are the pack's compression straps that could be used.
@davef5916
@davef5916 Год назад
Also love my Jaakari S. Whats your go-to method of attaching a sleeping bag to the bottom? I get worried about it getting poked by a stick pushing through scrub, or getting wet or both.
@michalurbanful
@michalurbanful Год назад
@@davef5916 Nothing fancy - I just use two straps with buckles that can tighten the sleeping bag to the pack. I'm not worried about the sleeping bag though.

I've had one of these for two years now, and it's like when I met my wife : I knew the quest / try / ditch cycle was over. It's like reaching the nirvana of small packs. I use for everything, pretty much every day, from carrying a chainsaw and accessories across the hills, to carrying a laptop when, sometimes, I go for a day of work in the city. It works, very, very well. Just because of this excellent experience, I keep being tempted by one of the large Savottas, to replace my hiking pack, even though I have no need to...

I wanted to revisit this video now that I've used the Savotta Jakaari S and the Sarma sleeping pad with wings for a year now. This pack never ceases to amaze me with its versatility and comfort. Whether I pack 15 pounds or 25 pounds it's comfortable, water resistant and durable as it takes abuse on every outing. I use it mainly for stealth camping crawling through tight spaces, underbrush and up and down rocks and the abrasive rocks don't seem to affect the pack. I made a modification, however, adding a sternum strap to stabilize the pack with the over 20 pounds loadouts. Otherwise the straps just hang down and secured by the daisy chain loops.
@Lord_Papaya

Hi Alexander, Do you consider that it is a good backpack for bushcraft and that with a load of 8 kg it is comfortable to use without lumbar belt for 2 or 3 days several Kilometers?

Follow up on my order. What an amazing pack! The first perception was the quality of the items, especially the Savotta Jaakari S backpack. What I had packed into my ACU Molle II assault pack I was able to pack it all into the Savotta and had room to spare. The Finnish mat with wings was strapped to the bottom but I think I will place it on top. The loadout is just shy of 22 lbs and I could not believe how comfortable the pack is to carry, However, I was wearing a smooth material hoodie and the shoulder straps felt like they were sliding off my shoulders. I fashioned a sternum strap from a camo compression strap and that worked really well. The engineer who designed this pack knows the human form.

I think I finally found the right new pack it seems perfect for what I need it for between this and a small mystery ranch pack already have the 2 day assault pack and love the quality on that this pack looks to have that same high end quality also without the high end gimmicks that are unneeded and just catch on things

If you got impressed by the product design of Minijääkäri, heres a quote from Varusteleka on Rajajääkäri on their website: "...ja samalla ehkä Savotan tuotesuunnittelun onnistunein tuotos tällä vuosituhannella. Näin ihan rehellisesti sanottuna." which loosly translates to "...and in the same time is the most successful product design Savotta has made on this millennium. Just being honest." I would love to see your opinion on it. Awesome reviews btw!

I love mine. It’s simple, just the right size. Anything larger.....well, I just wouldn’t use it as much. It’s that simple. The Savotta (small), I don’t believe the call it the “mini” any longer. But, this pack is my “go to” pack....it forces me to think carefully, to only take what I need, and nothing more. Buy one, you’ll love it. -Stephen, Ohio 🇺🇸

Great review Luke.The pack looks tough and rugged. Even if you add up the shipping cost, its still a lot cheaper compared to similar type packs from the "usual suspects" (i.e. Maxpedition, Vanquest, etc.). Makes you wonder why Savotta can come up with a high quality and low price product and the others can't.

Thanks for the review! I purchased one a few weeks back prior to watching your review and I couldn't agree more - bar none this is the best pack I have ever owned! Like you I was worried about the straps; however, your review was spot on they just seem to just fit into a magic spot on my shoulders and feel just right. In fact, when I add a chest strap I believe it takes away form this packs comfort. I use it as my weekend camp/hike bag and have no problem fitting everything i need inside or on it. My only additional suggestion would be to add water bottle pouches on at least one side and a general purpose pouch to the front, works great for me. Also, I keep a canvas bedroll with wool blanket under it.

I just ordered the Savotta Jakaari S or MiniJakaari along with a "kip" or sleeping mat, a pad stiffener and a pair of lashing straps from Varusteleka.com. Why it took me so long ...dunno. Savotta gear is so amazing and well worth the prices. It's the best $215, including shipping, I will ever spend on any gear. You and Shawn Kelly of "Corporals Corner" convinced me to pull the trigger. Thank you for this amazing review!

@defeqel6537
@defeqel6537 3 года назад
If you are still struggling (after 3 years :)), J is pronounced the same as Y in "yank", and "Ä" is pronounced the same as the A in "yank" (or "bad"), just double it up for ÄÄ. I is pronounced the same as I in "still". Finnish is phonetically consistent (there is a bit of a special case for double consonants and "ng", but those don't matter much), so it all carries over.

The pack is very nice, but not for me. I require a pack to have padded shoulder straps, a kidney belt, either a stiffener or frame, whether internal or external, and a vented back. This would make a fantastic get home pack for the car if it had all of the aforementioned features.
