One of my last ever rides on my horse! Having not ridden my pregnant horse for 2 months I needed to check her out for a demo I will be riding her at in a weeks time “14th October in Blackpool” . Hormonal changes can sometimes make for a surprisingly different ride prior to being in Foal 😆. I’ve no idea what to expect so here goes . ( note we had the all clear to ride Nita after a vet check ) steve-young-ho...

What a wonderful testament to your horsemanship skills Anita is. How excited must you be to see how the foal turns out and what a birthday present. Mum and Dad are both glorious. Never knew that about pregnant mares - I’ve learnt something. I was never livelier when pregnant, just moody!

my Arabian mare was amazing when bought and only green broke..she was 3 yrs old...I was 8 yrs old...next year she was at a school festival giving rides....in time a top speed horse(I trained her) as well as trail horse.....went any where all day on long days... she was worked with EVERY day .,,some type of hands on or training for riding..she was borrowed by a sheriff deputy to work crowds and search...plus he hunted from her too..,,my mare I said good bye when she was 29 yrs old ...injury ..got out of pasture...kids pushed fence down....that injury made me have to say goodbye...til I am with her again

We are in Cordoba Spain and watched the Royal Andalusian Equestrian Show last night, a rider and Andalusian team demonstrating the pole riding techniques really demonstrated how riding from the seat for tempo, direction, flexion is accomplished with minimum effort. And your demostration really dovetails and matches these riding techniques. Bravo. 😊

I've never heard Steve talk about why he is banging on her sides while she walks. I know he's gentle, but why constantly and why spurs? Seems needless.

Nita is a Testament to your horsemanship. She looked really happy. Sometimes at demos she has that look in her eye that says, I’ll do it but I’m putting up with it a bit. But, in this, her eyes were saying I’m loving this. She’s missed you, Steve. My fingers are crossed (along with my eyes - too many cocktails) that all goes well for her pregnancy. The stallion daddy is beautiful. Give Nita a cuddle from all your supporters. She really deserves it. And so do you.

She is a great mare and you are a great rider. But I am concerned about riding her when she is pregnant, considering her age. And transporting her. I bred horses for many years and I think you are pushing your luck. She raised her tail and contracted her flanks at one point as if she had received a twinge. I am probably over anxious because she is an old lady.

I can see you planned well ahead to get a replacement (or two) before she retired … and they’ll both do fine as well. Hope you both enjoy your vacation next week (or this week 😊)! Brought a tear to my eye, memories of my first horse when I was a kid. She was the best-ever, fearless in traffic, unbothered by noise, and I could ride her with no tack at all (not something I'd ever recommend, and did only in her pasture). I had no training but she was patient and smarter about it all than I was.

What a lovely responsive horse she is! I have a question about your feet in the stirrups. I trust you have a reason...why have feet all the way in up to your heels? I think a lot of us are taught that heels down and stirrups under ball of foot for safety reasons. I'd like to understand your riding better.

When I was a kid, our mare foaled on my birthday. It was during the day and we had a bbq with some friends that day, so we were able to watch her give birth in the paddock in front of the house. Of course, the foal became mine!!! If you want to get her in foal again, what is it....8 days after birth for the foaling heat....? I can't quite remember. That being the case, will you foal her at home, then transport them to the stallion, use AI, or foal her where the stallion resides? Such decisions.

I’m not surprised horses run faster when pregnant. The research shows the fetus can sense any weakness in the mother and somehow send stem cells out to repair any damage in the body so the mother can incubate better. Our hair, skin and nails begin to look incredible and we glow with good health. Babies tend to heal the mother, make them stronger in order to best care for them. I’m sure there is much science has yet to discover about the intimate chemical communication, interchange between babies and their mothers.
