In this video I review the Wise Adamascus AD8, a 200m diver made of 904L stainless steel. Housing a 9000 series Miyota movement too, Wise have made a beautiful and classy looking premium dive watch.

WHY I OFTEN DON'T MENTION OTHER BRANDS IN MY VIDEOS.
You may have noticed that I often don't mention the original brands that watches I am reviewing pay homage to. This is very intentional and not meant to offend you or the original brands. I lost my first channel in October 2020 which I had spent 9 months growing and invested a significant amount of money in simply because I had mentioned the original brands in some of my videos. There are people who try to use RU-vids lack of understanding when it comes to the difference between homage watches and fake watches to attack other channels and their owners and sadly I fell foul of this in 2020. This channel was also attacked recently and RU-vid deleted content simply because I had said 'subby homage' and 'Rolex homage' in two videos despite the watches in the videos being perfectly legal homage watches. Please understand that I can not afford to risk my channel so I will no longer be mentioning other brands when reviewing homage watches.

For dress watches and non dive watches you might be right Gary but as an engineer working in stainless steel chemical processing systems design and being a quite experienced diver (retired German navy) who actually uses watches as backups, 904L is less suitable than 316L stainless. It is softer than 316L, more prone to scuffing and scratching, and though stronger in tensile strength, that property is utterly useless for a watch case. Also due to the higher nickel content, people who are susceptible to nickel allergy can have a problem in wet and humid conditions with 904L. 904L is just a marketing gag used by Rolex initially if I'm not mistaken. Don't be blinded by marketing. 😉

Yep, totally agree. A couple of days ago I was commenting on a video, and talking to another user, who - like me - was already a bit fed up with ubiquitous NH35A movements in microbrand watches. He adviced me to take a closer look on Wise watches, which are also often cased in 904L steel ( I know the brand, but somehow I missed that detail). And... that's a good advice. The 904L steel is basically the very same thing as Rolex's "oystersteel". Rolex may actually "guard" the whole production process more strictly, but it's still the same material. From what I gather, the main advantage of 904L steel over commonly used 316L is, that "oystersteel" is much more resilient to corrosion caused by salt water. You may think, that's less relevant, when you don't use diver's watches and don't swim with them, but we have to remember, that human's sweat contains salt too... Which means, that the better material adds to watch longevity. Wise watches cased in 904L are around 500 - 600 USD. Not many other brands use that type of steel. And if you compare Wise and Rolex pricing (and you like Wise designs, of course), than for me it's a no-brainer. I'm not saying I'm buying one right away, but Adamascus series is already on my "definitely-to-buy" list. In the case of this specific watch, I really like the hour hand design (got a bit bored with "batons" and "mercedes" all over the place). The dial and bezel look nice, but I have this impression, I've seen this type of design many times before. Brands that come to my mind from the top of my head now when I see it, are Seiko or Omega. That is not to say it's "unoriginal" or "boring". It's a nice watch, it's just I feel like I've seen this before... I'm a real fan of applied indices, so for me the watch looks just right, given that I see misaligned applied indices all too often - but these look really well done. As per usual with Wise watches - I just wait for them to finally switch from plain text on dial to their stylized "W" logo, but it's a personal preference thing.

904 definitely has a better luster. Finally got a Rolex so can confirm. What impresses me is how bright it shines after a quick rinse. However it’s a bit of a scratch magnet compared to my other steel watches. I think if you have the funds for a Rolex or any watches using 904l, just enjoy it for a long time, don’t worry about the scratches and every 10 years get a full service and polish and it’ll look brand new.
@thegorn

Many sites have put 904L as either the same or lower than 316L on the hardness scale. Rolexes are so high-polish that I think whether they used either 316L or 904L, they'd start to scratch up fairly quickly.

There appears to me more than soupcon of marketing bs around the 904 vs 316 choice. The touted better corrosion resistance is only true if your'e in the habit of bathing your watch in a bath of concentrated sulphuric acid! 316 is also extremely corrosion resistant and is the standard in many laboratory and medical applications. The different colour and polish comes from the higher chromium and copper content in 904. Incidentally, 904 is a softer material and would scratch more easily than 316.

I'm a bit torn about this watch. On the one hand I love the dial and how the dial plays on it and the overall design, the handset etc. On the other hand it's the case finishing I'm not excited about. Sure, they want to show off their case finishing by polishing that 904L steel and out of the box it looks fantastic. But as 904L is even softer than 316L and the case is fully polished, that splendor is not going to last. When being worn regularly this this is going covered in scratches. Besides I think a mostly brushed case would go better with a tool watch like this.
@jaysterling26
@jaysterling26 9 месяцев назад
I just did some research ( er...rabbit hole..?) on 904 after reading Rolex article on Fratello . You're correct about the polishing. My conclusion on why Rolex ( & not even Tudor) use it is because it is a shinier material and then the manufacturer has to set -up a whole different production line to deal with it ( apprently 904 isn't more expensive steel than 316 but I could be wrong about my whole conclusion & I guess everyone inc. yourself knows this already..) than 316 so more investment & shiny object = more aesthetic and cost or a Veblen good in the case of Rolex(?).

So many micro brands trying to get in on the action. While this watch looks ok I guess I need to be convinced what's so different about it other than 904L steel that would make me buy it rather than a similar Seiko. Ok, you may say I answered my own question by mentioning the 904L steel. Well, my answer to that is 316SS is beyond adequate for us "desk divers" who will never have scuba tanks strapped to our torsos. Plus, there are so many watchmakers that can easily fix a Seiko and getting parts is a breeze. I'm not against more watch brands, on the contrary, I just want to see some real innovation other than just all of these homage pieces.

Exactly. And, given that - for the use case of most watches - scratches are a bigger problem than corrosion, I don't see why the average person would choose a steel more prone to scratching and harder to work with (meaning a higher price) than 316 - even if it is more corrosion resistant.
@jaykwonzzz
@jaykwonzzz 9 месяцев назад
@@hudldevice1092 Plus the corrosion resistance difference is nearly imperceptible. 904L is a marketing ploy so that Rolex can differentiate itself from the field by offering something unique. You want something incredible? Sinn's tegimented titanium is what you're looking for in a real tool watch.

The amount of materials science used in modern manufacturing (of anything) is seriously lacking. Apple uses titanium to make a phone and people flock to it despite titanium being significantly softer than stainless, and far less rigid as a result. Rolex uses 904L making everyone think there's any advantage outside of appearance post-polish (which isn't significant), which is incorrect. The level of corrosion resistance exhibited by 904L isn't significant enough to make a difference and 316L is SIGNIFICANTLY harder, which makes it far less likely to scratch or deform. I'm thankful I operated in the knife-collecting space prior to moving to watches.

While I like the looks of this steel 904L (a lot) overall I think Im drawn more to the Rze watch you reviewed a few days ago. I really don’t know…tuff decision if i was in the market for a watch again! 😂 I’m going to look into those FKN straps. For some reason Ive started to develop a rash when I wear my rubber Turtle strap.

Rolex have been using 904L since at least 1987 where it was introduced on the short lived 168000 Submariner model. Unsure what dates it was used on other models.

The also means that the watch scratches much easier.... I might depend on how much you scratch your watch up? If you're someone who's always buffing out your watch maybe it's better.... If it's that important to you, hardness coating trumps all of it

I disagree. The SS brands like ZELOS and others use is just fine. I own the WISE Damascus. I can't put my finger on it, but the Damascus case almost looks fake compared to others I own from other brands. I'm not saying that is, but it's just too shiny and doesn't look right. I was thinking in ordering the new pre-order GMT with the Miyota 9075, but I'm hesitant. I tried a few times to contact them about a crown issue only three days after I received my order .. crickets.

904L has more than double the nickel content of 316L and that can actually leech into your skin and cause irritations. Nickel reactions are not uncommon. Granted if someone has a nickel reaction, they'd be better off with titanium, or a DLC coated piece, but it is worse with 904L. It's no harder to work with than 316L (Rolex are full of BS), and the metal price difference is fairly insignificant. In hardness they are much the same, although you can temper 316L to get a much higher rating. 904L has greater corrosion resistance, but any corrosion that will damage 316L will destroy your hand well before if affects your watch. 316L is used extensively in marine applications, which should tell you a lot. Rolex started using 904L in 1985 purely because its the most bright and shiny, due to the higher chromium and nickel content. That's basically it. You know it's not about the salt-water pitting resistance when they use it in Sky Dwellers and Datejusts. It's all about the bling, and a marketing gimmick. For this watch it's also about the bling.... you ain't going diving with a leather strap. Divers on leather... smh.

Making a watch out of 904l stainless steel is like making a watch out of chocolate. I rarely use my Rolies for fear of dents and scratches. The lazer welders are making a fortune repairing Rolex. Completely daft. 904l is such a soft material.

How does this NOT offer a bracelet? That watch needs a bracelet in my opinion. Certainly would add cost but one worth it to me. What a shame...
@bidipbo
@bidipbo 9 месяцев назад
I disagree with the premise in the video title. I have had the 116660 and now the 126660, but I have also owned the 16610. No one needs extra corrosion resistant SS for their watch's case and bracelet, principally because the days of using a Rolex as a tool watch have become history and the stuff of legend. Most collectors also have a penchant for keeping their watches in good-excellent condition and own multiple watches and have designated some of those pieces as 'beaters'. It does not matter the price point of the watches in the collection. Most of my 31 watches now are 'cheap', but that doesn't mean I love them any less, or treat them as beaters. In fact, every time I set out to buy a beater, my selection process is stymied by my love for the design or materials and the objective is thwarted because I cannot bring myself to abuse any watch that I own. No, those of us that collect watches generally lightly use a majority of the pieces and rotate them sufficient to preserve their condition. But here's the thing, 904L scratches more easily - and those scratches are more visible BECAUSE of the lighter colour of the steel alloy. My 116660 looked as if it had been sand blasted by the time I sold it. I had worn that watch day and night and having lived in a beach community, it really was sand blasted. But here's the thing: I hadn't put that watch through any professional rigours and it still looked like shit when I sold it. I just took receipt of a Karajan SNR025 and the high polished edges and bezel have blown me away. Having just held it side by side with my 126660 to compare lustre, the difference is negligible when the comparison is about the high polished surfaces. The satin finishing does reveal a lighter tone with 904L. No, 316L is superior. If more companies put more elbow grease and TLC into the finishing of the case and bracelet, we wouldn't be seriously entertaining a softer steel that is more corrosion-resistant, because none of us are dealing with the elements or chemicals that are corrosive to SS. And, I expect that if there are those folks out there, they are removing their watch first.

I know 904L stainless has a higher nickle content, does anyone know how this will affect people with a nickle allergy?
@thegorn
@thegorn 9 месяцев назад
It has more than double the nickel of 316L and I have read over the years how people can't wear Rolex because of it. If you live in humid environments especially.

@@thegorn Another reason to not add a Rolex to the collection. My original wedding ring was sterling silver, and the recipe mine used had nickel in it. About 5 years later, I started getting an itchy trash under the ring, and eventually some blisters. Take the ring off for a week, and it healed up. Put it back on, back it comes. I learned the prolonged contact with nickel will give you a nickel allergy, and I have it now, so if I can ever afford a Rolex, it's going to have to be something I only wear once in a while, I guess.

904 is not harder to work with than 316l - it's easier. 904 is softer than 316l so it scratches more easily, but it's also easier to buff out. Superior corrosion resistance of 904 is useless in real life because your 316l watch will never get corroded anyway. So it all comes down to marketing and minor cosmetic differences. There is literally nothing inherently more premium about 904 compared to 316l - both are industrial grade steels. Like another commentator here pointed out - luster is precious metals territory, and if you want scratch resistance, go to Sinn or Damasko or other brands that use hardened steel.
