Compromised elbow position is one of the "big three" when it comes to riding technique. The majority of riders drop their elbows into a position that provides limited stability and fosters a hips back scenario. Finding comfort with an elbow position that allows you solid range of motion is crucial. This video will simplify this process and give you a few key things to think about.

Every now and then, Rich drops a teaching bomb, and this was one of them. I've long known that I had a tendency to move my weight back in turns, but I've struggled with the various techniques I've heard about to correct this. Most recently, I've been using "Fluidride"'s approach, which is to focus on getting your knee forward over the toe. This works, but I've found it hard to keep in your mind when you're also thinking about the many other factors you've got to get right. But this morning, I was out on my local trails having a breather, when I saw this video had landed. After watching it, the rest of my ride was transformed. I found it really easy to visualise getting your forearm lined up as a continuation of your fork, and to keep that in the front of your mind whilst still doing everything else - dropping heels, leaning bike, rotating hips etc. On the last steep twisty descent I was able to stay in the front seat and rail the turns as well as I ever have. I think the key to teaching the hard-of-thinking, like myself, is not explaining the techniques themselves, but finding simple ways for people to visualise them, so that they have a fighting chance of performing multiple complex movements simultaneously. Some of The Rides Series videos are masterclasses in this.

These are the comments that provide me immense joy! Simon is a legend and has some incredible rider input. I also love his delivery style, the guy is just so damn cool. Over the years, I've found the elbow cue seems to help people stay focused on fewer elements and let things happen as they should. My goal is to help people find THEIR best position and then free up bandwidth to enjoy the ride more or start to focus on refining certain elements of their technique.

I remember reading about the 'attack position' in Motocross Action Magazine back in the 80's, and when I dropped out of the moto scene and picked up mountain biking, I was quite surprised to find out that the elbows-out still applied. It's fundamental! yeah

Nice explanation. The best way I explain things to noobs is that your arms, hips and legs are the true suspension in mtb. The fork and shock are just to assist. That is why it is important to constantly make small adjustments in body position to keep your limbs as much in alignment w the suspension of the bike as possible. Riding a rigid bike really makes a new rider intuitively move the body to the correct positions from my experience. Getting too far back when encountering a feature is the error I see most often. It is natural to avoid scary things and the body instinctually moves away from danger. Reps and confidence is the only way to rewire the brain. The pump track is a great trainer too.

Now this makes total sense to me now. So little bit of back story. My bike got stolen back in January and i was bike less for 9 months. Recently i bought a new bike and got back to riding again and noticed something wrong with my riding. After watching this video it all makes sense now. I used to ride elbows out and i think this is the missing piece of the puzzle. Thanks for reminding me😂

My son heard me say "peace out" to some people and he adopted it. He started saying it to everything around him. One day, he was playing with his dump trucks while we had friends over for a BBQ. We left to get some ice cream and he turned around, looked at it dump trucks, and said "Peace out...dumpers." We all thought it was funny and I said it in the closing of the next video we shot because it wasn't going very well. We shot another take and I figured the editor would use that one. He used the "Peace out dumpers" take and the rest is history.
