A dedicated bike blanket like the moving blankets you had are great to put the bike upside down on. Grass also works well and is free.

The air pressure in your suspension (same for tires) is very dependent on ambient air temperatures. I normally run more air in the cold winter times, as air is denser when it gets colder (the more dense the air, the more psi you need) - therefore one needs more PSI to maintain the same sag as when one rides in the warmer seasons.....there is no year round PSI setting. Always adjust per the season.

Depends completely on what kind of bar you have when it comes to flipping it upside down. Mine rests on the grips and edge of the seat since the oneUp bar has a rise to it. Both of those are replaceable high wear items so resting the bike on them really doesn't matter at all and makes accessing parts of the bike easy when you don't have a lift

yeah. WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND would SLIDE the bike upside down on the ground to the point that it'd slash the seat? tbh that was the dumbest part of the video imo, together with the leaning part. like yeah leaning with the tire is safer, but will also get the walls scratched pretty freaking quick.

Trying to keep your bike in pristine condition is futile because, given the nature of mountain biking, if you ride your bike anywhere off road, it's going to get banged up, guaranteed. There's no avoiding it, and, frankly, there's no reason to. It's just part of the hobby. Also, I flip my bike upside down all the time to work on it, and I've never damaged the saddle, so there's that.

I actually don’t lean bikes drive side out as often anymore. If it’s drive side out and some knocks it over, then it’s falling onto the drivetrain

My favorite thing to do is to never check my thru axels which eventually come loose. Then my wheel gets a little wobbly and I start popping spokes.

Look over your tires after each ride. You may find all kinds of sharp objects embedded, thorns, thistle, goat heads… Same with weeds caught in the drivetrain.

Two things come to mind on turning the bike upside down. First is advice I've seen for those who don't ride very regularly. Turn the bike upside down overnight before a ride. This brings the oil in the fork shocks in contact with the seals and makes sure they are lubricated and working well the next day. I don't know if this is worth doing or not. Second thing is that leaving it upside down too long can allow air to pass the diaphragm on top of the brake reservoirs and result in bubbles in the fluid, reducing braking effect. It sounds a bit of a long shot, but possible.

Scratching any bike is SO annoying when it’s scratched for a stupid reason, I can accept scratches easier when i’ve scratched my bike on the trails.

One guy finished his ride, was gassed out and leaned his bike against his truck while he's catching his breath stiil had his gear on. Another guy shows up and parks next to him (mind you, there was plenty of other spaces to park that were open) then the bike falls against the guys car who just showed up and he screams you've got to be F-ing kidding me! Well of course the winded rider found enough air to yell "Well who told you to park right the eff next to me!" Just saying common sense and courtesy goes a long way to avoiding damage, conflict etc.

Rethreading from the back of a crank, that’s an old engineering trick. My dad taught me that when I was an apprentice. Just been through my hardtail with a fine tooth comb too, my derailleur hanger was loose… good job I checked…

The Swat tool in the headset of my Specialized is a bit of a problem. There’s no star-nut, so you have to tighten the bearing bolt from the bottom of the steerer and it wants to loosen up sometimes.

What about over-tightening or over-torqueing bolts whilst making sure everything is tight and rattle-free? It's agood way to ruin your bike parts fast!

About frame protection, this satin matte finish paint job that a lot of bikes have is nice but it wears down to a glossy texture at the base of the top tube from my knees. There’s no protection down that far.

Flipping your bike is the only way to make some diagnostix (drivetrains for example), without having repair stand, why not to do it in your storage with a clear floor and some soft mat

Hi guys, great advice. Just found a really good chain lubricant, DuPont Chain-Saver Wax-based Lubricant it repels grit and grime. It has 88 five star reviews. Don't know if you can get it where you are.

I find that every time I've inverted my bike for maintenance I have to bleed my hydraulic breaks again afterwards. I now have a chain hanging from the ceiling in my garage with a large metal ring on the end of it. I can then just hook the front of the seat in the ring to hold the rear wheel off the ground for servicing the drive train. The chain hangs on a hook at the top so I can shorten it as required.

Not sure if this is specific to Reverb dropper posts, but I've heard that you shouldn't hang (and probably pick them up) by the saddle when the post is down as this could cause air to get into the system and make it not work properly.

true, it was the first thing i was told by my bike mechanic in local shop. never lift your bike by the seat anymore. he saw just too many people bringing back their bikes with wrecked droppers and was tired of it.

How to stop pedals cross threading cranks by doing what I've been doing since I were a lad. Hold pedal with one hand, introduce the pedal thread to the crank hole and with your other hand, use your thumb and forefinger to turn the pedal axle until it starts going in. Only then, get your tool out, after the screwing's been started. Even easier if the pedal has spanner flats, more room for fingers. This has the benefit of doing it with your fingers having next to no torque. So you can't strip a thread when tightening a bolt with your fingers. If there're no spanner flats, or you can't get your sausage fingers anywhere near the threads and your using an allen key on the outside of the pedal, insert the long end and turn it lightly with your fingers, until the pedal starts going in. I don't think I've ever introduced one thread to another with full tool cranking force in my life. Always start them off with my fingers or with the long end of the allen key/ 'screwdriver technique', every time. Some people call it mechanical sympathy. That's how you not strip a bolt. Don't just fire in with high torque bolt turning, right from the start.

i never wash the bike itself because i am fully aware of higher pressured water damaging seals, however the only parts that i do clean are fork/shock/dropper stanchions, and chain. literally nothing else needs cleaning. never had rust and had 1 bike nearly 25 years old now with no rust anywhere. also, i would like an opinion on roof racks, as driving with the bike on a roof rack in the rain would be equal to doing a jet wash at motorway speeds wouldn't it?, also, what about the stones being kicked up by the cars in front? surely there's a possibility of a stone destroying your forks or denting your head tube. I've always put my bike in the back of a car for fear of this happening, but there is a problem for me now as bikes are getting bigger and bigger and i can no longer fit them in the car.

About shifting under load: back in before 2000 I already had "hyperglide" or however it was called to have supported shifting "points" or better said to better "glide" from one gear to another. Has it now been introduced as a new, pricey feature? 😂

Leaning could have been expanded on - for example, why do people insist on laying a bike down on the derailleur side? Around here we have a low concrete seawall, and it is astounding how many people leave very expensive bikes leaning with their fork stanchions against the top concrete edge.

I'd heard that storing a bike inverted for longer periods of time can also cause problems with the brake fluid getting air into it, settling incorrectly outside the master cylinders, etc.

its not so much air getting into it, its more air already in it getting into parts of the brake system that its difficult to get it out of. Think about it, you pump the fluid in from the calliper, so if the bike is stored upright then the air bubble will be at the lever, so you can just inject a tiny amount of oil and the bubble is gone. however air will be a lot harder to remove if its right at the bottom of the system in the calliper. its common sense, i dont know why people dont have brains nowadays.

My local bike shop recommended that I DON'T hang my new bike vertically in the garage, especially over winter, as it can mess with the hydraulic bits.

Setting your bike upside down on the lawn to clean it - only to have the moisture drain into the downtube cable, etc. holes and then collect at the base of the Dropper Post Mech to $$$$$ rust it out to failure. (Don't ask me how I know!!!)

I'm super confused by Anna's comments around 8:40 where she says not to spec an XC drivetrain on a Trail or Enduro bike...but is that even a thing? Thinking about Shimano's lineup, starting from the most high end to the low end, it goes XTR, XT (which is what I have on both my hardtail XC race bike and my full sus trail bike), SLX, and Deore. Was drive train just an example? I get that you wouldn't want to put 2 pot calipers with 160mm rotors on an enduro bike, nor put a 100mm fork on one, but I didn't think Shimano or SRAM had variations for use (other than maybe the SAINT crank/pedal components). I always thought an XT derailleur was an XT derailleur whether it was on a Canyon Sender or a Canyon Lux

SRAM’s latest Eagle Transmission has the XX and the XX SL (presumably for Super Light) at the highest end. You’d probably not want to spec the SL version on an Enduro in the interest of robustness. But yeah most other drivetrains that come to mind don’t really have an “XC” and “Trail/Enduro” variation.

Underbiking can shorten the life of your bike, but help form you into a better rider. I guess I don't ride hard enough. I run a Specialized Control casing XC tire in the US coastal Mid-Atlantic region. 3300ish miles with no problems. I'm in the top 25% of Strava segments on single-track and 73 kilos. There's this other small race (Cape Epic 2023) where Specialized claims they had no tire/wheel failures. Aren't you supposed to ride the terrain according to your skill AND equipment level?

I have made a mistake when cleaning a dusty bike with a damp rag. I have a matte colour and now it has plenty tiny scratch marks... sooo not the best idea.

Run a fender! It can save your frame and even stanchions from rock chips, not to mention keep dog poo of your face..

Question to Niels, what's your seat and head angle? I am currently eyeing a bike with 66° head angle with cheap Rockshox Gold fork but, don't know how to make it slacker. I love the bike's frame.

There is 2 brand that sell special head cap set to slacken the fork head angle. I looked this up 2 years ago on Amazon. Its like $40. By 1,2 or 3 degrees.

Some good stuff, but honestly, upside down argument is just made up. There is actually benefits in keeping the bikes upside down for *short* periods, as the lube in forks etc. can go up as well.

After about 3 years the last Keurig stopped working ru-vid.comUgkxBrV-RbF5Nk0Rlt9i15aao-YMzqzTG8Vf initially was able to unblock, however eventually we couldn't fix. That one was a replacement unit sent by the manufacturer after we had problems with our very first Keurig. This works fine (lol, at least for now) however I didn't realize the water reservoir was so much smaller than our prior unit. With 2 people having one or two cups of coffee each morning, it seems like I'm refilling it daily. Otherwise just happy to have the convenience of pod coffee vs. making a morning pot.

What about going mullet on a non-mullet and vice versa, does that ruin your bike? Not transporting your bike properly, can ruin your bike. Lending your bike can be ruined, depending on the rider.

@@horusgarcia1it’s hard to say with certainty, because different manufacturers have different specs to their frames. A certain brand/model might hold up very well to being mulleted (even though unintended for such) while another brand might develop cracks or even snap at the head tube. The best is to always do your research by seeing what other riders of the brand/model have gotten away with. Second best is doing your own experiments…

@@horusgarcia1the biggest downside in making a mullet a non-mullet (27.5/27.5) is the bike now rides lower than intended - the components most at risk are your pedals, cranks, chainring and BB.

I put my bike on grass or carpet when its upside down to prevent damage. Id have suggested that rather than say dont do it.

Same, was putting a new tyre on the other week and did exactly that, flip it on the lawn when the grass could do with a cut so as to not damage anything..... That reminds me, I broke the lawnmower shortly after that....needs fixing 😂

Another video idea: 10 tips on how to ruin the environnent with your hobby. 1. use toxic chemicals like silicon sprays and PTFE lube so they can pollute the trail. 2. ebikes are way better because they require a bunch of metals and mining and industrial operations. 3. travel by plane as much as you can to ride in sunny and exotic locations, our own trails are sh*t . 4. change your bike every year, its going to be outdated otherwise. 5. you know the rest .... ;-)

Contrary to hipster-yuppy myth; a bike is still somewhat rideable with with a speck of dust or a small paint scratch. But just to be safe though, make sure you never take your MTB off the pavement under any circumstances. They just weren't designed for that kind of abuse! 🙄

That is the way to go to play it safe and get the most reliability out of your drivetrain, but some of the newer groupsets coming out now are better designed to support shifting under load without causing excess wear and tear on components. Changes to tooth profiles, shifting ramps and the design of the chain links all help make it possible!

Please dont use any cleaners on your lawn or anywhere unless it is bio degradable. Same as car wash videos when they wash their car on the lawn or driveway. It is not ok anywhere.
