The convo on the turn: I don’t think the caller understood that you were not only factoring in the 60% equity you had on the flop, but also the ev of winning the hand outright with a fold when the villain does this crap with hands like high pockets. He made a comment about having past exp with equity ratios similar to this hand and how he didn’t do well, and that seems to have made him gun shy. The biggest issue is that many people don’t take the two secs to calculate the percentage they need to win to break even.

I like the way Hero played the hand. I think the smaller 3bet is better. It puts the other guy's stack at risk without having to put his whole stack at risk necessarily. It allows the villain the opportunity to make the mistake of just calling the raise then checking back the turn allowing hero to realize his equity for cheaper. Also a non all-in 3bet there actually looks stronger than a jam and might be more likely to get a fold. I think this is a good creative play by hero.

Ripping it all in is actually the lower variance play. If he continues, he’s almost always going to put you all in anyway. So the only way you’re reducing the variance is by increasing the chance that he folds, which is done by jamming.

I am always jamming here as well. But it does bring an interesting thought experiment about fold equity. The idea that betting more = more fold equity stands true in most spots obviously. But here specifically if you 4 bet a bit bigger to say $1350 it can almost look stronger, you are clearly committing yourself and also them since they understand the rest is going in no matter what, plus the potential added fold equity of it looking like a please call me bet. Might actually generate more folds from overpairs that way. Meta/leveling game for sure. Def was not the callers logic but could actually be optimal when playing humans vs computers

Exactly. I think a lot of people over value not having to show their cards. If opponent jams instead then opponent shows first, so if op doesn't hit he won't have to show his cards.

This was definitely my first thought, and my second, and my third. Devils advocate: I was thinking about this, and if you were someone like a Hellmuth, making it 1100 just might be a long term chip saving strategy. Think about it, if the op calls 1100, he will then be likely wanting to get to showdown, as he must think there is a great chance he is beaten. If hero doesn't improve, he can save several hundred dollars. This is assuming of course that the op recognises 1100 is effectively an all in. I think the op folded thinking it was effectively an all in, and the bet might even look stronger (a bluff or semi-bluff is always jamming). If you think about it, it seems as though the raise is an attempt to keep the op in the hand - which is scarier. This flop lends itself to a lot of draws. It doesn't sound as though the hero was thinking this way, but in effect there might be some (only some) merit to it. I would jam myself, but I might consider a bet that looks like a disguised jam against a thinking player in certain spots.

Jamming and getting the opponent to fold a hand like JJ-AA is a huge win. The raise to 1100 worked but for the wrong reasons. It likely looked incredibly strong to the opponent as a nutted hand rather than a draw.

It's a 15 out draw - the odds say it will come in more often than it doesn't...plus his ace is likely live so it's often an 18 out draw.

@@edide1627 lookup the concept of stack-to-pot ratio. Stack size will (always) be a factor in decision making -- this is why angling is a big deal and reviled. However, it is possible to induce a fold with large, but not all in, bet right? That would be "something similar".

To the hero: if you happen to read this comment, listen to this entire segment again. Listen to it several times, and try really hard to forget your preconceived notions while doing so. Having a 60-40 edge over any overpair that isn't AA isn't a _"small"_ edge. It's the kind of equity edge that, combined with your fold equity, makes a jam _mandatory_ in this spot. Do whatever work you need to do away from the table to clarify your thought process until you don't mess this up again. That is all.

You want him to fold or you want to see both cards. You've got to pull the trigger then and stick your stack in. If you're seeing ghosts of missed outs in the past, fold your hand, cash out, and go home.

Part of the problem is that he is sitting WAY too deep. 300BB to the straddle and 600BB to the normal 1/3 stakes. If he has $600 here. It's not even a sweat. You jam over the MP1 bet on the flop and just let the cards fall where they may.

@@andrewadami3920 Nope. If you cannot handle such swings, you shouldn't be playing to begin with. If you had only 600$ here and you jam, there is no fold equity. The fold equity goes higher as the stack sizes go higher.

It's because the results aren't temporally connected in time to whether an action was good or not. Makes learning very difficult unless you realize you have to play for the long run I don't think most people even think in terms of statistics and expectation

The caller doesn't understand he doesn't have to hit his hand to make money. We are not playing against one hand, but all the badly played hands SB may have. Yes, we are 10% behind breaking even vs a set, but large equity favorite against all else, plus we over realize that equity when he folds the KK once in a while, or lost his mind with KQs. We are in a spot where WE hold all the nuts, nut draws, and sets. If you can't put it all in on this spot against a SB 3b you are playing scared money and should not be that deep.

I’d somewhat discount sets as well. Do 77/88/99 always 3 bet preflop? Maybe they should vs a CO open. But I don’t know if they always do. And if they do 3-bet, how often do they check such a wet flop? I met check 99 on 952 rainbow, but not on 987 two tone.

Well, that’s not my experience in this size of a game with a limper calling the $120 bet. You can theorize all day, but this is now reality and it’s not likely SB re-raiser and limper are weak in this situation.

@@MrJamberee SB re-raiser was representing a big pair or AK kind of hand preflop. Based on board texture, he has a one-pair hand that he is supposed to be playing a small pot with. The other guy played preflop like he is clueless. This hits his range more than SB, but he could have a lot of holdings here. Definitely nothing to be afraid of on average.

@@michaelserrate3032 Almost a year ya. Cherish your favorite vloggers, the time put in to make them outweighs the reward for most of them I would say. I would spend essentially a full day (8-12 hours) per video and earn around 20 bucks or something. My channel wasn't growing fast enough and I wasn't getting any endorsement offers or anything like that. The work outweighed the reward for me.

I think an underlying issue was that Sam had "built up" his Stack (probably starting at $500 and running it up to $1,700). He seemed reluctant to "risk it all" because of the psychology of not wanting to "lose" his "winnings".

Against QQ he's like 60/40. Against any two aces he's still a favorite, like 55% to 45%. The check flop the raise is typical of a scared over pair turned to desperation. But., he's a dog to any set. Which could check raise the flop. I still jam. Scared money don't win money.

I am new to poker, so forgive me if this is obvious or incorrect, but a recent strategy I have come to employ is to try to get the money in when I have the most equity. In other words, in this specific situation, unless I hit one of my draws, the equity of my draws is only going to decrease on the Turn. So I should get it all in now when I have the most equity. Does that make sense?

I should have been clearer, I am assuming the other conditions are right, as you describe, and that raising puts Villain's likely range/holding in a tough spot, denying Villain equity, etc. I agree that Villain almost definitely has the best hand here. (I do hand reading exercises every day. On every flop I go through a quick calculation of how many sets, two pair, top pair and draws Villain's likely range can have on the given texture before I take an action.) But still Hero likely has the most equity his holding is going to have at this juncture. So, I think, getting the money in now on the flop makes the most sense, if that is the play, rather than waiting for a Turn card which will likely shift the equities more in Villain's favor. . Perhaps my "thinking is all wrong." But I am doing okay overall. Still playing on my original five dollar deposit and almost tripled my bankroll in about 100,000 hands. But thank you for your advice, your consideration, and your civility in taking the time to correct a perceived misunderstanding on my part. I truly appreciate your help.

If villain has an overpair, as is likely, your hand is _better._ Although you would prefer a fold from an overpair, I would not call jamming a bluff. Make him paaaaay!

While I would always jam here (which is the right play) I do actually think the min click can look even stronger and potentially generate more folds from overpairs which is a huge win. More of a psyc game at that point, you’ve clearly committed yourself so from the villains perspective you should have the same fold equity with the added look of a please call me bet

Sure, but you’re tempting them to call more often with the smaller bet. And if they call and you hit on the turn you’re almost never getting called for the rest. Jamming maximizes fold equity & also maximizes profit when villain calls and you get there.

Yea callers logic was flawed. But it is an interesting wrinkle to think about. I may go a bit bigger (say $1350) to make sure they aren’t able to flat and fold on bad turns. All that said I’m most likely just jamming.

@John Megahan The term itself-derived from the post oak, a smallish tree of little commercial value-often carries derogatory connotations and it is frequently seen as a weak play, as the player takes the overcautious approach by not betting too much. Thus, this strategy often undermines the chances of the bluff working. Doyle Brunson described the move as "gutless" and he claims that he never makes the play. Doesn't sound like a good play.

Hero said something interesting preflop "I didn't 4 bet because I didn't want to get blown off my hand". WHY is that a concern? Do you think 5 bets are common? It's amazing how many times people fear getting raised as if villain can see your hand. Every consecutive raise gets exponentially more rare. If someone 5 bets you you are HAPPY to get "blown off" your hand because you're facing AAs or KKs at that point. And truth be told villain smooth calling those hands might actually empty your pockets more than the 4 bet would have so be grateful. Most of the time you will get folds or calls don't worry about outliers (unless you're against a maniac).

So the guy says he raised to $1100 but then if the guy rejammed he would have called anyways because his odds would be so good. Wow. Someone needs to explain that jamming not only increases fold equity over raising to $1100, but if you’re going to call a raise regardless, then just jam. Your odds are 60%, and he said multiple times that he’s been in a similar situation and lost, but that just shows he doesn’t understand odds. Having 60% doesn’t mean you’ll win every time, it means you’ll win 60% of the time. So by making this jam consistently you will have a positive ev. And what Bart was trying to explain that you just don’t look at the 60% but also the ev of him folding outright on the flop. Take a second to calculate the odds needed to break even after your jam, then think “if I hit I my flush I beat all his value hands, and if I hit my straight I’m still ahead of a lot of value”..: easy jam. Leaving money behind shows he wasn’t confident in the hand and is massively exploitable for anyone paying attention… and lastly, even though he said he would have called if the guy came over the top and jammed his $1100 raise, let’s be honest, he would have been scared of the draw missing and folded

Sam if you ever read this I'm going to help you. You are clearly a smart guy and you are calculating everything correctly except your fold equity, By your comments I would guess you have a tight reasonable image. If you backjam here like Bart suggested you will get more folds than the average guy and this will be a highly profitable spot for you. (The fold equity is worth more than your free turn card you are trying to buy)

If villain has KK sometimes on the flop, then isnt it much better to just call his raise, with position? We dont want him to fold KK, we want him to bet again on the turn to get him all in. Shoving the flop only serves to fold out a lot of the stuff we really want to keep in. I think shoving flop only makes sense if we dont have position for the turn bet.

The caller forgets that winning is still winning even if you don't play out the hand. Always win when you can unless you're 1,000% sure you can walk the dog. You can get burned more often if you slow play everything.

The red queens was targetting the MP who made a weak ass bet on the flop. And the red queens guy did not think Sam had anything big here, because of how pussified he is by just calling 120 on the flop at the cutoff. Not as terrible as it might seem after seeing the hands.

Wonder what the guy with queens does if "hero" rips like he's supposed to. Is there ever such a thing as raise/fold here for the QQ hand? Don't think so, but I'm asking because I'm not sure. If he folds to the odd click back not all in, does he still fold to a jam? QQ made mistakes, and so did hero IMHO. QQ should just be 100% call, never raise, correct?

Bart you describe what the hero's action should be here perfectly bc a set never folds here to a min raise. So, realize your equity bc you'll be all in anyway on the turn if board pairs. I think in some scenarios the 1100 bet looks stronger than the all in jam, so for that reason I don’t hate it.

I don't think hero understand how important it is to shove on the flop. You have MAX fold equity as well as more than 50% chance of winning the pot. If you let one card peel it could change everything. First of all more money is likely to have gone in, making a shove MUCH less impressive (he's too committed now) and if the turn card didn't help you are no longer at 50 % but could be down to 30 some percent. And if the turn card DID help then it's likely to scare him off. It really does change everything. Getting people to fold is the goal in poker not making hands.

This is a good example of being result orientated...just because you've been in this position before and the draw didn't come in doesn't mean that jamming isn't the right play. He said he wasn't afraid of losing the money, if that was actually true he would have jammed to deny equity and realise his own...

If opponents JAM than I may think that the reason for jamming is the opponent is on Draw. Putting 1100 can make me think that opponent already has a straight or set and is betting 1100 which I may see it as value bat and fold if I have over pair. But if someone jams than I am sure that the opponents wants me to fold as he is on Draw. If you want opponent to fold the bet of 1100 is better than jaming.

This was brutal to listen to. If you're worried about putting it all-in here because "I've seen too many times the draw not come in" then just quit poker. Seriously, no sarcasm, no insult. The game isn't meant for people who can't understand that you can lose 100 coin flips in a row and it doesn't change the fact that the odds are still what they are, and if you're unwilling to utilize fold equity when you have it you should find a different game to play. It's even more ridiculous when he starts off the call talking about how he is playing at this casino because they let you buy-in for 200bbs at the 1/3 and then proceeds to play scared with his stack size. This is just a simple, straightforward hand for everyone EXCEPT someone who is very inexperienced or just doesn't have the bankroll for the game he's in/is worried about losing the money he has on the table.

I dont mind the play solely because it look RIDICULOUSLY strong. Looks like its never a bluff. This might be the best way to maximize fold equity and not make It look like a draw.

He smooth calls raise and a brick hits turn you are now not the favorite anymore in a giant pot. Flip side he smooth calls raise and you hit flush or straight and he is able to get away from his hand. Rip it in and put max pressure and get max value.

The 2 villains have either AK, AQ suited, AA, KK, QQ, JJ, or TT which you block to this is a jam because he meant think your bluffing and call you . You have over 61% Equity over Everything but AA . They can’t call a 4 bet that large at micro stacks with 77, 88, or 99 and there is nothing else it could be .

He didn’t shove after the check raise because he was worried about losing his stack.... it’s a money issue. If he had the right bankroll, he would confidently go all in. Just my guess because I can’t see any other reason why he wouldn’t shove there.

The key point is, that hero loses all the EV gained from folds, if he only calls or backraises the flop too small. Ofc he wants his villain to fold overpairs to get free 1k, which surely happens a lot If he jams there. If he gets called hes flipping. The flop jam is literally the most must thing in this hand. There is no alternative. Happily for hero, the villain probs assumed that the Hero is supernutted there, as most of the recs use small raises in such boards, when they are supernutted. So ye, 1,1k isn't ultimately bad sizing choice, because it could actually gain more folds than 1.7k jam. Even it doesn't make any sense mathematically.

Hero is ahead of all overpairs. It’s nearly a flip vs AA but against red queens hero is 62%.

@@nicks210684 Yes. That doesn't change the fact that he wants hero to fold the range of overpairs. Hero has roughly 58% against all overpairs. Leftover to play + ev 1655+1655=3310 3310 x 0.58 = 1919.8 1919.8 - 1655 = 264.8 usd.

@@FinnishFinest I’d say either result is fine. If villain folds QQ/KK etc that’s great, we massively over realise our 58% equity. On the other hand if villain calls then it’s higher variance but we’re still getting them to put more money in when they’re behind.

@@rockwithyou2006 I think it has a benefit in making it more likely that your opponent puts you on a set, which is not what you have. So, great deception. How often that causes him to make a mistake which causes your average result to change in the direction you want it to, is another matter. For this scared-money hero, a fold at least takes it down and reduces variance, and his bet did achieve that result which he strongly desired. The main downside is that if villain calls, you hit the flush, and you don't get paid off, it's not great.
