Do you mean that he should have realized which was which as soon as he found the 8 in the lower left? Or were you, like me, staring from the very start of the video, realizing that the 89 pair resolved the 78 in cell 6 at the very start of the puzzle?

This gave me anxiety issues honestly. The problem is that when I complete puzzles like this myself and take a while longer obviously, I then watch the video and I'm like oh no he doesn't see it, same with the 37 pair left top box could've been resolved with one of the first 3s to be filled in, but then he still manages to surprise me with other things like.... I had not seen a few things that he did and I'm like that would've gotten me the solution way sooner lol fuck me... So we all see different things and as Simon said many times, it is frustrating to watch, even watching himself back he apparently goes like MATEEEEE SPOT THE THINGGGG. But yeah that's always gonna happen :P.

I think a lot of things get missed because there are so many things that partially resolve at the same time, and it get's a bit overwhelming. It's a contrast to a lot of puzzels where you get to a point where there is only one path forward.

The bit of logic you missed was that if two circles in a line share the same row or column (and aren’t close together), then you have an X-wing on that number. An example would be the 17 and 37 circles in rows 8 and 9.

That was one of the first things I noticed. However, different people are drawn to different things in a puzzle and the same person may be drawn to different things in a puzzle on different days. For fun, I have taken sudokus I have done before and two-three days later I will take a completely different path to solving a sudoku. That fascinates me. No explanation as to why certain numbers stand out one day and different then next.

I find it fascinating that the 7 in r7c9 was the 9th last digit you placed in your solution, but it was the very first digit I placed. Once you have the 34 pair on c7 and the 89 pair on c8, I noticed that the 37 and 17 circles in boxes 7 and 8 effectively lock the 7 into rows 8&9 in those boxes. Thus where does the 7 go in row 7? It can't go in c7 due to the 34 pair and it can't go in c8 due to the 89 pair and thus must go in c9. The 7 and 8 you placed right after were my second and third digits, although in your case that was simply not noticing the 89 pair in r8 point at the 78 pair in r4c8 thus fixing those.

This was a great puzzle. About 90 minutes for me. The 78 pair in the 6th box was resolvable when the 89 pair below was set in. It didn't help a lot because the 78 pair had already eliminated a 7 in the top row of the third box. I looked for circles in line that had the same number That meant the number was not available in the same columns above. That kept me moving forward. I did put in too many pencil marks and I ended up removing them because they cluttered up the puzzle. How the devil does someone have the patience and the brilliance to work out a marvelous set that this puzzle was. I enjoyed it immensely. Great video and puzzle. Gene

One bit of logic that really wasn't made explicit, if you see the same digit in two different circles on the same line but not overlapping, they form an X-Wingy cancellation of that digit elsewhere. I.E. the circled 2 and 123 mean the 2 in the 1289 was forced into row 3.
@hatterson
@hatterson 4 года назад
I used this fact to have the 7 in r7c9 be the first digit I placed. I'm not entirely sure what the formal logic of it is called as it's not a true x-wing.

This took me almost 5 hours to solve, but that's because I found two possible solutions, and it really screwed me up since my sudoku solving logic isn't built for it working in more than one way. The 5/6 can be switched in the top center, the top right and the bottom right. It will work both ways.
@bolillo6767

It would work if it were a normal sudoku, but in here the lower circle of the top right indicates there must be a 6 on the 3rd row, and thus the 5/6 cannot be interchangeable

This is a really interesting variation, I really like it. Although it's my first time trying this kind as well. I think I used the circle clues much more than you did in the beginning. Like seeing the 16 and 17 both on the same line interacting with the 1289, I eliminated 1 from the right boxes of 1289 immediately. And having all those 2 number pairs I focused on looking for interacting boxes and if the pairs can eliminate anything first. etc.

The 37 and 17 clues at the bottom places the 7 in the top row of box 9. Two squares here are occupied by fixed pairs so it can only be in r7c9. Now both the 89 marked in box 9 and the 7 placed in box 9 resolves the 78 pair in box 6. (The 89 mark could have done it alone). The 16 and 17 pair between c3 and c4 eliminates the 1 from c3 in box 1, even before you have determined which clue's 1 goes in which column.

Hey, great solve once again! Do you think you could look at sudokus 39 and 40 from your Classic Sudoku on Steam? I'm really struggling at those even with the hints (which sometimes have mistakes in them!)

I found this puzzle suprisingly easy and quickly got the hang of what things to do; so thought that mayby I'd finaly finish a puzzle quicker than Simon, but alas the time started running out and just by checking the video time I knew he was faster yet again. But I was at least closer than usual. And it was fun.

It took me just under an hour, but I solved it myself! I was stuck on the first go, presumptuousness having me make a mistake again, but it's just such a great puzzle I wanted to give it my all!

49:00 exactly. A beautiful bit of painstaking logic, with x-wings all over the place for me, and a bit of a uniqueness trick in boxes 3 and 6 as well.

It is very interesting to watch you solve the puzzle, I solve it in a different way and in a different order. there was several places if you had looked along the column or row a pair could of been solved sooner in particular the 25 pair in box 4, the 78 pair in box 6 and the 89 pair in box 9. but that is easy for me to see just watching. Thanks for the interesting puzzle to solve

Super fun puzzle to solve took me almost an hour because I failed to see that the 2 circles in the top contain 6 different numbers. So that forces the 7 and the 8 to be in the 3x3 below. that in terms solves the 56 pair on the left since the 6s are forced to be on the bottom 2 squares of the most right 3x3. once I realized this, the rest quickly followed. Had a blast :) Time to see how you solve this. Edit: wow, you solved this completely differnet than how I did. My first number was the 7 in r7c9. Really cool to see your logic.

The 7 in the lower-right box was able to be figured out from almost the very start, because the 37 and 17 clues gave you a 7 for rows 8 and 9 guaranteed, and the clues in the lower-right box left only the upper-right square as a possible 7.

Wow, it's getting started that would have broken me on most puzzles. Brilliant seeing how you get going. There were so many pencil marks on this, no wonder it got confusing. For once I was yelling in my head at the screen :-D about next moves. I probably would have been much more stuck on a bunch of others that you were spot on top of. At 5:36 pretty sure the vertical 89 pair in the bottom right means should have just filled in 7 & 8 for the two cells under the 678 circle respectively rather than penciling both of them into both cells. At 8:13 after penciling the 7s in the bottom middle section, it was driving me nuts that that forces 7 as the value of row 7 column 8. Still blown away watching these solved with such a steady cadence, barely a pause.

Took me 50 minutes. I got stuck for a while until I realized that there was was a 789 triple at the top of column 7, which took me far too long to spot (nearly 40 minutes, can't believe I didn't spot that sooner), then the puzzle was basically over - everything else came together and resolved itself with relative ease. Really fun puzzle with some interesting logic behind it.

The disadvantage of pencilmarking when there are more than two positions for a digit in a box is that you forget to unwind pencilmarks. For that reason, I prefer to only do so if they’re pointing.

8:00 you could have resolved a 7 into row 7 column 9. Good solve! I would have been lost after only a couple pencil marks. You made some crazy logic decisions that I'd never have seen!

Whew! 57:57 but it was worth the time, very rewarding to finally solve it. This is a nice variant and the logic was interesting but not too complicated. I like the variants because they add their own special types of logic, so that during the solve you can switch between the variant’s logic and ordinary sudoku logic. For me this usually makes the solving process more interesting and enjoyable.

Nice puzzle but the 7's in columns 8 and 9 were available about 5 minutes in. And the 4 in R45C5 was available immediately. I think the puzzle was so cluttered with pencil marks it made it slower.

The fact that you didn't realize that the 2's in the top two rows eliminated the 2's around the 1289 really gave me some anxiety throughout the video... and you never recognized it, solving the 2 in box 1 later in a different way! Argh! Great puzzle :)

5:38 It amazed me that the 89 pair in box 9 which tells you immediately where this 7 and 8 go was never used... these ended up being some of the last digits solved 21 minutes later by doing the whole rest of the grid first instead. :)

I'm almost ashamed to say I had to start over *3* times! Combined total time on this, including restarts, was ~2h10m. BUT! In the end I managed to solve it before watching the video! This puzzle was a good exercise in making sure my logic was sound.

The 8/9 pair in the bottom right box immediately limited the 8 in the 6-7-8 circle clue on the upper middle right quadrant to the lower right cell(r4,c9), which would have given the 7 next to it (r4,c8). Also, the 3/7 pair in the top left box was resolved the moment the 3 was placed on (r3,c4).

this took me over an hour to do and i needed a few hints from you but i just have to ask...that 78 pair at 5:30 that was resolvable at 5:30 lol. did you leave that till the very end ( 25:34 ) on purpose to mess with me? lmao. thanks for another great vid.
