For the last year or so I have been making trips to Northwestern Arkansas to explore the Ozarks. There is an active flying community here that maintains and frequents really interesting grass airstrips that provide all kinds of adventures such as camping, fishing, and floating one of the many beautiful rivers that flow through the area.
There are too many to list, but mentioned in this video are the following that I highly recommend:
- Trigger Gap (17A)
- Kings River Outfitters and Trigger Gap Outfitters (they'll pick you up from the airstrip to come float and fish the river, and then take you back!)
- Recreational Aviation Foundation (theraf.org/) - creates, maintains, and promotes really unique airstrips in 20+ states across the country, including Trigger Gap. I'm really thankful for the work they do to promote aviation.
- Gaston's (3M0 - www.gastons.com/) - really nicely maintained airstrip with a cool approach and lots of cabins, as well as a lodge with a nice restaurant overlooking the White River. Check out their guided fishing trips, too!
- Byrd's Adventure Center (byrdsadventurecenter.com/fly/) - really neat camping grounds that is also a hub for other activities like ATVs, biking, hiking, and more. They've got a cool little restaurant as well on the grounds.
- Richland Creek (search for Richland Creek on airfield.guide/filter_airport...) - this is new but looks amazing. Beautiful swimming hole right next to the airstrip. From talking to the locals this seems to be a really cool up and coming airstrip.
