One of the Wildest Games of the 2000s Didn't Matter, but It Was Awesome

Hey everyone!
I've done a video similar to this before, maybe this is a series I continue moving forward? Anyway, this game occurred on the 4th of July back in 2008. The Marlins and Rockies played through a slugfest in Coors Field and while it didn't matter, it was awesome to watch.

It’s great to see how loyal those Rockies fans are. They could’ve left early numerous times, but were rewarded by their efforts to stay. Kudos to them.

It wasn't a blow-out long enough/late enough for that to really happen. The worst it ever felt was being down 13-4 in the 4th inning but by the 6th the game was close again and the swings were big and coming so fast that it was clearly shaping up to be a record high-scoring game. Any fans without a really good reason would have been absolutely nuts to start leaving during/before the 7th inning. Going from 1-down to 5-down in the top of the 7th is normally a massive boot to fans for a 7th inning stretch exodus to begin but in the vast majority of games you've just seen the score go from something like 0-1 to 0-6... The reality/possibility that something big and good could actually happen is on-existent in those cases but PALPABLE in situations like that Rockies win. It's kinda like that almost magic feeling Ahmad Rashad talks about in that 30 for 30 episode (the BEST one, Winning Time: Reggie Miller vs. The New York Knicks) about what it felt like for a Knicks fan to see Reggie go for a three and how "...nine out of ten times no one is making that shot but with Reggie, EVEN YOU think it's going in."

Grew up in Denver as a Rockies fan (and still am one despite how hard they’ve tried to get rid of all of us lol). I remember turning this game off when it was 13-4, deciding to check back in later and being utterly shocked to see that it was 17-16. Thank you for dusting off this forgotten classic!

I would love to see a video on the Dodgers' 4-run HR comeback in the 9th that happened in 2006. They hit 4 consecutive HRs to tie the game... only for the Padres to take the lead in the 10th... only for Nomah. And if I remember correctly, that game was for the division lead.

There was one tiny thing that did change as a result of this game. At the end of the season, with 74 wins, the Rockies had the 11th pick in the 2009 draft. Had they finished with 73 wins if they lost this game, they would have picked 8th. They selected Tyler Matzek with their pick, but he never did much with Colorado before his eventual release. The picks before him were Mike Minor, Jacob Turner, and Drew Storen. It wouldn’t have mattered much, but Colorado could have taken one of these players if they didn’t make their epic comeback.

Granted, the video only shows us a small sampling of pitches and velocity readings from this 13-year-old game, but the fastest of them was 94 MPH, thrown in the bottom of the 9th by then-Marlins closer Kevin Gregg. It’s hard to imagine a game nowadays in which no pitcher throws harder than 94, and in which _neither_ starter even hits 90. Gregg and Vizcaino appear to be the only two who consistently crack 90. (ADDENDUM: On the other hand, it’s very easy to imagine a game nowadays in which _every_ pitcher throws 95+, or even 100+.)

I remember a game in MLB the show where it did matter. I’m a catcher for the dodgers in MLB 18. We’re up against the Angels in the series 3-0. The Angels were determined not to get swept. So after a 1-2-3 top half (we were in Anaheim), they go up… 7-0! In the 2nd, the dodgers got it to 7-3. Bottom half? 11-3! So by the 3rd inning, we were down 8 runs! So I started the inning with a solo bomb to Centerfield (1of 3). Bellinger then cracks a 2-run bomb. Game is 11-6. Nobody scores til the 5th. Bases loaded, i come up, and crack a grand slam. Game is 11-10. Ángels then put 4 runs on the board, so we’re 15-10. Muncy pinch hits a solo . So the game is 15-11. By the 7th, angels put on 3 runs so score is now 18-11. But the dodgers were gonna get this sweep. I was on 2nd, bellinger up to bat, hits a Grandy, 18-15… but we bat around! By the time I come up to the plate, bases loaded again, I hit my 2nd grandy of the game. By this point, we were up 22-18. Ángels came back to tie it in the 8th as well, 22-22.. frickin insane. 1-2-3 top and bottom half of the 9th, we’re in Extras! I come up to the plate. Runner on 1st and 3rd. I smack a ball to the short porch in right, but it got robbed by the RF, so I got a sac fly. Bellinger scored the runner from 1st on a double. 24-22. Our closer came in, and we swept the World Series in Anaheim. Had a similar play out while playing as the Giants during a WS in MLB 20. But we lost that game 16-15, still won the series 4-1 tho. MLB the show does a great job getting someone like me hyped.

Thank you for posting this! I’ve been looking for highlights of this game for years!! That 4th of July I was 21 and decided to save money by moving back in with my parents my senior year of college. Anyways they went to some party on my dad’s friend’s yacht in San Francisco, and I planned on staying home peacefully alone and watching my Rockies (I moved to CO the first year the Rockies played at Mile High, then to Cali after HS, but still to this day I’m a diehard fan). Anyways I let one of my buddies convince me to go bar hopping and also to a party with “super hot chicks!” I mistakenly went with him had a horrible time, ended up at a party with no “super hot chicks” but a lot of people doing coke an ecstasy. I ended up getting woken up by my mom the next day when they got home at like noon with a awful hangover, and she asked if I had seen the game and she tried to explain it, I almost didn’t believe her. Until today I was never able to take that wild ride. Thank you my friend!

I was at this game. When Holliday was up with the bases loaded I stood and heard a "down in front" yell. I turned and said, "down 5, bases loaded for Matt Holliday...if I can't stand now, when can I?". Then he went yard and everyone was standing. I made sure to look back at that clown during the celebration.

Folks, notice how many of the hits in this game were doubles in the gaps and singles that fell in front of outfielders; it's not the home runs that kill you at Coors, it's the dinks and donks that pile up because of the outfield acreage. And here's something that no one has ever really learned: NEVER intentionally walk ANYONE at Coors, EVER!

I mean... realistically, no baseball game matters. The MLB doesn't have promotion and relegation, so the results are meaningless. A team could lose every game in a season and not be punished for this at all. Only money matters. Only market share, ticket sales and media penetration. I love baseball, and hope that one day the US will allow meritocracy into their sports, to make the matches meaningful.
@IdliAmin_TheLastKingofSambar
@IdliAmin_TheLastKingofSambar 3 года назад
I vehemently disagree with the premise that using a closed system makes results meaningless. None of the major North American sports leagues uses promotion and relegation-for good reason. Such a system would make no economic sense here; it would exacerbate issues of competitive imbalance between large-market and small-market teams, unnecessarily introduce all kinds of financial instability into leagues that have been remarkably stable for decades, and would be pretty bewildering (and likely dispiriting) to most sports fans in the U.S. and Canada. Even Major League Soccer uses a closed system. I don’t know much about soccer, but my sense is that there is _far_ less correlation between what city a Premier League or La Liga team (for example) is based and where their fans are located, than is the case for Major League Baseball teams, or really for any of the major sports here. We have a huge population that is distributed over a large geographic area, there’s a relatively large number of teams in each major league, each with huge costs of acquisition and operation, and there are multiple different sports competing for eyeballs and dollars.
@apocrypha5363
@apocrypha5363 3 года назад
@@IdliAmin_TheLastKingofSambar it works, it just means that the matches themselves don't actually matter. It's not an athletic competition, it's just a series of brands competing for sales figures. Teams are not punished or rewarded for the results of matches... that's just a fact. A team could lose 112 games in a season... and start the next season in the exact same competitive position as they would if they'd lost 60 games. It therefore can't be denied that individual match results have no real value. Honestly, you are missing out by not having meritocratic sports in the US. Sure, it'd be hard to switch to that now, maybe impossible, but it's so much better when teams earn their spots in the big leagues, where no one can rest on their laurels, where small teams have the ability to one day become big teams, where the biggest teams still have to fight every season... it's so much more impactful, and so much closer to what *sport* should be: a competition.
