The Hainanese will be taking over this episode of SCCC’s new dialect culture video series! Most famously known for introducing chicken rice to Singapore, the Hainanese are masters of the food and beverage trade. But they're so much more than that! Embark on a journey via this video to find out what makes the Hainanese, Hainanese.
"One of Us" is a video series on dialect culture in Singapore. Having two parts, episodes one to five are a tribute to the dialect group. It is a collage of everything from favourite foods and sayings to traditional practices and insider jokes to tease out the spirit of the dialect group. Outsiders get a sense of the 'flavour' of the dialect group and people of the dialect group feel the pride of being 'one of them'.
Whereas episodes six to ten highlight the complexity and commonalities of dialect cultures through a different type of “zijiren” 自己人 - tribes of people banded by how they experience dialect culture in today's context.
