Worked on quite a few Y blocks over the years. You might want to remove both valve covers the next time you get her running. Check for proper oil flow to both rocker shafts. The Ford y blocks tend to sludge up and block oil passage way's in the cylinder block and heads. They used to sell top oiler kits for the rocker arm assembly that connects to the oil pressure sending units. The fix is to remove the heads and ream out L shaped oil passage in the block. Get yourself a dwell meter to check your points gap and for wornout bushings in the distributor. Dwell should show 27 degrees. Drop me a message if you need any advice. I grew up with these cars back in the 1960s and have a lot of knowledge on them. Most of the mechanics who worked on them are long gone.

U made my day! Neighbors had a 60 Starliner...what a nerdy girl, they had when I was only in Kindergarten. STILL a Ford Girl at 68. Remember those seats flipping when hit from a tar truck from behind. RIP for that one - they certainly are rare!

Owned that same year and model with red interior when I joined the USAF in 1971. Drove to my first assignment at Dover DE only to have it stolen a few months later. It was a beautiful high gloss black with chrome wheels! I would still own it today if it hadn’t been stolen.

I learned to drive in my mom's 60 Fairlane. I think it is one of the best looking Fords ever. Overdrive. It is operated electrically. When you shift int 3rd and want OD, you let off the gas and it shifts. The cable is to disable OD. Push forward for electric OD. Pull out to disable.

CJ is a great little guy reminds me of my grandson. he's bright and observant. he knew what you were doing with the compression test and immediately got a system going where you didn't have to tell him "when" he started and stopped at the right moments. great moments with your boys they'll treasure

Nice ole Ford!, Always liked the Starliner!, My 1959 Ford Fairlane had the same powertrain when I got it minus the overdrive, The 292 was blown and I ended up putting a 390 with a C6 in it that came out of my 1976 F100!
@jimmangum7566
@jimmangum7566 7 месяцев назад
A little about the overdrive... The cable is only for disengaging the overdrive so it won't operate, for example if you are in the mountains & you don't want it to engage. To engage the overdrive you let up off the accelerator about 35 mph or above. You will feel a slight lurch, then when placing your foot back on the accelerator you should be able to tell you have slower rpms. If you need to pass someone with maximum performance, press the accelerator to the floor and the O/D will disengage for maximum performance. Afterwards let your foot back off the gas and it will re-engage. It is operated by a kickdown switch under the accelerator, a relay on the firewall, & a Borg-Warner overdrive unit mounted on the back of the transmission. There is also a solenoid and a governor on the Borg Warner unit. I had a 56 Ford with overdrive. Loved it! I enjoy the channel and hope this info helps!

Y-Blocks are pretty great! Don't get talked into switching to something else, Ys can be very quick and they have an exhaust note like no other engine. Very much worth the eventual rebuild, built one at the shop and it is surprisingly fast and reliable especially with a good balance job. You may have issues getting oil to the top end- oil comes from the middle cam bearing and the bores can get sludgy. Both rocker shafts can be easily modified to get more pressure. When you rebuild, Iskendarian has a peach of a cam for the Y-Block, and there are new lifters out there. Do your research and have a ball, it is absolutely worth loving up this particular engine.

Nice find and I look forward to seeing more videos on the car and what you guys end up doing with it. I love watching your videos because it brings back memories of the days my dad and I worked on my old cars and I used the same phrase Jack uses ( Hey Day ). Put tags on a '60 Galaxie in May '72, month before I turned 16. I also tagged a '60 Impala the same week, but it went straight into our shop for a LS6 and 4-speed, so the Galaxie was my 1st legal driver. It was bought new by my farming grandfathers neighbors wife, I knew the car very well. Her husband was a racer-model A's-B's- when they married and began farming so she had rodding in her system. She always said he had his V8 antique tractor builds, she ordered her hot rod. 2 door, 352/360hp, 3 on the tree with overdrive cable, dealer installed air. Their drives were about 1/16th of a mile apart, you knew when she was going to town. She could power shift into 3rd at G'pas' drive, with the best of them with a 3 on the tree. They retired and were moving to town in early '72, had their farm auction. I always asked to be the 1st allowed to buy it but he wanted everything sold to the highest bidder, he and I weren't the best of friends at all. I went with the idea I'd pay 750-800 if needed, opened the bid at $200, no one else bid. It was a12 year old, oxidized brown paint, farm wife Ford is all they knew. I kept that car even when I had other street/strip cars, and it surprised a lot of late '60s and early '70s street rodders when we'd go to the 'Y' and race. Say 352 and everyone thought of the sickest FE V8. Enjoy that Starliner. And it's funny that the thing you like about that '60 is the thing I liked the least about the '60-the front/grill/headlights.

I'm not telling you anything you probably don't already know, but if that thing has been in a barn for 40 years, you will definitely need to keep it covered if you are leaving it outside and are hoping to save the paint. That paint will degrade very quickly in the sun if it hasn't been in the sun for that long. The interior will fade out quickly as well. I love these cars. You don't see many anymore, and they are beautiful cars. This is an awesome find. I'm jealous, lol.

Enjoy every minute with your son.... They're invaluable. 😊 On a side note: Perry Mason episode had a Star Liner in it once (maybe twice). Though it appeared black (who could say with B&W footage) it also sported the mechanical folding / hideaway semi-hard top. Talk about gorgeous I'd love to have one myself (w/ classic Cragers) though I'm an old Chevy guy myself. Anyway...here's hope you success and best of life.😊

In the 70's my friend bought one that was a convertible, top retracted into the trunk. He pulled up to my house and looked pretty beat up, and like a Grandma's car and said "get in". He floored it and my head snapped back as we left a patch of smoke and rubber that amazes me to this day. If I remember right it had a Thunderbird engine (said Thunderbird on the valve covers anyway and was a big block 4??) What a cream puff. Yours is far better looking.

Here in Wisconsin these were absolute rust buckets. A friend of my parents had one and by 1968 it was gone. My father had a 1959 Ranch Wagon with overdrive. I remember him pulling the handle under the dash and it would engage over a certain speed.

The Starliner was manufacture for nascar. The 60 and 61 Galaxie had an air lift at high speed. The Starliner had that sloping back window and a little difference in front end length to keep it aerodynamic. They produced just over 500 each year.so it could be a production model to run as a stock car. I owned a 60 with a 390 special order car w/ auto transmission. Mine was red with a white top and was 1 owner car by a lady in Galveston Texas It was her dead husbands car.

Finding a solid, fairly straight and complete Starliner is like winning the lottery... It just doesn't happen. I don't know what you paid so I can't say if you paid too much, but I can say that you have a NICE STARLINER. With running it to warm it up and then letting it cool several times any rings that are stuck should free up. Congratulations on a great barnfind score on a fairly RARE car. Nice find! Those are far and few between. If your son 3-D prints the top of that "S" on the deck lid lock cover, you could have it vacuum plated in gold to match the rest of the emblem. And I'm pretty sure that SMS Auto Fabric would probably have the original seat cloth. Man, the rear glass in those '60 and '61 cars sure was neat! I am originally from Ada, OK but lived in Missouri for several decades. We would drive down I-44 and go south at Stroud. Still going south, past the I-40 junction is the town of Seminole. For at least a decade, on the south end of Seminole was a storage lot with metal fencing and a metal gate. It was chocked full of 1960 Fords. No other year or brand. I often wonder where they went. That was a one year unique style as you know. My Uncle had a new one that I still recall in the mid 60s. Look forward to seeing this one cleaned up and on the road. It is definitely worth it as it seems to be pretty much rust free.

My dad bought a 60 Fairlane when I was 14. Never was a fan of the styling that year, but my dad didn’t ask my opinion. It had a 6 cylinder with 3 on the tree and overdrive. It was the car I learned how to drive when I was of age. Your overdrive knob is pulled out in the lock out position. We used overdrive when driving in the mountains when we went fishing kicking it in and out second and second over. One time dad reved the heck out of it in low and got it into first over. That old Ford made a lot of cross country trips and using overdrive got up to 24 mpg which was pretty good for the times. I learned how to pass trucks on a two lane road crossing Texas with dad sitting in the back seat telling me to hit it when the way was clear. Just kicked it out of overdrive and go around the truck. My mom was a nervous wreck when it was over. The only problem dad ever had with the car was the carburetor used to split apart while driving. So as soon as he smelled fuel he would pull over and tighten the loose screws and be on his way until the next time. He said that Ford was the most dependable car he ever owned.

When the OD knobs is pulled out it usually locks out the overdrive. When pushed in, OD is operational. You simply drive down through the gears and when you want to engage OD you let off the gas in 3rd and you will feel the OD unit kick in. There is probably a kickdown switch under the accelerator to kick it out of OD back to normal 3rd gear if needed. LETTING off the accelerator again reactivates THE OD. Yep, I had three cars with OD back in the 60's.
