Totally agree. I’m fed up with bloated rules, spread out between multiple books and continual change. GW make beautiful models and a fantastic IP, but they can’t write rules for toffee imho.
I see OPR and I like. It’s a great company and a great system of games. I love them for the core engine being used across Sci Fi and Fantasy genres, which opens up a whole new fun world of crazy scenarios (Chaos Space Marines taking over a Warriors of Chaos army and invading Talabheim? Yes please).
Another advantage to OPR is Patreon supporters get access to a Points Cost Generator. OPR are a small company, and can't or don't want to stat every single unit in Warhammer. The unit generator lets you punch in the stats you want, and the system will spit out a points cost for it. So if there's a part of your model collection that isn't covered in the army lists, maybe sign up for the Patreon to stat it yourself.
I'm with you, Doug! Not a fan of AoS3 or 40K9. Too much bloat. Too many moving parts. Loving OPR! Also, what version were you using? I played against a friend and had a miscommunication. I was on the app (2.5) and he was on the last version (2.1).
Agree with this. Against frenzy units you really need an anvil that can blunt the charge, giving flanking units (like the wolves) a perfect exhausted target to crush. Also, unless you want to bait a charge, don't position troops along your deployment zone if you know your opponent has melee scouts.
I started Tyranids because I adore the models, the lore, etc. As a painter, primarily speaking, I pick models that I want to paint regardless of it they're good or not. OPR sounds like a good solution to relieve the issue I have with buying a new thing I think is cool and having it be so good that it's not fun to play. I HATE the flavor of the month vibe GW has been giving off for a long time now. I can't wait to try this out!
Just two minor corrections, the army list builder is free for everyone (not Patron exclusive) and Wild Orcs aren't undercosted, they can't be as all armies and unit costs are generated from the same formula. In this case their weaknesses (awful quality/defense) are offset by their high mobility and massed attacks because vampiric undead are pretty much the worst matchup against them that I can think of with their limited access to ranged units or spear infantry with Phalanx (which removes their bonus attacks when charging).
Switched to OPR when AoS 3 hit, not looking back. Also got into 3D printing after a while. Not looking back either. With the right printer like the Anycubic Mono 4K or Elegoo Mars 3, the learning curve of 3D printing is still there, but much less painful. Before had a budget of about 200 € for hobby stuff per month. Guess what? I am not even spending half of it now and am having way more models at my disposition than ever before. Well worth it in my opinion. The rules themselves are fun, come with all sorts of expansions (regiments for old school regiment play anyone) and even with AI for solo play. Oh yeah, the army builder (beta) let's you design your OWN units and calculates points values for them, to pull literally anything into the games. How cool is that! And the core rules for each games really do fit on one page printed back and front (not just the army lists)! They get you playing in like 10 minutes. OPR also offers an extended version of the core rules, which you can download for free from their website and comes with more explanations and some additional rules. And then there is the paid version that you can buy on WGV and Drive-Through RPG (comes free with tier 1 patreon) of an extended rule book with further rules options. Never played as much both with buddies and on my own as with OPR. And I have never painted more.
Just finally getting around to giving OPR rule sets a try, have been aware of them for a couple years now, even printed one out one winter 2 years ago...just didn't get around to it.... I do think they have some 1 page stuff, and I think that was somewhat where stiff started out before theu came up with the full games they have out nowdays... Seems like great stuff, and I plan to join their Patreon after summer ends...
I love One Page Rules and have been a Patreon supporter since their early days there. I’m wondering if you used the 2.50 army lists? These are in extended beta-testing, or something, but they are available to Patreon supporters. The Wild boys may have been nerfed in that version (I don’t know). One nice thing about the company is they do regularly tweak the army lists to rebalance things. If the Wild Orcs really are out of line and people bring it up on the Discord or their website forum, it’ll get noticed and double-checked. The reason it’s called One Page Rules is because for every game system they do have a free single-sheet version of the rules. They also offer the larger core rules free and then the FULL rule book is available on Patreon, but honestly, the core rules are fine. I doubt many people use the single-sheet rules, but it does make an excellent reference sheet! IIRC, several of the Grimdark army lists are 4 pages. I’ve played a couple games of Age of Fantasy skirmish; Ghostly Undead versus Eternal Warriors (Stormcast). Both games were nail-biters, coming down to the last activation for victory. I’ve played 3-4 games of Grimdark Future and those were also really, really close (Battle Brothers versus Orks). The games are fast, with easy rules to understand so not much page-flipping, confusion or unclear language to puzzle over. You can play multiple games per session and use whatever minis you want. It’s all positives, afaic. One Page Rules… rules! 😁
Which army versions were you using? I'm not a Boyz player, but the 2.5 beta list that the army forge webapp uses are really well balanced compared to the older list.

i played last week with a friend of mine 1 game of warhammer fantasy armies project. i liked it a lot, but he thinks that it's overhelming with rules, contents. needs too much dedication. and since i have wh dwarfs i just cannot play age of sigmar. and because of that, i'm thinking about playing with him, age of fantasy regiments. i love the idea of rank and file.
A good choice. Regiments, like most OPR games, is functionally just Age of Fantasy, except with the additional of the rank-and-flank movement. It's a very breezy system, that is quick to learn.
I enjoy Grimdark Future but for me it doesn't hold candle to how good 40K is right now. Age of Fantasy however, is a massive improvement over how bad AoS is these days. It's just a case of trying to get people to play it and that's my problem.
A few things to keep in mind about my anecdotal experience: We werent playing "full" games, sticking to a smaller size. We used skewed lists that favors specific things, and we were learning as we went. That being said, I've heard nothing but praise from its players!
