You touched on my favorite part of 3D printing; GW still puts out their obsolete sprues because the molds are still viable, but OPR is tweaking a model stl right now to make it perfect. If we stay loyal to the factory system, we'll always be stuck with corporate profits coming first.
@@gaminggeek241 What are you printing your minis on? I assume it's been mentioned before but I usually watch all your Terrain Videos. Nevermind, I finally got to that part, lol.
Hey, it's the dungeon miser! How is life treating you? I hope you gonna be able to pick up the army building videos in the near future again, I really enjoyed those.
How long do those molds last? I'm surprised GW hasn't moved on to 3D printing their minis in this day and age; and still relying on the old injection molding process.
@@JoeyJoJoJoestarJuniorShabadoo They're metal moulds for injection plastic so they last a LONG time. Hell some of the older moulds are still being used. Asuran is from 1994 if you can believe it, they're using a mould that's older than most people getting into the hobby today. I believe these were older rubber spincast moulds that are now being used for finecast resin instead. As for why they don't 3D print their miniatures, economy of scale. Basically it's cheaper for them to do injection mould plastic because whilst it has a massively higher intitial cost, the cost of upkeep is tiny (generally speaking) and they can also mass produce more miniatures that way for a fraction of the cost (the markup on GW miniatures is frankly absurd). For the home consumer, however, 3D printing is much more cost effective because you're not looking to crank out millions of models a day which then need to be shipped to brick and mortar stores world wide and online shipping. 3D printing massively reduces those overhead costs because all the creator has to do is create an STL, no stores, no shipping etc, all the cost on time and materials is moved to the end user. If GW was smarter they'd probably make their move towards 3D printing resin bits by selling the STLs instead of having to buy them from Forgeworld as a starting experiment BUT we all know Corporations hate change that could ruin their established business model. However the funny thing is Games workshop DO 3D print models...all of their masters for the moulds are designed on computers and then 3D printed these days, there's almost no 'hand sculpting' going on at GW anymore.
Dude, don't buy that line about them not fitting sprue in a box. If they wanted to make the models wallet friendly they would have put them in a bigger box and actually give you what you need for complete units. But GW is a soulless basket of ass so they rig the system so you have to buy more product in order to get your guys on the table.
@@casanovafunkenstein5090 Exactly, in warhammer fantasy the minimum rank size was 4. Who knows if that was a game decision or a sculpting limitation, but they would absolutely be able to make the AOS blocks that you buy a multiple of 4 instead of 5 for the older units if they wanted to.
If you collect more then one army you are right - if I collect one army you need to put the 3d printer into account and they are not that cheap - if you want a good one.
@@melchoriuz8116 You can get a great 2k printer for under 200 (I got my 4K printer for around 255 once it was converted to my local currency) get resin on weekend sales I recently got 4KG for less than the price of 2KG and STLs are cheap, two or so Paterons will have you sorted big time (6-12 bucks each)
@@melchoriuz8116 uh, you can print a playable army including the printer and resin for under 400$. So yeah, printing beats GW in 10/10 cases. Most people also won't stop after one army.
I think we are going to see these sort of Patreon more and more. I do collect a “few” stl files, but haven’t really started down the miniatures and much as terrain side yet. We are, however, doing a big Slow Grow 40k campaign at our school club at the moment. I haven’t promoted 40k in years to the kids due to the cost, but we are doing 9 out of the 16 armies as fully printed. Models are all from various patreons or from paid files that one of my original club members (now in his 30’s) and I have bought and are printing up for the kids. We now have almost as many girls in the club as guys, with 8 of the printed armies going to the girls. They are getting 1500pt armies for only $30-40, compared to several hundred. All started because I bought a Photon…. I do love jumping down rabbit holes.
One Page Rules do awesome models, and equally brilliant rules. Still very impressed with how much tactical depth they have managed to cram into a rule set that is so small. Been doing a lot of videos on their games, big fan of their stuff. Still need to get a 3D printer to get some of their stuff printed off. Also, great painted models.
That saurus box is literally the worst start collecting box that they sell unfortunately. It has some if the oldest models and the units are all advisable by 4 because that was the minimum rank size in warhammer fantasy.
Well back when you could still buy the Carnosaur separate it was a decent deal since you basically bought a carnosaur and got everything else for free lol. I’m excited to see this review of OPR saurus because I was looking at them and wondering how they stacked up, very impressed!
They look awesome bro. Tired of the old models. I kit bashed some updated saurus knights using a drakespawn kit, a blood bowl team, and bits from the original knights. It was like 120 bucks for 6 of them 🤣 they look good but it's kind of ridiculous. Could've just bought and printed an entire army.
I feel like you're really tempting fate with these direct comparisons. I love the stuff that onepagerules and other creators are making, but with the way gw swings its dick around I'd rather not see these smaller companies take any heat
Here's the thing, Game mechanics and rules are not entitled to copyright protection. And OPR makes their own models and designed their own rules so GW has no grounds. Yes there may be some likeness, but there is no IP infringement. If there was GW have already struck. OPR is amazing and I love everything they are doing.
I can't believe the hate they are throwing at fan-made video producers. I mean, it's basically free advertising for their products. And the Cursed City fiasco is head-scratching as well.
@@gaminggeek241 something more unbelievable GW reports record Quarterly profits ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z6RlI2z1-X0.html And underpays their staff ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hLyJYpDcFvQ.html
Great video. I really like the look of the Seraphon because I got my first models from warhammer direchasm. Those are new models and they look great. I had no idea the other models were old and look that ugly. The one page rules models look way much better. This is definitely the better option. Thanks for this video comparison!
Yup its cheaper to get a printer some resin and some army files or go to pateron and sub to a couple and you can get lots of armies, cool models or figures :) Its what I done myself recently mostly for painting and making cool Dioramas.
Nice comparison sir. Just watched a video from another channel who also printed out an army from OPR. Nice to see that there are affordable minis out there for those with 3D printers. Unfortunately, I do not own a 3D printer but am strongly considering when to pull the trigger to get one.
Yeah, I don't even have the current generation resin printers and I'm getting awesome quality for minis. The technology keeps getting better and better. I can't wait until we get color printers for home use!
I printed a Sons of Behemet army for less then 100 bucks including files, printing a Slaves of darkness army now and a Iron Jaws army after that. I printed 15 blight kings for less then $40 they are 5 for $65. I plan to print even more armies. I play in my garage with friends but until their prices go way down on models they will not be receiving any money from me. I still buy battletomes and the rules just not the models. GW is in trouble when it comes to 3d printing and they know it. Just choose not to change.
There are so many alternatives. I used mostly Duncan Luca Shadows models for a whole Skaven army. Had to do some digital kit bashing, which is part of the fun. All printed on an ender 3. Could also use Cult miniatures for a more authentic look. And even some from Punga minis. Love the channel.
If you are looking for something more SciFi, there are also the Raygun Raptors on myminifactory ($29.99 for the whole army) - which work with the One Page Rules for Human Defense Force or Soul Snatchers (Ogres / Brutes = Saurian Crocodiles)
First time I see OPR models, and I am impressed! He was spot on hoe derpy most of the GW sculps are. Most of them are for ages past, but what infuriates me is the ludicrous prices GW asks for. I am to do my homework on the rest of OPR's product line. I mean, I already have a 3D printer ;)
Well, once you take in account you can print your minis while you are at work, doing something else (painting the one you printed ?), cleaning/curing a batch while the other is printing,... In fact, it can be pretty quick, especially with pre-supporter files.
On your assumption about the unit size: Saurus Warriors actually weren't updated since 6th edition Warhammer Fantasy (which is roughly 18 years). In 6th, a rank was made of 4 models (changed to 5 in 7th) so all boxes from this time were made as multiples of 4: 16 Saurus Warriors, 8 Saurus Knights, 16 Chaos Warriors, 16 Dryads etc etc. Everytime you see a unit that comes in a multiple of 4 you know, GW hasn't touched this unit for over a decade.
I noticed that the OnePageRules models look very similar to the Total War in-game models, so it's nice if you want a physical version of your in-game Lizardman army
great video. I loved my gw models and game for a long time - but nowadays (Post covid) - none of my friends play 40k/AOS anymore - we got tired of the race to keep buying books, power creep and needing the newest models. Now - we use OPR and play with what we want.
GW: $440 + $40-50 for the Seraphon book. OPR: $78, leaving $362 for a 3D printer and resin, which if you're going the economical route will really only cost you about $200ish, which after the initial investment becomes significantly less expensive for future armies. Plus the OPR rule set is more fun, because it's easier to get into.
10:00 thats one of the dumbest things GW did recently. Back when Warhammer was around you always had the proper number of minis around. 5, 10, 20 or in some cases 3 if its bigger units like Khemri ushabti or Brettonian Pegasus Knights. Im am so sick of GW that i am glad they killed Warhammer and brought me to Kings of War. 11:22 and thats not even a huge army.... 13:22 i really like that the 3D printed Kroxi is wielding a Vulcan Lirpa :D (just missing the pummel at the bottom)
You channel is the epitome of not hesitating and procrastinating and just getting the army painted. Up close those models aren't going to win a Golden Daemon but on the table that collection looks fantastic. Great job.
bye now yours starting to see the panic with GW there shutiing down many , even some cosplayers are now worried that there going to get told to stop dressing up like a space marine or xeno
Wow. This is my first look at these OPR minis. Amazing. I have been on the fence about buying seraphon forever just to paint but for every awesome sculpt there are like 5 terrible ones. Unfortunately I don't see myself dealing with troubleshooting a 3d printer in the next decade or so until they are completely ridiculously user friendly. Maybe I will find someone to print these bad boys for me.
Honestly, my experience has been pretty solid; I'm not a complete luddite, but I don't have a lot of patience with troubleshooting, and the Elegoo Mars 2 Mono I got a few months back worked right out of the box for me, and it only took maybe three print runs to figure out settings that worked for what I needed. I'm currently working on a couple of small OPR armies, Alien Hives and Battle Sisters, and they're pretty great. 😁
Yes, gw has some models they charge a ton for. They have Single models that aren't anything that special that cost the same or more than an entire 3d printer setup with resin and all.
I'm very much a casual player, OPRs are interesting for the rulesets, incredibly accessible, but myself and I imagine most people are not going to have a 3D printer or expense for one. GWs sprus are dated but I'm still going to buy box and not make my own
Great video. I'm saving money for a 3d resin printer now. Have you had a chance to check out scale 75 instant color line? Supposed to be better than gw contrast colors. Keep up the good work
@@gaminggeek241 they launched it via kickstarter, works pretty much like Contrast, but even in the campaign they didn't overpromise like the stupid GW hype, and they're cheaper, like decent, not extortion prices. They're not 1:1 equivalent though, they have their own color palette. They also have primer sprays with it. Worth a look.
GW should make it's own 3D printing subscription. Than offer authorization for people who can 3d print on demand to become authorized GW printers to ensure quality and no offshoot models. Than they can do some limited runs as physical models only and be happy for the rest of the time.
You can get the Atlas support in the Discord without being a Patreon. The 3d Support section of the discord is open to anyone who comes in. Just for anyone who's having problems out there.
I love these little saurian guys. Thanks so much @gaminggeek for sharing your experience and process. I'm working on the crocs right now I wish we saw them painted in the video. I'm guessing you use the same process on them as the lizard warriors only with a green wash and the bone'/tan wash for the underbelly? I really like how your entire army's color scheme turned out. They all compliment each other well. I printed out my crocs about 150% to scale so they tower over the skinks like how similar units were proportioned in a certain video game. I think the lore also works this way where the crocs give a moral boost to the little guys. Thanks again for all you do!
I noticed the Lizardmen in the thumbnail and you instantly got my attention. Really great video! Very informational and the painting tutorials will come in handy! I subbed :)
Can someone please put a video out about what " broken" and "blanced" means and why GW has such h a hard time doing that? Why is it so hard to put out a balanced game w/no need for updates and additions and editions!?!? Please, can someone explain thoroughly!?
It's not hard but they make more money by intentionally overpowering newer models or changing the meta to make poorly selling models more powerful to increase sales. Also, they make money by updating all the rulebooks/faction books every few years.
Ok, first, not really defending GW here, I really like the OPR sculpts, but the reason the posing on the GW miniatures is the way it is, if you put the nice dynamic miniatures on square bases and try and form ranks with them like 9th ed Warhammer Fantasy you are going to have a hard time. That's it, figured I'd hit on that point.
I just started with wargaming, OPR and 3d printing, are these OPR models scaled up in size? mine seem to be way smaller once printed and unpainted. Thnx!
They seem to be the same scale as the GW models, as you can compare in the video, side-by-side. You can always scale up if you want them to be larger--one of the many benefits of printing!
The one thing that people always leave out of these types of videos is time. Time is the only currency you cannot get more of and thus needs to be accounted for. While i am a patreon of OPR I still buy GW models. It is far quicker for me to build and clean mold lines and have something to paint vs 3d printing a model. I know time is valued differently by everyone but it should still be accounted for and listed alongside the dollar values.
You sir, just earned yourself a subscriber. I'm not a big fan of the One Page Rules rules themselves, I think they can be vastly improved with some tweaking, but I'm all for the concepts.
My one big thing with the OPR lizards are a lack of musician and standard haha. Also, a part of the posing and number of models with the old saurus models is that they needed to rank up base to base in rectangle formations. A unit of 8 cavalry or 16 infantry, arranged 4 wide at the front, wasn't unusual in the game when the models came out. GW has since standardized units across the games at 3/5/10 unit sizes Also, their Blood Bowl line has consistently been knocking it out since the relaunch, for whatever reason
I am currently printing a Battle Sisters army from onepagerules , defiantly less detailed simpler figures than GW BUT I like the simpler style , great Nuns with guns vib :)
well the day GW start offering their own stl files or lowers their obscene prices, i'd gladly stick to buying their stuff. but at this point i still haven't managed to buy enough for my 2k army, meanwhile the printer keeps pumping and has already paid for it's price
I'm super bias here as Lizardmen were my original WH:F army, thought they looked great and all that, but when you did that side by side comparison... man they're pretty bad. OPR all the way.
If you want to avoid copyrights call them lizardmn. The having aztecish lizardmen isn't super original, I am hard pressed to think of ones that are not. A compedator making imperial guard should call them imperial guard, its a reference to napoleons soldiers anyway, can that be trademarked.
About to dive into OPR. Will still be using my Warhammer models but damn those OPR lizardmen are sharp. If this game clicks and I get into it deep enough I may have to start a new army up.
Is resign, that can be cleaned with water, have less quality? Or is there a reason you want to use the resign you have to cure with uv rays? Also I would love to see the Core Space game played using the Aliens models from Nemesis or the equivalent
Water Washable resin is usually not as strong (can be brittle) and or flexible as resins that must be washed with a degreaser like LAawesome or IPA, it also needs to be cured with a UV lamp. A Wash n' Cure takes care of both and you can use a degreaser if IPA is not around or preferences
I have used water washable resin and like lordnovas says, it isn't as strong. But as long as you aren't dropping your minis, I think it is fine. It is definitely much easier to work with but you still need to cure with UV light.
Those saurians are Saurus of my dreams... I regreat getting into Seraphons few years ago, painting 40+ of them and getting tired of it - oth same thing being panted and terrible loook.
Games workshop refuse to fix the old models and the massive difference between quality of some of the models and then seem shocked people would rather buy 3d prints from people who do much better job with Lower quality printers
So for the price of one army I could, potentially, buy 2 printer setups and two armies to print up and play with. Damn I need to really research resin printing and safety.
Are you going to be doing another one of these? :) Another cool company is Archvillain Games, they also have a pateron and all each month is a cool new theme, You can easily make armies out of alot of their stuff and super cool style :-) or just for some amazing proxies for other games. No rules but can get DnD rules for them though more meant for dnd but easily can be used for war gaming or in my case mostly painting and cool dioramas
I didn't see Claybeast Creation get covered, but he does some amazing Starscales that work as proxies, and have about the same coverage of the Seraphon as OPR
I used Dark Angels Green Contrast for the skin and Skeleton Horde (or Seraphim Sepia wash) for the underbelly. Then I just used black paint for the spikes on the back. Hope that helps!
@@gaminggeek241 Thank you for the quick response. I enjoy your speed painting approach while still getting excellent table top results. Cuts down on the hordes of grey plastic I have sitting around.
@@malcolmreynolds4365 Definitely! I used to spend hours painting each model and then realized I would never get to playing anything so had to speed up my painting. Totally worth it!
I don't have any of Mantic's salamanders but I've heard others use the models as Seraphon. In fact, you can use most of Mantic's line as a cheaper option for GW games if you don't want to 3D print.
