I play 40k with OPR, to any 40k veterans out there curious about this, Im a 15 year veteran and just couldn't deal with the rules bloat and having stuff constantly obsoleted anymore. This rule set is absolutely incredible, easy to learn, easy for newer players to grasp, requires less models but can scale to absolutely gigantic battles, gets rid of long downtime by removing the out dated turn system of 40k, and most importantly, Its incredibly fast and fun to play, try it, its free, you might even be able to get your spouse into this like I did.

I was a 30-year 40K veteran; I gave up on 40K in 2017 because of the endless rules bloat, supplements, formations, strategems, FAQs, and rule books becoming obsolete within a few months of purchase. One-Page Rules has totally rejuvenated me, and I'm incredibly happy to be able to use my enormous collection of 40K models again in a game that's easy, fun, and fast. Not to mention, OPR's Army Forge list builder is absolutely incredible.

Why gave up on it and not just go back and play an older edition of the game that you did enjoy?
@ecyor0
@ecyor0 2 года назад
@@crowgoblin first if all, plenty of people have done that, Horus Heresy maintained an active community around the 7th edition ruleset for years. But even the older editions suffer from rules bloat and expansion power creep - there has never really been a point where all the armies where even in parity with each other, let alone balanced. And secondly, if you want to get people to play a "non-standard" version of the game, you have the hurdle of "but I need to relearn rules" to overcome. If you're going to need to do that anyway, you may as well use a more streamlined rules system that avoids the unreasonable mental overhead of a 40k game.

Once I had all of kill team books and some armies made. They decided to scrap it again and reboot another line of killteam books to buy. Even if you would prefer using miniatures, the quick start paper standees make for effective ways of learning the system, or teaching the system to people new to wargaming. You know, before you commit to buying and assembling and painting minis, which is a not insignificant investment of time and money. Having a ready-made "product" that you can just download, that lets you get right to playing, goes a long way towards helping people into the hobby. GW has _attempted_ products in this ballpark, but in the style of a magazine subscription that sells a few models per issue and part of the game rules that teach you how to play over the course of many _months._ Like, I don't care that it might be "a better deal", compared to the normal way to get into Warhammer, it doesn't compare to a free starter set you can print out and play at home. Not even close.

The Army Forge list builder is so much better than anything else I've seen. Without even knowing much about an army I can whip up a decent list in 5-10 minutes and print it all out on one page (including a reference with everything you need to know to run that army). Having 1 sheet of the core rules and another sheet of the army rules makes everything so fast to play.

Don't forget about their 2D minis! As much as the topic of mini price comes up these days, I really think standees need to be more prominent in this hobby. Not only are they more cost-efficient, they are easier to produce, color, print, replace, and store than metal/resin/plastic 3d painted miniatures. There is also plenty of room to "deluxify" them by having printed plastic sheets or acrylic with different front/back graphics.

I've been a patron of One Page Rules for a year now. I have about three complete armies (and skirmish teams) for BOTH Sci-fi and Fantasy worlds. That's six armies that are as fun and unique to play as 40k stuff. Honestly, for the fantasy stuff, I'm loving the quality and differences in sculpts more. Hands down, Saurians beat Seraphon on sculpts for a direct comparison, but most of the options are going completely unique and that's been super-neat. I'm so glad I took the plunge into the 3D printing side of the hobby. It really brings in a wider scope and restores that sense that this is MY hobby, not some addiction to a particular company's products.

I really love the systems, especially the skirmish versions as that's my preferred play style. The great thing about it is that if you learn one version of the skirmish game, or the fully army game, you've basically learnt the other version as well as they use the same "engine" across both fantasy and sci-fi. The other great thing is that they play so quickly that you can easily get multiple games in during a single session. If you're into the 3d printing side of things then they're also one of the best value Patreons out there providing units for both fantasy and sci-fi each month, generally it takes about 3 months to get the complete army list of units, as well as fleets for their starship battle game. They also provide faction specific terrain and objectives. The discord and facebook groups are very active, so much so that you're unlikely to keep on top of all the different discussions that are going on. I'd highly recommend them to anyone and since I introduced it to my local club it's become one of the main games we play with a game running at least once a month.
@Bluecho4
@Bluecho4 2 года назад
That all the games use the same "engine" is a big selling point here. For as many ways that they share mechanics, there's far more of GW's games that differ wildly from each other. If you liked Kill Team but want to expand to 40K, you are obligated to also learn a whole new system. And not a simple system, either. Virtually every part of GW's business model seems not only geared towards making you buy more plastic, but to take up more of your time and brain space to learn and keep up with it. Which has the cumulative effect of crowding out any other hobby you might have had in your life. With OPR, once you learn how the game works, you know how it works, and you can play it whenever you feel like. Even Age of Fantasy: Regiments, their rank-and-flank game, is functionally just Age of Fantasy but with simple rules for moving in blocks. It makes it easy to play. And isn't that just a royal indictment of GW games. They make it harder to play than it needs to be.

I first saw an OPR game in a hobby event back in Japan and a cool dude gave me an unpainted dynasty soldier mini. Thanks to this vid it reminded me about it and am gonna paint it soon!

My gaming group and I had started to not enjoy 40k and the games and get togethers had really dropped off. We tried OPR last month, and everyone is now enjoying the entire hobby again. We love this rule set, and I don’t see us going back to 40k rules anytime soon.

I just jumped into OPR and there is so much there. Quick, easily taught games for skirmish or army size and scifi and fantasy that are also mechanically the same so if you learn one game you can play the others. It's very cool and it's got me interested in army sized scifi games for the first time in a long time

Thank you. This has been a really good education, and I can see me exploring One Page Rules much more closely. This looks like a great alternative to GW rules, meaning I can start to think about reducing shelf space, by switching over to OPR.

I'm a $10 supporter and I HIGHLY recommend upping your level. You get 50+ minis a month and new armies every three or four months. I just got the War Demons and the Saurian Starhost. I am STOKED to continue to build warbands for Age of Fantasy Skirmish and now Grimdark Future Firefight.

I am new to the wargaming scene and earlier this month started to checkout 40k and the dark angels. Lore is awesome, figures are cool, the lion has returned, abilities are cool, and I have a 3d printer. Then I started to look at the rules and do more research into casual play beginner friendly play and I didnt really find it, but now im slowly thinking I will play some OPR with community supplements.

Minor correction; the gang wars Necromunda-type game is an add-on to GF Firefight, not a stand-alone game. It works just fine with every faction in GFF, not just the Gangers, so you can have a "gang war" between the not-tyranids and the not-necrons if you want.

OPR has amazing STLs in terms of quality and *quantity*. The amount of models you get each month is a steal compared to most other patreons (you get double the models basically). This past month they even included a new set of models; usually it is Lizard and Jackal/Gnoll models but this month they included demons which are great for Reign in Hell. Love their content. Highly recommend the rules and the models.

This was a far better explanation of the structure of OPR games (core rules, basic, advanced) than their website provides. Thank you!

One page rules is fantastic, and i'm so glad you did a video on it. Simplified rules make it a blast to play. I mainly paint, but it's nice to break out the terrain and have some quick battles form time to time. I'm a 5 dollar patreon and i couldnt be happier with the extra rules and builder they have available there. Highly recommend, it took 15 minutes to teach my friend. took longer to build my list than to learn the rules

I've been a fan of OPR since 2016. I have introduced multiple grown friends as well as my daughters and nephews to wargaming via these fun rules. I'm a big fan of the strategic gameplay that comes with the back and forth unit activation and how smooth and quick the game plays. Some times you just want to flop minis down on the table and roll some dice!

My kid likes heroquest, I haven't played a wargame since mid 90s warhammer fantasy (and have painted on and off since then).. printed the OPR a few months ago but didn't get around to looking at them. You sold me getting it out and working things through this weekend. Thanks

I have been trying to get into games with my 10 year old. Grimdark Future has been simple enough to play for both of us. And the low overhead is nice. I have been on their patreon before they had 3d models. It's one of the best patreons out there now in my opinion. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I started a very small local group playing OPR and finally having a laugh and a good time again wargaming. 40k gives me a massive headache, literally. We started with GDF and now play 300 pt Fire Fight games with three players at the same time. And we’re having a blast! Very good starting point to get into the hobby of wargaming. Thanks for the vid!

Worth mentioning that they have a rank and file version of fantasy just in case you want to dust off the old warhammer fantasy miniatures on the square bases. I really like the FTL space battle game though. Super excited for some changes that are coming down the line to expand it a bit.

OPR rocks. Warstuff is absolutely my low-rules gateway to getting my 7 year old into wargaming! When he is able, we'll move up to the full OPR rulesets, which are AWESOME. I have loved OPR nearly since they first existed, when units only had one Quality stat, no separate Defense at all. I'm speaking to the local wargaming group to play a Mordheim-style setting using the Age of fantasy skirmish, with the campaign add-on rules.

OPR made me love playing "40k" again. It distills all the fun of 40k without the bloat and waiting for my opponent to move, shoot and fight with their whole army before I get to do anything. GDF is wonderful.

What made me a fan of OPR is that it's miniatures agnostic and the army lists for Grimdark Future and GdF Firefight let me play my Star Wars Legions armies against 40K - Stormtroopers vs Orcs, Necrons or Eldar, or Rebel Alliance vs Tyranids, Death Korps, or Space Marines and have a really fun feeling game

My play group has been playing OPR for over a year now and we love it. It's simple, it's fun and you can go complete crazy with army designs (visually) because it doesn't have that tournament background. I play Firefight and painted up so many teams now with very different playstyles... I love it. We play regiments in 10mm ... cheap, fast and great fun to play!

Having been a 40k player for almost 25 years. (Collected smurfs,nids,SoB,orks,necrons and knights and a sizeable HH mechanicum army from FW! In that time) I got sick of the bloated requirement for buying new rulebooks,codexes,mission books ect.ect.ect for every edition every 3 years or so. on top of that the price gouging gw inflict on us. Especially for FW!! Ive recently d/l'd the grimdark future basic rules .. and their awesome.. defo joining the patreon once my new printer arrives.. and with the money imngonna save not buying gw products new anymore will go along way to buying the occasional figs i do want 2nd hand from ebay (because credit where it's due,they do make some fantastic sculpts!)And plenty of resin for all those sweet stl's sitting on my H.drive And given the absolute level if gaslighting from GW over their pandering to amazon.. not a moment to soon.. bye bye GW!! (P.s. the my minis factory are super cheap for ready printed models as well.. about 60£ for approx 34-38 model "starter" sets of figures from their "official" figures . That absolutely blows GW's prices out of the water! ) and every month theres a different starter set of stls to grab.. thats a great starter army every month for (including resin costs )for about 25£ !!!

Big supporter of OPR. Unlocked all my fantasy and 40k miniatures from the list building constraints and just allowed me to paint and field what I want. Oh and you forgot to mention that the games are MUCH shorter and that alternating activations really add balance. Just the fact that you don't have to hide all your minis at the beginning of the game for fear that your opponent can end the game T1 and shoot you off the board. SO much broken in the current 40k ruleset I could go on forever.

So awesome to see you going into depth on OPR! As someone with enough complexity in life, having a simple, non 'meta' system available for playing games is wonderful. I am now signed up on Patreon and have printed out 10mm versions to play on a kitchen table (convert inches to cm) - super easy to deploy and store. Would love to see a batrep!

Gw has made some awesome stuff in the past, but their chief and only concern right now is revenue. And how to keep a maximum amount of money coming in. in my two decades of gaming the best rules sets are made by smaller independent game makers that do not require you buy endless books and figures, nor do they constantly recalibrate the guts of the game (base sizes, troop formation, uber and unter units) to maximize sales. I found OPR because of this channel and finally had fun with my 40K armies that were sitting untouched in my basement for over a decade. Thanks for your great videos and insights TTM
