The tone is also different: they actually killed Merry! That instantly ups the stakes for the entire series. Pell isn't surviving the live action.

Among the actors, I think Emily Rudd deserves her flowers, she did a good job and really anchored the main cast and had good chemistry and rapport with everyone. Buggy's actor and Helmeppo's actor were both excellent and big surprises too. I think Arlong Park was not as well done as it could be, unfortunately. I feel like the inclusion and emphasis on Garp took a lot of time away from focusing the arc on Nami's past, as well as the villagers. I prefer the villagers knowing her plan, and Luffy not knowing her backstory etc. But overall, I had fun with it.
@Mike4pf
@Mike4pf 11 месяцев назад
Blankly staring in every scene and monotone deliveries outside of the few times where she does the bare minimum as a actor to communicate emotions and slightly changes her tone. Helmeppo peaked in his first scene at the bar(he's fine the rest of the season) where he's mean toward the little girl, like unironically that particular little bit is Anthony Starr/Bryan Cranston level acting where he just absolutely embodies the character, like he IS helmeppo in those like 10 seconds or whatever

i said the same thing cause that made the anime more emotional.. the whole live action was enjoyable but the anime kill it in emotional content. nami finding out her village knew all long and was pretending not to know so she wouldn't be burden with their hopes was powerful. then genzo rally the villegers for playing with nami feelings. they prepare to fight to the death cause now it clear no hope is left. and nami begging not to be hasty. she doesn't want anyone to die anymore. that whole scene so powerful. and nami breakdown cause she know the villagers will die. Emily was good but when nami was stabbing herself in the anime she look deranged.. i felt it more in the anime. just like i felt zoro declaration he make his name known to the heavens when he crying .. the only time we see him cry. as he declare he be the greatest swordsman.. these moments was done better in anime. sanji goodbye where he bow down to zeff and say i owe alot. but i enjoy the live action. alot of the comedy was missing also. luffy putting arlong teeth in his mouth..

@@blakex2699Obviously the anime is so much better when it comes to emotional moments and story beats. The disappointing thing is if the director and script let the actors do their jobs, they could replicate the anime emotion. Just look at Alice in Borderland s1 ep3 ending or Kenshin movies. Especially the one with Enishi. Like I am sorry Hollywood but I want my Robin shouting from her hearts out and bowling like a deranged girl "I want to live, take me to the sea!" Like we still have time to give those feedback to the Netflix team.

I just wish they would have taken like one minute extra to show Usopp's inner conflict during his fight with Chu. Like maybe after he tricks him with the ketchup trick and Chu walks off, Usopp tries to get away but then decides to engage Chu again. Similar to Zoro in Ep 1.

Could even have gone with something in the form of "What am I even doing here? I should go back to Syrup village... like the coward that I am [trembling face, close to tears] ... NO, I'm the great captain Usopp, and I will show that fish face!" showing some more genuine doubts and fears even if still not thinking about the crew. But inner monologues are always tough in western shows, so he would have to say that to Chu's face.

One potential benefit for having Koby, Helmeppo and Garp sharing screen time with the SHs, it will give Marineford even more weight since we have gotten to know them better than we had in the manga. If they continue to show them throughout, it'll make Garps struggle at Marineford even bigger. Mihawk and Garps interactions also helped explain Mihawks sandbagging in Marineford as well.

I watched this with my fiancee over three sittings (I do wish it had been released two episodes at a time, but I also admit we couldn't wait for Arlong Park after seeing Baratie). The moment I realized I'd really made her a convert was when she burst into tears watching Sanji say goodbye to Zeff. For every fault I found, I saw ten original things that delighted me, so I'm extremely happy with season one, and more than ready for the actors and writers to get their fair share so we can get to season two.

The one change that genuinely made me upset is the fact that NOBODY in Kokoyashi village realised that something was wrong with Nami's recruitment into Arlong pirates story. Basically, this small girl whose mom just got killed by pirates proceeds to join said pirates in a matter of like a day after they enslaved her and her entire village (and KILLED HER MOM). And yet these people who supposedly love and know this girl just accept that she's suddenly a manipulative sociopath who'll do whatever she wants. Like, the entire point of Nojiko's tattoos in the original was to make Nami feel better about being branded by Arlong. They kept the tattoos in the live action but here they are just tattoos I guess? Why even change that? Nojiko says at the end to Nami: "you will always have home to come back to". Well, unless she does one bad action one day, and god forbid she doesn't explain it to them or they will turn on her in an instant
@DatOnePieceFan

I agree but remember that Nami was in chains until she was 12. That’s 4 years! By then, I bet she came to the conclusion that if she shared what she was going through then the town would rebel and get wiped out. That’s why she probably played it off
@iamdivan7368
@iamdivan7368 11 месяцев назад
@@DatOnePieceFan i think you are right, I forgot about the chains. But also in the original she only ever told Nojiko, and the rest of the village caught on on their own. It was very nice bit of emotional intelligence, where the people of the village loved her and wanted the best for her, so they pretended to hate her in order to make it easier for her to abandon them if one day she finds happiness outside the village. Here they literally go "we hated you for the last 10 years but this girl just told us a nice story about you and now we like you again". In the grand scheme of things it's not important, but I feel like in the original I understood the bond Nami had with these people and why she was willing to die for them. Meanwhile here they are just some guys who lived nearby for a bit when she was a child

They majorly fked up Nami's character. They didn't understand her at all. They ruined everything relating to her plot line. @@iamdivan7368 I think that plot point is important because those stories are a major part of Oda's writing style. Your point on the dialogue is actually my main complaint and specifically with Luffy. It felt like the writers were afraid to let Luffy's characterization be too subtle. A lot of things get spelled out way too much with him. Like in the manga Luffy's response to Arlong saying he uses Nami conveys the same thing without being so on the nose. It's clear they genuinely understand Luffy but it felt like they were afraid the audience wouldn't.

@@Animely0 I do feel that Loguetown would of been a very weird place to end season 1. If only because in a show where we go by seasons, instead of the manga/anime which are week to week, Loguetown would of been a big step down from the climax of Arlong Park. I think Logue Town would make a great kickoff for season 2. I think they could get through alabasta in probably 10 episodes, 8 would mean they realistically only get 3 episodes for Alabasta. I would say 4-5 episodes is a safe bet for Alabasta since fights chapters tend to be faster paced compared to other chapters.

I really enjoyed the show, but as a OP fan I will add two other changes which just did not sit well with me. First was like with Usopp, the Sanji recruitment was lacking a lot and I wish Sanji was at least present to see Zoro vs Mihawk. It felt Sanji just joined too easily. Also, I really did not like the change to Nami's relationship with Nojiko and Genzo. There wasn't any real need to change that. At best it added nothing extra of value and for me it took away meaning behind Nami's tattoo and from the help me scene as well.

@woodhawk109
@woodhawk109 11 месяцев назад
I think their reasoning to the change of Coco village story is to avoid the weird implication that the village just let a 10? yrs old girl essentially be sold into slavery in the hope that she, one day can buy their freedom back. If you view the actions of the villager that way, it might come a cross as somewhat problematic in hindsight. However, I think a quick rewrite in the LA can fix both issues, by revealing that the villagers did not discover Nami's plan until about a year before the show happened. That absolved them of the weird "whole village of adult depended on a little girl selling herself into slavery to save themselves" and still hit all the emotional beats of the manga

I disagree that cutting the Krieg storyline from Baratie was a good choice. I understand it was for consolidation for an 8 episode season, but the Krieg conflict is necessary because it gives Sanji and Zeff a reason to like Luffy. As it stands in the Netflix adaptation, it does not really make a whole lot of sense why Sanji is quick to join Luffy and why Luffy reminds Zeff of Gold Roger when the only thing that happened was Luffy gets beaten up in a one-sided fight against Arlong. And Luffy's debt to the Baratie seemingly gets forgotten.

Zoro still gets his duel, Mihawk is impressed by Luffy as an upstart pirate for defeating one of the major pirates in the East Blue, Zeff calls off Luffy's debt for saving the Baratie and Sanji is inspired to pursue his dreams again after witnessing Luffy's and Zoro's convictions. I understand that Krieg may not be an important character to the overarching narrative, and the fact it wouldn't have fit in a condensed 8 episode season, but the conflict he brings to the Baratie arc serves a particular purpose of furthering character motivations. The live action adaptation would have benefited from a 10 episode season.

My least favorite change was rewritting Nami's backstory, the impact is suppose to be that the villagers were carrying the weight of her secret with her the entire time. Instead we got that they think she actually betrayed them. It made for her connection with Cocoashi Village non-existent. I felt nothing for the villagers or Nojiko, they just happened to be Nami's past and not an integral part of the arc.
@keeleysexton
@keeleysexton 11 месяцев назад
That’s one way to see to but i disagree. I think knowing that she was working to free them while they hated her for all those years made me empathise with her and how lonely she must have felt even more. It also showed Nani’s inner strength and resolve, like her fight was that much harder because she was truly alone. I think they just needed to do something to give the scene where the village all realised and decided to fight for her more oomph. A better apology to nami. But I think the overall change was actually pretty good and fit the streamlining of the narrative pretty well.
@magacofi
@magacofi 11 месяцев назад
@@keeleysexton Actually, the change wasn't needed for what you're saying. Nami told Nojiko, so you could argue that's one person who knows ergo she's not lonely in her struggle anymore. But that's not the case. Yes, she might have someone who can emphatise with her, but Nojiko can't help her collect the hundred million because the people can't leave the island. It makes her knowing a bittersweet comfort for Nami. The hate from the villagers? It was already there in the original story. Since they pretended to hate her and still alienated her to try and not give her more weight on her shoulders, she DID think she was hated. And that adds a _lot_ to her breakdown, since she's on this frantic train of thought of "Don't you worry! I'll do this, I just have to start again, I've got this-!" And Genzo cuts her off saying that they won't let her do this to herself any longer. That they were sitting back out of respect for her resolve but that it was too late to keep doing that. So, while I'd say they did a great job with the time they had, and my best friend actually enjoyed the heck out of the show (as a non OP fan) so I'm alright with how they presented things... I just think it's fundamentally wrong to say this particular change doesn't affect the impact. I like that you say they could've sold the reveal a bit more, I do agree that would've made the change more acceptable. But, I think it felt too sudden, and that they didn't have enough time to process things to make their change of heart believable with what we got.

I fully agree that the Garp/Coby storyline added nothing to Luffy's character and completely negates the build up of tension over the pursuit of him. But I think it served a lot of use for Garp and Coby's characters in themselves and where they fit in to the broader story. The actors are just so good that they may well have been given a bigger slice of screen time in order to capitalize on their talent. It was also a neat way of introducing the Navy and their relationship to the Warlords rather than trying to tell it through the manga's endless Naval characters that come and go. Also, the scene with Zeph and Garp was another nice way of hammering in the idea of the new age of pirates. Everything in their dialogue fit the world neatly.

I think having "Garp" and Coby around kinda takes away from the idea that the Navy isn't the over all good force in the world. as you watch OP you learn that the Navy is actually very corrupt and doesn't help the people. Coby wants to help people, so it makes sense when later in the anime we learn that he is working with Saber. The way the Navy is portrayed in the LA just erases all of the negative. It shows that Garp is apparently the one to take down Morgan, not Luffy. It sends a totally different message.

The Garp storyline was more for Coby's character development than for Luffy's. They devised a smart way to tie Coby and Luffy together rather than ignoring what happens to Coby in the early arcs like Oda did in the manga.
@SXJAYSX

Agreed it was less about Garp and his relation to Luffy and more about Coby and his development from Luffy's friend to adversary. Something the manga definitely completely glosses over. And Luffy and Cody's friendship felt way more real in the live action. Which will make the stakes higher later on. When Coby opposed Luffy at Marine Fort later I literally felt two shits couse their relationship, and Coby's arc has not been covered at all.

In an interview they said the main thing they were trying to add to the story by adding the Garp sub-plot is a sense of urgency for the strawhats. That they are being pursued and can't really take things at their own pace. Also, Oda did not ignore it. It's a cover story that starts during Arlong Park and ends in Little Garden. I'm hopeful for more Sanji and Usopp moments in season 2. There seemed to be a bigger focus on the OG trio which kind of makes sense given their arcs in the show. I feel in season 2 Sanji and Usopp will get their chances to shine unlike season 1, giving them more focus. This could be done through Sanji's "Mr Prince" gimmick and my all-time favourite scene of Usopp standing for Luffy's dream during the Alabasta War, alongside the Little Garden stuff- they could also use Daddy Masterson for him too, especially since he doesn't have his iconic goggles in the show yet. To me we didn't get enough of Sanji and his dynamic with the crew because he joined so late, and not enough Usopp moments. But I am hopeful we will, if we get a season 2.

I agree, the Garp reveal as Luffy’s grandpa should have been revealed at episode 8, and cut out most of Garp and Koby interactions in discussing about Luffy. Garp was great as a mentor for Koby and Helmeppo and as a “good marine” that Koby aspired to be, but when it was revealed that Garp was the grandpa, the weight did fall. Instead, when Garp’s ship was chasing Luffy’s, that ship should have completely overwhelmed the Straw Hats to the point where Luffy couldn’t have registered that it was Garp and was too focused on the barrage of cannonballs. Garp laughing would have been questionable, but intriguing at that time then. And of course the harder Garp pushes Luffy, the closer it is to the source material, because Garp is the kind of guy who does not hold back. Everything should have been all or nothing for him. He should have been a looming force of nature that was built up to be a strong threat. Then the “testing” thing could have made a bit more since, since it wouldn’t have been too wishy washy

I thought it was an honourable thing for Mihawk to even have to use Yoru to fight someone as we saw with Zoro, yet he mindlessly slashes every fodder pirate in the way up until Don Krieg. And because of Don Krieg dying so early, we didn't get the proper Gin story line with Sanji being the chef that Luffy wanted. This is probably the best objective analisis I have seen on any video so far. As a fan i must say I enjoyed most of the scenes, especially the Garp - Zeff and the Mihawk - Shanks & Red Haired scenes, in my opinion the ladder is heavily underrated, this interactions with "old timers" gives us a new but enjoyable way to deepen this characters but also in the eyes of a non fan, we get this perspective of depth and "elderly" power to them, we know Mihawk can slice a FREAKING BOAT in Half, WITH LIKE AIR OR SOMETHING (No seriously, i watched this with my Girlfriend she does not watch anime, and she was terrified and speechless, in a good way) Shanks did this hypnotize thing to a freaking Sea MONSTER, we had seen by that point Garp just yeet a fucking cannonball like its a baseball (and the final fight with luffy where he utterly destroyed him effortlessly). The Garp and Zeff scene where Garp remarks the "terrifying red boot Zeff" is awesome, makes us wonder how awesome this man is, and again as a One Piece fan, I LOVE THIS SHOW, Its not perfect and to me the Luffy lines where the most "weird" thing to digest but as you said, Objectively speaking, this was amazingly done and produced, and to me it is also a NEW One Piece that i very much wish to keep following, hopefully a long time, yall give your love to the Cast, they did a great thing here!

I disagree that most of the changes improved the story. As much as people love to hate on Don Krieg, replacing his role as Baratie’s villain with Arlong completely undermined a crucial character moment for Sanji. That being when he feeds the survivors of Don Krieg’s armada. In the show it was just one survivor who was no threat, while in the manga/anime it was an entire battalion who was a rather large threat. Sanji choosing to feed them anyways actually had consequences since he was doing so even knowing they could prove a danger to the Baratie. Without that aspect in the show, Luffy admiring Sanji and wanting him to join his crew doesn’t have any real substance since Sanji wasn’t risking anything by choosing to feed them. This is a problem with a lot of the show. In trying to tie together the entire East Blue Saga instead of treating it like a disconnected series of events, the show often cuts out important characterization and set up in the interest of trying to make everything interconnected. Beyond the Sanji and Don Krieg example, the show also failed by not including Chouchou. Completely skipping over Luffy and Nami coming to an understanding about what “treasure” really means which thereby undercuts the moment when Luffy puts his hat on her. Trusting her with his “treasure” in the same was she’s trusting him with hers. But without the Chouchou conflict being included in the show, the placing the hat on her head moment isn’t as meaningful. All in all, trading in proper set up and characterization to tighten up the plot so that main stream audiences don’t get bored is a cheap and hollow. While I can understand where the show is coming from in trying to do this, they went too far and cut out too much. Had they had like two more episodes they could have tightened things up without removing the spirit underlying all the powerful payoffs.

I would also add the Usopp's pirates, Gaimon's island and the lack of Nami's village nuance to the things they cut that, even if not completely necessary, were incredibly important to the original story nuance and hearth. I agree with your points 100%, this season needed A LOT less Garp, we really only needed the scenes with Koby and Helmeppo. Garp letting Luffy escape by the end is basically nepotism, if it was literally any other strong marine the story would've ended there but Luffy gets a pass because it's his grandfather. Now, someone might say this happens in Water 7 too but... not really, since Garp immediately changes his mind in Water 7 and tries to sink Luffy's ship and then we get the feel-good end to the arc with the Sunny flying away and thus making Luffy's escape actually earned instead of nepotism. Without Garp's storyline taking so much screen time we could've gotten more time for certain parts that felt too rushed. I'm glad a probable season 2 won't have the issue of making up problematic storylines like Garp's to cut away to, since the plot will naturally be more dense with the addition of the Baroque Works and Smoker. I really only disagree with your evaluation of Sanji. He is often one of the happy goofy characters too, just maybe not in the Baratie arc (where he really only smiles and opens up by the end when he talks about All Blue with Luffy). But honestly? I felt like Taz Skylar's Sanji was the most well adapted character of the main 5 and he managed to nail the womanizer aspect that people were really worried about. The scene where he treats the guys rudely while offering many options for Nami's glass of water is possibly one of my favorites.

That’s strong, visual storytelling that shows, not tells, Luffy’s character - his priority is to keep a promise, cherish his mentor, and to have gratitude for what he was already given. Buggy is also shown to be something of a power and fame obsessed for reasons of insecurity whackado but that was already established. It helped serve as a contrast to Luffy beyond him.

@@_eRuDiT0_ Not gonna lie that made me laugh out lout. Imo some characters from the manga/anime were actually better in the live action like Helmeppo, Kuro, Koby, Buggy. The pacing is way too fast especially in the second half(Baratie and Arlong Park) and also the acting wasn't the best so the peaks felt either unearned or badly acted. But at least the show feels like one piece and if that makes people start reading the manga I'm all for it.

@@geogeo3733 The characters were not better at all. Only helmeppo was better than the manga counterpart. The rest were no better at all. None of these guys can act at all and everything felt like a cliche Disney movie. I understand you want to like this show, I did too, but there's way too many faults. If this show wasn't one piece and didn't have the prenotions of characters that you love, nobody would watch it and nearly everyone would call it cringe. Can you elaborate as to how any of these characters beside helmeppo and buggy is better than their manga/Anime counterpart. That statement you said is so blasphemous that it's borderline insane to say it. It's like taboo. To reiterate the biggest downfall of this is garo and koby. The additions of buggy were good cause it was faithful to the manga and Anime. Garp is the worst live action character in any show ever. He's practically a Disney villain with ZERO purpose and with zero reasons to even be there. Luffy doesn't even have a bounty. And the acting of the show felt so half-hazard.
@geogeo3733
@geogeo3733 11 месяцев назад
@@_eRuDiT0_ We can both agree on Helmeppo, he was a great actor. Kuro(also Sham and Buchi) and Buggy were just way more fun to see on the screen than in the manga so that elevated the Orange town and Syrup village arcs which were pretty meh in the original story anyway(even though Usopp didn't get a triumphant moment in the live action in his own arc). Koby is just less annoying. All the strawhats are great. They captured the one piece feeling which was the most important part. So yeah overall I enjoyed the first half more than in the manga because I didn't have any expectations for it. I agree with the Garp stuff, its pretty bad, but it doesn't make the whole show unwatchable. The second half though is way better in the manga because of the breakneck pacing and not that great acting. Something they really messed up was not having Sanji see Zoro's fight with Mihawk which was a huge moment for him. Also Sanji's farewell could be better. Zoro's declaration to become the world's greatest swordsman wasn't that good because of the stiff acting. Felt the same way about Nami's "Help me" scene although it was better than Zoro's scene at least. Mihawk and Arlong were pretty good though. The jokes were great and not corny usually. Also, the fighting scenes were way better than I expected. In conclusion, the manga for east blue was like a 7-10 and the Live action was a constant 7.5-8/10. It was more than enough for any non manga readers to get interested in the world and characters and want to start reading the source material. So that's a win in my book. Also, who knows, maybe they will learn something from their fails in season 1 and make season 2 even better although I am scared that they will have to cut even more content since the Alabasta saga is so huge.
@_eRuDiT0_
@_eRuDiT0_ 11 месяцев назад
@@geogeo3733 Maybe they will learn something from their faults, and improve upon it. However, I really doubt thats the case, with Netflix's track record, Steve Maeda is also notorious to never ever complete a show, and all of the stuff he has worked on always has gotten cancelled. Not to say they can't improve. But the budget expense would be way too high down the line. And thus, I can't see it going past 2 seasons. All the actors would get too old by the time they get to enies lobby and stuff and they'd have to change actors. I respect your opinion, however you cannot deny that syrup village was butchered. Usopp had far too less screen time, which didn't hit the beat when usopp was called a liar by the village when he tried to warn them about kuro. And luffy had no screen time in that episode cause he was sick. Koby had way too much presence in that episode even compared to usopp, when it should have been an episode to flesh out the character.

Great stuff sir. However I'm surprised i haven't seen you or anyone hit Baratie's changes harder, specifically Mihawk's intro and interactions with the SHs. I really think skipping the Krieg fight hurt the story overall--Krieg himself isn't important, but the reactions of Sanji and Zeff to Luffy and Zoro's relentless nature, the importance of WITNESSES seeing Luffy and Zoro being great and almost superhuman in their resolve, the intensity of the moment where Baratie is under attack, Mihawk shows up and wrecks Zoro, Nami steals the Merry...all that happens within basically no time, resulting imo in a much more intense and narratively rich situation that accomplishes sooo many things, and imo the LA just glossed over all that. What's so special about Luffy in the LA that Sanji is willing to join him after years of not leaving Zeff? What's so special about Luffy in the LA that Mihawk decides not to bring him to Garp? Why does Zoro wake up and vow to stay with Luffy? Because he let him duel Mihawk? But he could've done that without Luffy. I also missed having the audience of the villagers of Cocoyashi witnessing the fall of Arlong Park. Oda has citizen witnesses to almost every major battle for a reason. Luffy is freeing them as he frees himself and his friends, and this is how his legend grows.... not trying to sound overly negative here, overall i still loved it and am so grateful opla exists .

*I'd give it a solid 7/10 (for context The Dark Knight would be a 9), but there are some things I think the team can improve on for Season 2:* -->1. More emotional impact in the fights (and smoother fight choreography-->black cat pirates wtf was that) FOR EXAMPLE... In the map room scene where Luffy is fighting Arlong there could've been more emphasis on the pain/memories that Nami experienced being forced to draw for Arlong. It makes it feel like the focus of Luffy destroying Arlong Park was for the sake of physically defeating Arlong ("maybe I can't beat you, but I can destroy everything you've built"), versus focusing on the suffering of Nami in that room, or in other words seeing the maps and chain and then destroying the room as portrayed in the Manga. It's a subtle, but huge difference because it shifts the emphasis to freeing Nami from her past traumas by destroying the room vs just besting Arlong. -->2. The use of silence and sub-text Maybe this is just a nitpick from me, but I HATE IT when characters state things like "so you were sacrificing/doing it for us all along" 😯😯😯 Yes, we ALL know that already, you don't need to say it again. Some form of acknowledgement is needed, but it doesn't need to be this obvious. More time could also be given for silence in scenes to fully bring out the emotional tension ex. the bellamere scene, and the part where Luffy comes out from the rubble after destroying Arlong park. -->3. More stylized color-grading, aka not just marvel color tones. I'd love to see something more like Wes Anderson and Hero (Movie). One more nit pick - although the live version wasn't bad, I prefer Sanji's goodbye to Zeff MILES better in the Manga. It felt a little rushed in the live, and I wished they would give more time for things to flesh out (but I get it, they have to squish everything into 8 episodes), as well as them changing the dialogue - the original hits way harder, fight me 👊 They also don't need the constant BG music, this isn't family guy+subway surfers on tiktok - give scenes the silence they need to create more tension. But even with all that said, cutting/rearrangement of the plot worked out really well, and I still really enjoyed the adaptation. Matt did a great job 👍👍

Sanji and Usopp felt like side characters and i did not like that. - Gin scene ,Luffy asking Sanji to join etc - Very little screen time , him joining didn't even feel like a big moment. - Nami , Zoro get better moments even in his "arc" - Feels like a side character to 3 main one in Luffy/Zoro/nami. - There was no real motivation for Sanji to join the crew , he just did and felt like he did it because of a tanturm.

People often forget that you have to greatly turn down the attachment to the original manga in a lot of respects and remember that it's going to be it's own translation of the source material. Plus Oda himself oversaw and approved every single change that was made. There will never be a perfect adaptation of anything, but from what I saw, I give the show an easy 9/10. I don’t think luffy earns the same respect through action he does in the anime manga that makes his crew trust him, we don’t get the same emotion from Nami watching him destroy her room throwing it out the window as a symbol of her slavery, he says he can’t beat Arlong to Arlong which is way off, it’s not a better plot the drop the ball on the short stories all representing “what is your treasure” Chu Chu was not a throw away story it was a very purposeful story to represent treasure is unique to each person, they didn’t define how important Luffys hat is, jango isn’t around and usopp doesn’t do the same intensity that earns the crews respect, the marine storyline doesn’t add to it ruins a good late surprise and takes up time that could have been spent on other things and it does not build the same intensity to “the walk” at Arlong park which is one of two shots in that arc that sold me on the series and not including hachi takes away from the story and Zoro is so much less fun. Usopp is far less likable than in the manga.

Saying I don't wanna hear complains about skipping Krieg, completely misses how much of an eye opening experience the fight was for Sanji. Together with Zoro vs Mihawk, Luffy vs Arlong was what made Sanji realise he can too follow his dream, and be relentless about it, just like them. It also completely undermines Luffy saving Baratie, since Arlong just left. But more importantly, Sanji feeding even his enemies is completely gone. Same problems with Ussop's moements in his village. He fought against pirates to make the village have another boring day. He didn't care about the villagers finding out that he wasn't lying this time that pirates are coming. He was ok with defeating them and the villagers thinking it was just another lie. He wanted no glory, no way out of his lies, just to protect. Huge Ussop moments just competely missed. Also, the villagers actually liking Ussop was a nice touch that was again gone for no reason. Kuro's plan was also stupid in live action (no covering the murder with a pirate raid, just murder Kaya when she turns 18, nobody will question it right...?) With Nami, the changes to the villagers was again bad. Why not make them know about her sacrifice all these years? Actually hating her makes them all look like dumbasses. Hachi is very obviously missing because he would need CGI and money. Finallly, the real reason for the Garp storyline is to revisit old sets. They spent most of the money there, so they had to have somebody return there to shot a few more stuff there for "free". It was budget.

my main problem with the series wasn't major, but it really affected my perception of the straw hats through the lense of live-action, and action in general. In the manga, luffy is very clearly powerful. He's introduced as a young adult by beating the sea king, then he immediately is able to dispatch alvida with no trouble. subsequently he completely obliterates large groups of enemies, the black cat crew for example. I understand that in a live-action setting it's harder to translate massive scale battles like that, but the thing that bothered me the most was his ability in contrast to nami. Nami isn't an extremely weak character in the manga, but she definitely perceives herself as one, which is a large part of her character and dynamic with the other straw hats. In ep1 she is immediately established as a competent combatant in the battle against the marines, I would argue that she's actually on a similar level to luffy at that point. There's also a large power imbalance between luffy and zoro initially portrayed. In the manga, both are massive powerhouses with similar combat styles with strength taking priority. Both are shown to have mastery over their style, but ultimately luffy is evidently a little bit stronger just because his lack of reliance on tools. In the show, zoro initially seems leagues above luffy in terms of ability and discipline shown by his introduction with mr. 7, the bar fight, and ultimately the brawl with the marines.This is rectified somewhat by luffy's battle with arlong, but the shift between him having trouble with a small group of marines and him literally kicking through a several story high building vertically throws off his consistency. ultimately i think the show was good from a critical perspective, and although i did appreciate the consistency with the story of the manga, I feel like the trend of anime not being well translated to live-action stays consistant with this. I did immensely enjoy it though and am looking forward to s2.

Nami was just worried about her village and trying to save it while Robin was worried about the crew and was willing to sacrifice her own life to try and keep them safe. It’s so much deeper than just simply saying they both left the crew and needed to be saved. Arlong wasn’t going to kill Nami he needed her and stealing from the initial scare that CP9 showed the readers and viewers either tells me that they don’t plan on going that far or it will cheapen their story arc whenever they are introduced. Nami and robin’s situation’s are nothing alike and if it’s that simple then every crew members joining for the most part is the exact same and that’s just not true

Fantastic analysis all around. Something that I've heard but might not be confirmed is that the B plot line with Garp makes a lot of sense for budget reasons : ie it's very cost efficient to show Marines talking and re-using the sets of the Strawhats; so that's a reason why they gave it so much screen-time. I think it was a good change overall, but they could have executed it a little bit better by having more variety, ie show the marines with more action: training, arresting pirates ... That being said I don't think fans would have an issue with it if we had gotten 20min ish more screentime for Usopp/Sanji/Arlong Park who get the short-end of the stick screen-time wise (compared to the manga).

I love the aspect that they did with Episode 6. Like you said, it really mirrored Robin and I definitely felt Water 7 vibes there and I loved it. Water 7 and Enies Lobby are my favorite arcs ever, so I loved it. Although I disagree with the Garp stuff. I feel like it ignores a lot of Garp here and what it represents for multiple characters since we get more stuff with Helmeppo and Coby and really shows us more to Garp, Coby and Helmeppo. It also shows off just how powerful Garp is and that Luffy still has SOO much growth to be doing. But I do like Morj's review/analysis on a developmental and formulaic way. Because he's right. There is a very basic formula being used. 16:10 oof! Yeah, gotta agree there. That IS in fact NOT valid criticism. This is a very good objective analysis and I agree with mostly everything here. Especially on the scene direction bit. You even convinced me on the plot changes as a whole being improvements. But what I strongly disagree with though is the neutral take on Usopp's role in episode's 3 and 4. You compared it to other live actions having characters not as developed in their respective first season but this is different, because Usopp meets the team then merits joining the team. As opposed to a show like Breaking Bad where a character like Skyler or Marie in the first season aren't very developed but are already familiar with the main characters. Skyler and Marie are married to Walter and Hank by episode one so its ok for them not to have development early on. However Jesse becomes a main character halfway through the first episode because he has a believable reason to partner up with Walter White Usopp on the other hand, as handled in the live action contributes 0 reason on why Luffy should bring him on the team, even from a neutral perspective as someone who doesn't know anything about Usopp or One Piece. From a basic story telling perspective, Usopp should have at least helped Luffy defeat Kuro in some sense. Removing Django in turn, removed a lot of Usopp's agency as a character. And to cement this point further, I watched this with a handful of people who do not read or watch One Piece and they thought episodes 3 and 4 were awful and felt that Usopp had as much reason to join the strawhats as Kaya because he didn’t do anything compared to Zoro and Nami. With that being said, another great analysis as always, Morj! I did enjoy the show. I dunno if I'll binge it again if not for revisiting actions scenes. But Im happy to say this is a great adaption save for the minor things that bother me a lot. Season 2 should undoubtedly be better.
