Fun fact: Oda never reuses the existing panels for flashback scenes. He draws all the flashback scenes all over again. He clarified why he does that. "The customer is paying for a volume of his drawings to see fresh drawings, reusing panels would make it look like I'm ripping them off." The man is a gem.
to be fair, i woudln't care if it meant making the next chapter faster or longer, the same way most anime reuse drawings in the penultimate episode flashbacks to make the final episode better, but another reason to redraw is that he got better along the way, and suddenly mixing old drawings with new drawings would look weird
Merphy: "I don't really understand why so many people are draw to take Luffy's side." Also Merphy: "I love Luffy ... SO MUCH!" Such a mysterious power this man have!
A bit late I know but what I always loved about Luffy's reaction to Ace's death is it subverts a troupe that is very common in Manga and Anime where typically this leads to the character snapping into a fit of ultimate rage (the iconic moment when Goku goes Super Saiyan for example), Luffy however...it breaks him, there is no "how dare you! I will make you suffer!" He reacts how a normal person probably would and mentally shuts down
@@B1ackKingStar For real. He was running on fumes and literal steroids, fighting and running around non-stop and literally fighting for his life against poison for like a day and a half, and then Ace died on his arms. His incredible willpower, which is what kept him going for so long, completely shattered, and he was just out.
Now that Haki has been explained, I think it's worth clarifying that Hawkeye's comment during Marineford about Luffy's ability to draw people to him is not Haki-related. While the Color of the Supreme King Haki is extremely rare and does imply a greater destiny, Hawkeye is simply talking about who Luffy is as a person. He is just someone who is able to get virtually everyone to like him and help him out (such as that ragtag group from Impel Down), and that in itself is a powerful ability. Which is just awesome and a huge part of the reason why we love our boy so much lol.
Conqueror's Haki does bare significance in Luffy's ability to draw people near him and make them believe in his goals/help him, since that specific Haki implies that the person in question has "the qualities of a King", or leader if you will. That's why is so rare and you can't train to have it, just develop it if you were born with it.
@@soulscribe_h I think this is a Correlation doesn't equal Causation situation. He has conquerors haki because of his ambition and heritage, and he makes people allies, because he's working toward his dream and is infinitely positive. Maybe.
@@PichNuts yeah but that doesn't change the fact that you have to be born with it. I think Luffy's willpower, ambition and overall personality is fuel for his conqueror's haki and not the other way around.
Im happy Merphy read this comment cuz that theory of hers could have led to a log of misunderstanding later hahaha It did make sense with the knowledge she had at the time tho
One little detail Oda hid in this saga that both blew my mind and broke my heart was how specifically Ace's death played out. First for clarification the three admirals here are primarily addressed by nicknames which are a neat tie in to the Japanese momotaro story but not my main focus here. Stupid lava man aka Akainu's real name is Sakazuki, and he was introduced in a flashback much earlier in the story (keep an eye out on your reread you'll hate him even more). What makes this heart wrenching is that sakazuki is also the name both for the cups Luffy Ace and Sabo drank from to declare their brotherhood and the name of a ritual with these same cups used to swear loyalty to another. Oda literally throws it in our face that Ace was killed by his loyalty and devotion to others, first by falling to Akainu's goading of his father figure in Whitebeard and then by sacrificing himself for his sworn brother in Luffy
Shanks' line at the funeral to Luffy gets me every time. "Listen Luffy, it is by experiencing both victory and defeat, by running away and shedding tears that a man becomes a man. It's alright to cry."
Oda likes to portrait many aspects of masculinity through different characters like that. Whether is Sanji's chivalry, Zoro's stoicism, Senor Pink's high levels of testosterone and so on.
To add about Sabo's foreshadowing: - Enies Lobby: When Robin and Spandam try to explain in the rooftop scene what the World Government flag means, Luffy, the same guy that doesn't understand simple structures like Baroque Works, says "I know very well what Robin's enemy is". They already took a brother from him. - Alabasta: Ace's tattoo has the S crossed out in his arm. - From the very start in the manga, the first time that the "Vow of brotherhood" was shown as a tease of a flashback, there was the shadow of a third cup. The theory of a third brother/sister existed since that moment.
@@sheepboy2560 There is a drawing by Oda of the three that shows a what if Sabo didn't die. Ace's tattoo doesn't have the S. Also it's not meant to be a crossed out S. It's Sabo's pirate flag
Thats not confirmed yet, only that he is Luffys dad. We still know very little about the monkey family. Edit: people think just because dragon has the name "monkey" that he is related to garp, this is not confirmed, read the manga, a low ranking marine is asking this question "so is dragon garps son?!" But with no answer. Dragon could easily have taking the monkey name when he married/met Luffys mom... Like i said, we know very little about the monkey family, and we know nothing of the relation between garp and dragon. Remember when we all thought that dragon also was aces father, because we where told luffy and ace where brothers... We dont have enough to directly confirm anything, except that luffy is grandson of garp, and son of dragon, we have nothing on how garp and dragon is related.
@@WichDK try to reread Water Seven. Garp is the grandfather that *maybe* married a noble woman from Goa. Therefore Luffy had noble blood from his grandmother.
The difference with Moria is that Luffy killing him makes the system look unreliable. While Moria dying in a war against the strongest man in the world wouldn't make the system look bad, everyone would understand.
Dadan beating up Garp was also one of my favorite scenes. After the war Garp goes back to Fuschia village only to face Dadan. And she beats him up cause as she sees it, he didnt do anything to save Ace, the child he brought home to her to raise. But also Garp let her beat him because he feels guilt for not being able to do anything and feeling like he deserves this punishment, especially from the woman who raised Ace and Luffy.
Yep it also never fails to make him cry and that garp really hates himself and knews he was wrong and helped kill ace. Dadan is the best. Especially the you idiot, i am not the one needing help and am the most in pain its luffy.
Not only did Garp think he deserve Dadan's beating, he also thought that he need it. He need someone to beat the shit out of him, to scold him, and to told him that it's his fault, because it would keep him sane. We can debate whether Garp is right or wrong, but there're times when we think that we just did something horrible that being unpunished makes us mad. That's what Garp feels at that moment
That scene in particular makes me tear up the most. Like it’s such a good scene because it does “show don’t tell” so amazingly. It doesn’t need to have Garp monologue that he blames himself for us to understand the turmoil he’s in. We can naturally understand the inner thoughts of these characters and that makes it all the more emotional.
Another aspect I love about that sequence is that Dadan was always terrified of Garp. For at least years he would strongarm her into doing whatever he wanted using his strength and position. But in this moment amidst her rage and grief she gave absolutely zero F**ks and let him have it.
fun fact: aside from the tattoo, Sabo's existence was subtly hinted at in another way - in ch 558 page 11, Ace has a flashback panel to the time they shared sake cups if you look closely at the left side of the panel, you can see the edge of a third sake cup 🤯
Sabo signs his letter to Ace and Luffy with an S and an X through it. This is referenced in Ace’s tattoo where it originally looks like he spelled his name incorrectly but really used it to remember his friend.
You missed something during Thriller Bark. Kuma says towards the end of the arc, "To inspire such loyalty in his friends, he couldnt be anyones son but yours Dragon."
The reason Garp had given off Ace & Luffy to Dadan is because they were both children of Roger & Dragon. So he has to hide them somewhere where people won't know that and visits them rarely because he doesn't want anyone to make their connection to himself. Also, this is the mid-point, so do take a break. Everyone takes a break at this point, including the author himself.
I recommend the “I still have my crew” scene in the anime, the music was beautiful and Japanese voice actor killed it, the desperation in her voice is palpable
i kinda wish luffy changed slightly which he does in moments after that moment but its nothing long lasting..i kinda wanted him to be different post timeskip as a captain and more serious cool and mature...he still acts 17
Basically every single great scene in the manga is double great in the anime So you could say that about any good scene of one piece . Sometimes the anime even does these amazing slow pace scenes that combined with music brings amazing scenes
Just wanted to note that Imo Sabo's "death" is still emotional even though its obvious for the reader that he likely survived. From Ace and Luffy's perspective they have no reason at all to assume he survived and to them he's dead. Especially when talking about kids, it doesn't really matter what actually happened, what matters is what they think happened. If learning an event that they thought happened didn't happen years later it doesn't erase the trauma of it.
Most new readers dont quickly realise how broken Brooke really is, a man who lived alone for 50 years in despair, it's actually shocking for him to be sane right now! His deeply broken mental status is always overshadowed by his perversion and skull jokes. That's why I love seeing Brooke in the limelight!
true to one piece fan form merphy forgets that garp is dragons dad in the same video that she mentions that dragon is garp son and made a complex theory of how dragon had noble parents to relate dragon with sabo situation. Welcome to the one piece fandom alum
@@deepEleven you really think GARP would marry a woman so noble that you could open their mouth and see the stick shoved up her ass, to the point where Dragon would be able to relate with Sabo? Cause Sabo's parents were assholes
@@thexenosaiyan I have a theory that Luffy's mom being a celestial Dragon. Dragon was just a nobody who the woman fell in love with. She got discriminated, kicked out and killed which is why Dragon started the revolutionary army and Garp (being the Navy Hero at that point) never accepted the admiral position out of spite for the world government. spoilers: she got kinda the same reaction as Doffy's family, but instead of the "commoners" it was the nobles. I'm excited to see if my theory turns out true or not, but probably not :D
Oh yeah a neat little thing when the Straw Hats are reading about Luffy's second trip to Marineford and figuring out his message. Vivi was also catching on to there being some reason to the marks on his arm. The only reason she didn't get the message is because she didn't know of their agreement to meet in three days! Shows just how well she had connected with the crew during her time with them.
I mean, anyone who's seen them in the last month should know that the marks are new and probably mean something. I think most people probably just don't really care.
The thing to realize about Garp is he's a military man. It would be almost impossible to raise one child, let alone two (or three) by himself. As an example, just from an US Army perspective, you might go out to the field for a week once every month or two. You might go to a training base for a month. You might get deployed for 6 months to a year and a half. How would you raise a child on your own? I don't think Garp was a good parental figure, but I can understand why he wasn't.
@@StyxUchiha So one...quit the marines... Yes, it is easier to raise a child when you're not in the military, that's kind of the point. And I'd love to know what chapter we find out Sengoku took a child Rosinante on missions with him, because I don't remember that at all. If he did, he's actually a horrible parent to take a small child out to sea to fight pirates and revolutionaries.
It’s nice to see someone from the literary crowd appreciate One Piece. Most fans of One Piece are also fans of other anime and manga, and when you try to show someone who isn’t part of that crowd the story they take one look at Luffy’s goofy smile and non-edgy design and a look at the series length and they don’t give it a chance. So it’s nice to see someone tell us that it’s not wrong that we love this series so much.
Honestly even other anime fans do that. "It looks too goofy and is too long" then proceeds to binge watch/read all the other long running shonen that were rivaling it's length before they had to come to an end lol. It's whatever though, most ppl watch anime like this cause of cool designs and action scene animation, or in the case of manga.... Cool designs I guess. Odas early, "opposite of edgy without getting into chibi cutesy realm" artstyle on the covers plus his intentional love of creating some of the most off the wall goofy designs for even the series' more complex and intimidating characters just goes against that instinct for those kinds of viewers I guess. But it's always a consistent story that whenever ppl do start the OP journey and DO get close to catching up, they wish more and more that it was longer after all lol
@@MagillanicaLouM I have a friend that roughly knows what is going to happen but is catching up by watching One Pace. Legit told me he didn't like Franky and then a couple days later told me Franky was growing on him. It's so fun to watch the evolution of people enjoying media you enjoy.
@@MagillanicaLouM One Piece genuinely has some of the best character designs I know of - on the one hand they are so off the wall creative at times, weird and often a little silly, but they just fit together almost perfectly for this world. It being absurd helps alot of course, but still, theres a strong coherence to the madness
i watch or read more than 50 anime nothing even come close to one piece in terms of story , people are so stupid that they dont give a chance to the series
Interesting Tidbit: Its widely accepted (but not confirmed) in the OP fanbase that the first time we saw haki was in chapter 1 when Shanks stared down the Sea King after saving Luffy.
Luffy once remembered that moment when discussing haki with someone (I think Rayleigh)...don't know if it's Anime only but at least there it was confirmed
@@misterbk1791 What you mean Garp? He was one of the first characters created if that's what you're talking about. There's various "rough drafts" for One Piece I guess you could call them, titled Romance Dawn. Garp and Luffy are the main characters, with the same grandfather/grandson relation, though some things about the characters are of course different than OP. Like Garp actually being a pirate, Luffy's inspiration and the original owner of the strawhat in one iteration. There's actually an animated special for it that came out like a year ago
Roger and Dragon is way more at fault. Roger bringing in a life into a very turmoil world (especially of his infamy) knowing he is dying and can't protect them. That is a no no on my part. Children don't consent to be born. Which is why the morality of parents to take care of their children. Dragon, well, father of the year award.
@@yolooo5081 like is not that black and white. I'm happy that ace exist. I don't fault Roger. As a human being, we're full of colors of emotions of life of essence of beauties of things etc. Wanting to leave behind a baby in the world before he dies is also not to be taken lightly. Ace life ended quick. But not all scenarios are like that. In the real world. We have babies who are in similar situations but ended up as a positive thing for the world vice versa.
@cancerxnd Roger knew what the Government would do to his son, which is why he begged Garp to protect him. Because he believed that his child shouldn't be responsible for his own crimes. True to his nature he wanted his child to live a free life. Perhaps he was being a little too optimistic. No offense, but I'm sure Portgas D. Rouge knew exactly what she was getting into when getting involved with Roger. Especially so, if Roger met her after he disbanded his crew, because that would mean she knew he was dying. She knew full well that he wouldn't be around to raise Ace and knew the consequences of being with Roger. On the flip side, Roger did indirectly and is responsible for the genocide of many pregnant women and their children.
Fun fact: The crossed out "S" in Ace's arm tattoo "ASCE" is an homage to the flag Sabo sails away under before getting attacked-- and how he signs the letter he leaves for them. A crossed out S. Whether "another brother" in the flashback feels forced or not (I was iffy on it as well my first read many years ago) Oda at least had something planned based on the tattoo! 👍🏴☠️
If you want to see more of Sabo you should watch the anime's version of the flashback. They had a lot more filler that added so much more detail for like 2 pages worth of panels in the manga, that showcased the brotherhood of ASL. It made Sabo feel less like a plot device and more like an actual brother to Luffy and Ace. Especially slotted in between Luffy and Ace. Where they're all wild and crazy, Sabo is the brains and luffy's "kind" brother that outwardly shows he cares, compared to Ace who's telling him to shut up and man up.
If he wasn't a big blue whale man he'd fit in perfectly with the nameless samurai of Wano, at least back during this time when we first met him. I never hated him but during Marineford I paid little attention to him and by a few years later I forgot what his role in it even was, I didn't even remember that he was involved when Luffy got the big chest scar that we all know. All throughout his appearances I've never cared much for him - possible reasons could include the fact I was watching the anime so I wasn't getting the real experience, or the fact his initial introduction and role bored me so I associated him with that boredom, or maybe even just that he looks too silly. There's readers that can look past the silly designs Oda gives characters, I respect that, glad for them, but Jinbe, Ivankov, Raizo, even Franky... all cool guys, all too weird-looking for me to ever take 100% seriously. So yeah that's why!
@@Falkuzrules to each their own I think he looks really cool lol so I guess beauty is really in the eye of the beholder there! I could definitely see how someone could feel he’s boring though his personality is very subtle. He’s lawful good and always does what’s honorable/honest even when it’s the harder option like when Ace tries to get him to promise to protect Luffy and Jinbei says “No” because he doesn’t know Luffy and can’t commit to protect someone so ambiguously. won’t fight for the Marines at marineford because he respects whitebeard/ all he does. Doesn’t lie to Nami about it being partly his fault that Arlong go so out of hand. Different things resonate with different people thanks for being honest!
No. People who never like jinbe is people who doesn't have different friends. "If you are weird looking i disliked you" that's something closest to racism.
This is the most intense point of the series, It was so draining that everyone including Oda took a 1-month break from the series. A suggestion (in my opinion) is you should now start reading 2nd half of the series with expectation as the first few arcs are buildup arcs. They will be easing you back in the series rather than with a bang
When Dadan was like "We aren't allowed to feel sad right now, because nobody is going through more pain than him. Luffy is the one suffering the most" and then you get back to Luffy's anger...always hits me in the feels
The voice acting of dadan ,Makhino and Shanks in that particular episode of anime still give me fresh chills down the spine. Anime did great on the content.
luffy gets deconstructed a little bit in this arc...I like how the mangaka basically restarts this character for the audience ands gives him this new backstory to show us why luffy and ace both became pirates and then this main character trauma guilt despair despite all he did as an underdog and how ace just could not walk away...luffy lost and i think he really experienced pain as did the audience and his naivety during arabasta when he told vivi that in war people will die kinda bit him in the ass hu...guess he did not mean those words...
Also a small detail to note, the moment of Rayleigh swimming through the calm belt is not just an insane feat of power by him, but it also hard confirms that he is not a devil fruit user since he can swim through the ocean. Which I find to be a genius and subtle piece of story telling especially since Rayleigh is about to give the explanation of haki to Luffy, because it shows that you don't need devil fruit powers to stand at the top of the world.
Of course.... We all know how 20 yo Zoro is a teenager... Ok to be fair Zoro was 19 when we met him and we don't know exactly how long it has been since then so there is a chance he is still 19... But still... This 20 year old teenager....
The three admirals and each marine having their own code of justice are some of the best things Oda has written. it shows how varied everyone even in the navy is, With Aokiji's Lazy Justice, Akainu's absolute justice and Kizaru's unclear justice. Each follow their own code, which only makes each one of them very fascinating. Also from the perspective of regular people, Akainu might be seen as a paragon of justice for regular people. As most pirates are violent people and Akainu is taking the fight to them, we have been seeing the story from the side of a pirate crew who is not like most other crews and doesn't attack people. Oda makes such complex characters, especially when we put ourselves in that world.
@@sohailsadaqat6684 oh I agree, I don't agree with akainu's actions but only way know about it as readers, as far as people are concerned they never knew he did all that. So for the regular people in that world, he is like that strict person who wants to defeat all the pirates, from the info that we would have gotten if we were just some random citizen on Alabasta or Sakura island, for us Marines would be the barons of justice and safety. I mean after whitebeards death, pirates start Ransacking everything and Garp placing his board in Fuschia village is an assurance for all the people that they will be safe.
@@marocat4749 flipping love kizaru because he is very very interesting. He is someone who can't take a stand perse. That's such a real character to write. Keep in mind that on a week by week issue, the fans hadn't seen the crew properly or a lot of in like 2-4 years at a 40 chapters/year rate so it was probably so hype with the crew flashbacks every week

I've already discarded my life for his sake."(luffy's) It is said that if luffy is to die in the series later on, Zoro would already be dead. Damn ! the unreal loyalty this man has for his captain.
I love how they're all super loyal to Luffy but Zorro's loyalty feels different, I love how he's always the one to stand by Luffy and when Luffy tells them to do something and sometimes the others argue Zorro's the one who says the captain has made his decision we're doing this - Wow do I love Zorro's character!
Haha when Merphy was taking about Dragon... I guess she forgot he's Garps son.... The 'repetitiveness' of the crew, do keep in mind some of these scenes were for weekly readers between 5 and 10 years prior to this, wich is a great call back and feels genuine, you read this just a couple of months ago wich can make it feel like that, becouse it's still very fresh in your mind. People grew up from teens to parents while weekly reading One Piece
The movies “One Piece: Strong World” and “One Piece: 3D2Y” might be fun to watch over your break. They fit where you are in the story. Neither are canon, but Strong World was written by Oda.
I second Strong World. I know a lot of people will then start to say "what about this or that movie or filler", but personally, Strong World is the only one that feels 100% like Oda's work, for good reason, and can be considered loosely canon anyway since it almost perfectly fits after Thriller Bark anyway with only some small continuity issues.
@@MIrfanPerdana The character is canon but the movie isn't, and I don't want it to be canon either. Mainly because it make negatively sense for pre-timeskip Luffy to be able to beat him.
"It's not that I love this series I'm obsessed with it" I know that feeling. I wish I could forget everything except that it's an epic and well thought story and experience it for the first time again
I'd wish the same, but then again, having this dread to wait a week after crucial chapters is something else. Some people also complain in the later arcs that it is just to much input if you read it in one go, tho if you read weekly you never got this feeling and were rather appreciative of it, to have so much to dig through.
I started OP last year and I'm also not a manga person but I have also become totally obsessed with it. I can't believe how good it is. Its so fun to find this amazing thing out of nowhere as an adult. I like it the same way I liked Star Wars when I was 10 years old. Never saw it coming.
I don't know if you have checked it out yet, but I strongly recommend the Berserk manga. I personally don't care for anime/manga but that's the best shit I've ever read, with One Piece in second place.
While there have been parts of the story that got me emotional up to this point; I think it was around the "I have my crew!!" page where I started crying. This whole sequence (Sabody -> Impel Down -> War -> Post War) is so well done, its incredible.
Buddha is the fleet admiral Aokiji / Akainu / Kizaru are admirals Garp is a vice admiral In rank Aokiji is already above Garp. But Garp has seniority and seems to be put on similar footing to Buddha, plus he has the status of a hero. Pretty sure it's sengoku talking in the speech bubble about recommending Aokiji to be promoted to fleet admiral. Some navy rank stuff that can be easily confusing
Yeah just one thing oda confirmed garp was the strongest marine at marineford including the admirals and sengoku and in chapter 0 you see him saying no to the fleet admiral because he doesn’t want to be admiral at all because it’s less free
@@misterbk1791 oda never said garp was the strongest, fans made that up he never did, oda already put aokiji as the strongest marine pre time skip, gorosei said that about him. Things like garp is the strongest marine or akainu was supposed to die, are things fans made up. Neither was true
I think dadan and garp being hard on kids is similar to strict asian adults who punishes naughty kids by inflicting small level of pain. It's common in Asian parenting and schools. My mom still has the stick she used to beat me. But onepiece having the exaggerated world it has, I understand why it looks like abuse.
True. As an asian, I was surprised teachers don't beat you in schools, in the rest of the world. And you could even report them if any such thing happened. My mind was blown. That's culture shock I guess. It also annoys me that people who watch anime call any small hits as violence or abuse. It makes me think how different of a culture we have.
Given the world in pne piece is one of the strong, it makes sense garp does toughen them up that they are fine. Keep in mind, he wants them to be marines, wherevthey need to be strong, even more as pirates with ambitions.
I love how you bring attention to almost everytime Luffy says or implies a suggestion or command to his crew they trust so hard in his character that they just calmly do what Luffy needs them to do without question. For a crew that is filled with strong willed/stubborn characters who love to argue amongst themselves, it's amazing when Luffy speaks with actual weight their automatic internal response is instantly "Aye, Aye, Captain" and they just trust so hard. I just love how Oda writes trust/mutual respect. Beyond just trust like you mentioned this could also have to do with Haki but I am not caught up (currently just hit chapter 680) so we will see. I'm curious if Haki will always remain a "soft" system or if we will get very specific details on how it all works. (No spoilers please :p) I was worried to start this series because of the length but now I'm at the point where I never want this series to end!
Two things: -Now you know why Luffy said "Ace is my only brother IN THE WORLD", because Sabo is dead. -Please watch opening 14 "Fight Together", 2:30 minutes of pure bliss and some tears. Well, three things, your t-shirt is amazing!
It probably seemed repetitive now mostly because you’ve been binging the series in only a few months. Ten years ago when this particular material was still being released weekly, it wasn’t nearly as obvious as we hadn’t seen many of the crew in the pages for over a year.
This^ I remember enjoying each mini arc of what the individual Strawhats were doing because I had been so long since they were on panel in the main story.
I'm jealous of you Merphy... I wish I could erase my memories of One Piece and experience it for the first time again. This is genuinely one of the greatest experiences I've ever had in any fictional medium- It really warms my heart every week seeing even a booktuber as well versed in fantasy literature as you are fall more and more in love with this series- and to such a deep, personal, and passionate degree. I hope this inspires a wave of One Piece readership across booktube, it's such a beautiful story that I feel is underappreciated (perhaps due to the stigma of the manga medium) amongst the book/film community. I'd give my arm to see this story be eventually read by the likes of Brandon Sanderson, Stephen King, or GRRM.
Is Jamie Lee Curtis enough? She is not an adult fantasy author, but she has written several really well-liked child stories. She is an actress first, yes, but at least she is a writer too. Plus she is great and she LOVES One Piece. Chopper is her favorite character, whose VA in the dub is a friend of hers. She had said that if she could choose to play any character, it'd be Nico Robin (which makes perfect sense, Robin is amazing in every possible way), but aware of her age and physique, both her and her daughter want her to play Kureha in the Live Action adaptation, and I'm 100% for it
When you have such a long running story, most of the readers will want flashbacks of previous events in the story so Oda having all these "repetitive" flashbacks of when Luffy asked them to join the crew, it had already been years and years for a lot of the fan base and it was much needed!
With the crew getting their own individual moments remembering luffy… you gotta remember during the run of the war arc. We the readers haven’t really seen them for 2 years in real world time. So it was welcomed they all had a little moment.
About your point that the straw hat crew scenes felt repetitive, it’s pretty important to note this past saga was told over a few years and the extra screen time was much appreciated
You should try reading chapter 0 of one piece (called strong world) , it shows a little more history of One-piece. It's supposed to be read after Marineford, its just 1 chapter
But it eould be best if she watches the movie strong world, it will explain the first ever escapee of impel down, the panel with the floating thing over capone beges ship and the tree where luffy left his hat
@@SuperGoodbadguy chapter 0 shows that he escaped as well also we don't know if that was shiky doing that The events of the film never actually happened
During the “I want to live” scene at Enies Lobby, right before Luffy tells Sogeking to shoot the flag, Spandam says “You can’t possibly understand what you’re dealing with when you try to protect this woman!” to which Luffy replies, “I understand Robin’s enemy very well.” Now with this flashback, we realize that Luffy really does understand the horrors of the nobles and the world government because he understands what Sabo went through as a child of nobles.
Though to be precise, the world nobles and the nobles on that particular island are very different. While both are snobbish, those nobles atleast only had status and power inside their island-kingdom, while world nobles have their status recognized by the world goverment, which makes them influential on a global scale.
I love Merphy’s reviews, reactions and insights to the story of One Piece. First we had Totally Not Mark with his complete blind in depth series review and now Merphy is doing the same man we One Piece fans are really getting a treat with all of these video
Ace's tattoo makes more sense after this flashback too. The crossed out S was Sabo's jolly roger. And you know the time skip was well placed and well executed when most people know that it exists, but nearly everyone expects the crew to meet back up until the until meaning of 3D2Y is revealed.
Just a slight correction: sabo's family didn't decide to burn the grey terminal, the king and nobles of the Goa kingdom decided to, they just went along with it because they wanted the bonuses that are becoming of nobles
My interpretation at least was that they burned it because the nobles would be visiting. And they burned it so that it wouldn't look bad on them. Although I could be wrong feel free to correct me
Goa Kingdom & Dawn Island storyline reflect the class disparity in living condition between the rich/nobles and the poor/outcast. The burning of Grey Terminal (the junkyard where the poor lives) was done in order to hide/erase the existence of such settlement and to improve the Goa Kingdom status in the eyes of the World Nobles.
When this flashback happened, I really disliked the idea of Sabo initially. My first thought was that he was just added to make it easier to get over Ace, because hey, look, here's another brother you can like instead! And it really bothered me because you can't just easily replace Ace like that?? So I was genuinely glad when his ship got blown up (even though I liked him as a character, just not his percieved role as replacement brother). To me, the flashback and Sabo's apparent death worked _because_ it established so well why Ace and Luffy clung to each other so desperately - because they only had each other after Sabo died. And returning to the present from there to Luffy who has now lost EVERYTHING, only for Jimbei to show him that...no, he has friends now, he has his crew, he isn't that helpless kid anymore that clung to Ace when he had no one else, and regaining his will to find them again and become strong enough to be able to protect them ....that was such a good emotional thorough-line to me 🥲
I like when you describe your "I wasn't ready for everything to comeback around" moment thinking it's just you.. it's all of us our first time xd PRAISE GODA
The crew's scenes shows us strongly that Straw Hat Crew never disobeys Luffy's orders, which he gives rarely. But they are always furious about his shenanigans:D
Just a quick correction, Nami wasn’t pretending to cry. She was crying for real. If anything she was pretending to NOT cry. You can see in a small panel where she is crying. And the old man notices it.
@@kurasuta3715 nahhh, she is actually crying in that crying scene and she pushes it as a fake cry to fool them and she cries again for real which she always cried for real.
@@poof9327 No, the scene you're referring to happens in chapter 591 where Nami escapes from prison to get to Luffy after she finds out about Ace's death and she's still distraught. The scene Merphy and I mean is in chapter 596 when she already knows about the plan and wants to study there. She's really fake crying there to get the forgiveness of the wizard dudes Sorry to be pedantic about this
Sabo is hinted at beforehand. The Tattoo on Aces arm with the crossed out S is Savoy flag and in mariners Ace mentions Sabo. As well as the shadow of a 3rd cup in the flashback scene. As for Haki Kobe hearing voices disappear or when kizaru got kicked by Marco and he says Haki users are annoying. We now know what the power difference is that we've felt but never understood. Time to get stronger 3D2Y
One Piece: a story where one of the biggest flexes in the world is…. A good breaststroke. All Rayleigh needs to do to prove his godly strength is to go for a refreshing swim.
just a couple of thing: To understand why such parenting figures are so relevant in OP without being seen as inherently bad tutors, (Garp/Dadan/Sanji's one legged cook etc..) it's good to know a bit of Japanese culture itself, where the stereotypical "tough love" is a lot more prevalent and present, and so it the concept of being a "tsundere" (cold but warm personality). Not justifying any sort of behavior, it's just interesting to see how different cultures create different prospective on certain things. second: since OP fans, as you might have understood by now, like to theorize on everything, around this period it has been asked to Oda why all the world nobles looked so ugly, if there was a secret behind their origin and genealogy. Oda reply was that he hates them soo much that whenever he is drawing them he can't help but make them as ugly as possible. and idk, I love it so fucking much. I sincerely recommend you not to miss the Sbs (Q&A )at the end of each volume as they can be hilarious and or hide secret/additional infos relevant to the story.
@@sourabh3811 It was, and still is, one of the theories thrown around, (can you really trust Oda after all? That deceiving little snake) but saying more would mean diving into spoiler territory so noppp
Also, Dadan and Zeff aren't what you'd call morally upstanding people. They both basically robbed people for a living until circumstances changed (Dadan being caught by Garp, Zeff loosing his leg and opening the Baratie). They're good people, but that doesn't mean they were always good people, and even good people are flawed. The whole Garp thing is played for more comedy than the above two examples, so I didn't include it.
@@alexjacobs6713 the saga of Alabasta was around 100, but the arc itself is like 60 chapters. Post timeskip, singular arcs are the length of entire pretimeskip sagas.
I've always thought this flashback would've worked better before Marineford but after Impel Down. Would have given additional weight to the Marineford arc would have been more impactful seeing Sabo be the first brother that died THEN seeing Ace die would have felt more crushing than it already did because we would have had the context of Luffy feeling all alone in the world despite Ace promising he would never die.
I think there's a bit of a cultural disconnect in terms of how kids are supposed to be treated. Kids, on average, are treated in a more... spartan... sort of way in most Asian cultures. Abuse, in a way that is understandably bizarre, can also be something that isn't too far off from tough love.
Besides, Dadan and her people were bandits, living in the mountains. They probably were raised in a violent and unstable environment, so for them that kind of abuse is sort of a natural form of treating them.
@@ismailuchiha nah, even with the westerners it's more often a very specific, almost niche, white, middle class and up, usamericans. every other non-white immigrants and diaspora in the US seems to also share that childhood experience. shit, even in the US alone, around the southern area like texas and florida, it seemed to be quite common-at least from my conversations with mates from those places. then there's of course the latino americans. idk about europe though. idk, all in all the way i see it ""tough love"" bordering on abuse (or even just straight up abuse) seems a lot more like a generational thing than a cultural/regional thing. it just so happen that some places are moving away from the method earlier than other places, and while the preferred method may differ, it's by no means an "X-place thing."
@@razkable yeah, I wrote my comment without checking, it was almost 13 years. One Piece started publishing in late 1997 and the "3D2Y arc" started in April of 2010.
18:54 Lmao.....I think she forgot the fact that dragon's dad is garp when the whole dragon noble theory is going on...... wait.... what if garp is also a noble......*mindblown* lol
@@pbtenchi I mean Monkey D. Garp, Monkey D. Dragon, Monkey D. Luffy, I am pretty sure it is one Bloodline. Luffy shares looks and characteristics with Garp and the Will of Freedom with Dragon. But then again the only one who really knows is Oda and maybe you are right.
Garp says to luffy "You are the son of my son ......bla bla bla" English translation had it like " You are the son of my child" and some people tought he was the father of luffys mom. Japanese he says musuko no musuko=son of my son.
I think it'd be really cool to have you and Daniel do a sort of guided discussion of each arc after y'all both catch up. You both like the series but have very different view points on certain topics and you guys bounce off each other very well!
This is one of the arcs I've revisited the least, so sometimes I forget just how amazing Jimbei was here. So thank you for your enthusiasm and gushing reminding me of that. Been binging these reviews the last few days and have really loved watching your journey so far (I especially loved the Enies Lobby video). Really looking forward to your rereads, not just for the things that you didn't retain the first time around, but for things that just have deeper meaning because of what you know now.
Hey Merph congrats you're already halfway through the series. Seeing your first review from up to this point, I'm so glad how you've become so attached to it. As always, I'll be looking forward to your One Piece Fridays. Enjoy your breather and of course your re-read.
I've read one of the comments in another video that said: Luffy's response to all of his problems is just smashing through it, punched his way through it. But in this arc, when he failed, the thoughts of guilt clouded his mind and he doesn't know to respond it, so he just smashed his head to a rock while saying "GO AWAY",
I love these videos because it's awesome to see someone else fall in love with this series as well, and to relive all its wildest moments. But sometimes you pick up on details that I completely missed, like Luffy's deep-rooted fear of being alone and how that's affected his choices, and those are the times that make these videos so outstanding to me!
I'm probably the only one that doesn't enjoy post-time skip One Piece Dressrosa drained my soul Whole Cake was fine though But Wano is draining my soul again
@@arenkai Just don't read it weekly, wait until the arc (or in Wano's case, acts) is finished and binge it. That's what i did reading Dressrosa and WCI
@@Chocolangot I just did a re-read of the whole series, and everything was fine until punk hazard and dressrosa There, I thought Dressrosa was way too long The arc is massive for the world since it introduces the fleet, but it didn't have to be this long and convoluted to achieve the same results imo. ironically, Whole Cake was the arc that made me drop reading One Piece weekly, but this time I had a blast reading it in one go ! Only thing I don't like is Luffy winning against Katakuri, just feels cheap to me, but I understand that's a shonen trope of people getting stronger in battle and whatnot, but man... I think it would have been better if Luffy lost to Katakuri but managed to stand his ground. It would also fit with what Shanks told him "Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes you run away", and would have served to show some growth in Luffy. Which is something I think I dislike too: Luffy didn't grow in the two years. He got stronger, sure, but otherwise he's still the same as post-skip That's a choice and I get it, but I was disappointed I didn't want him to become some mature person, but at least somewhat more "captain-y" ? But I think my tw biggest disappointment from the New World are: 1- everything feels rushed. There's no more feeling of "oh what's next ? let's explore !" it"s more like "we're on this straight line and we are forced into these conflicts and we HAVE to go from A to B. Which I think bothers me because the New World was supposed to be this whole new sea with very weird stuff and 3 log pose pointing to three islands each time, which made me think "OH ?! Even more adventure and discoveries at random ??? Let's explore !" But instead we go from one place to the next in a straight line without much pause between the major events, so it feels very rushed to me. 2- There is very little interaction between the crew members and I feel like they are secondary characters in face of a plethora of other secondary characters (dressrosa for example) The arcs feel less personal, and we don't see the crew together as much just interacting So it feels like I haven't seen much of the "new" crew together since they set sail for Fishman island Which might explain why Whole Cake is my favourite arc so far in the NW ! it's focused heavily on a character's place in the crew and the bond they share. And that's my favourite part of One Piece For all these reasons, my peak enjoyment of One Piece was: Water7/EniesLobby for character interactions and crew ImpelDown/Marineford for overall plot And I feel like the world building was stronger before
@@arenkai I agree with the sentiment that Dressrosa was super king but what I disagree with is that it’s kinda needed considering the fact that there are so many different players in the arc and so many different factions with their own goals if you were to cut stuff away you would lose incite into why the people that are there are there for also it’s kinda been built up to be linear considering the whole Zoe thing where they agreed to help the people of Wano and Luffy declaring war on some of the biggest names on the grand line especially since we are fairly deep into the grand line we are at the point at which all of the most powerful people kinda start to condense
Merphy, as a one piece fan and a book reader I've been more than happy with your reviews, thank you sincerely! Also, from here on, once you start moving foward again, most arcs are going to be very BIG in number of chapters, so I think you would benefit in taking your time reading and maybe splitting up some arcs into two or three parts.
“I hope you’ll stick with me. I know I’ve past the big moment in the series…” Don’t worry Merphy, we don’t abandon our crew members. There is still many amazing moments to look forward to. We’ll be waiting for you in the shores of *spoiler land*! Be sure to come!
