I always ride my bike with a HEIGHTENED awareness….you can’t be too careful….always assume people don’t see you….and I was a paramedic for over 38 years and attended alot of motorcycle accidents, but it’s never stopped me from riding, it’s in my blood and I love it…ride safe everyone !!!

Yup… shit happens. I drove professionally for the Department of Highways, here in Canada for over 20 years. Defensive driving was drilled into our heads, over and over through defensive driving courses. I’m constantly expecting the unexpected, scanning the road and other traffic every second. You’re right… you really can’t be truly relaxed, especially in city and expressway traffic. Good catch on your part at that intersection. Night time is especially hazardous, with all the various lights to distract drivers.

Just that past Sunday on my way home from morning service I had a woman (at a traffic light ) creep up on me to the point she was less than six inches off my tour pack, I turned in and glared at her threw my arm up and yelled HEY. she looked up from her phone gave me the one finger salute. P.S. I did leave myself and ''out'' but I would have been over the double yellow. Be ever diligent people and keep an eye on those mirrors when stopped at traffic lights.

Several of us riders were BS-ing at the local cycle gear store about how much worse drivers of 4 wheels have become since coming out of the pandemic. Way worse at least in our area at least. A lot of them have hair triggers that can set off nasty road rage. Every one of us agreed that women seem to especially hate motorcyclists and are more prone to aggressive driving towards us.

I have practiced the first option many times. Slam the brakes on to scrub off speed whilst looking for an escape route, come off the brakes and go in the chosen direction. This is in the hope of avoiding ‘tunnel vision’ and hitting the vehicle. Secondly; not practised. If impact imminent, jump off and over the bonnet of the vehicle. As we all know from watching ‘motorcycle racing’ scrubbing off speed on horizontal surface with good kit is when you walk away. I might add I have been riding for 50 years and can panic brake whilst having the muscle memory to only apply the required amount of pressure, rather that locking the wheels (pre abs) or extending braking with ABS! I might add the above was not reckless riding, rather riding an emergency response motorcycle through London 10 plus years. So on the limit rather than the luxury of being more defensive.

As a lifelong bicyclist and forty-two year motorcycle rider, I can tell you that eye-contact with a motorist means absolutely nothing - do not ever believe they have seen you. I might have to get cameras for my rides, as it seems drivers are more than willing to run off after leaving you bleeding on the road. Funny how there are never any witnesses to be found.

I had two similar incidents yesterday. In the second incident the fellow ran a light from my right and the car to my left t-boned him. It was eerie to watch it unfold. Both vehicles were like totaled.

Do not forget the shorts and flip-flops LOL. I want to thank you again for the info on the rear tire at DFW. I was leaving to go to Micydees for coffee and got to the end of the driveway before I noticed the tire light. Now that has come on in the past after a cool night but when I got old red up to speed for the sensor to kick in I had 9 psi. If there is any good out of this, I was home and had a newly mounted and balanced rear tire ready for installation. Thanks, Robert. Be safe

18+ years as a tracker trailer driver.... lifetime motorcycle rider... I'm with you ALWAYS 3 ways out. And the breaks are ALWAYS a last resort. as I approach any intersection, if I can't make eye contact with any driver making a left, I wait to figure out what they are doing or get through the intersection before they start their turn. Everyone is just in such a rush.

Yes Cruismeman, here in the UK we have advanced riding groups Like IAM (institute of advanced motorists) and ROSPA. It gives you a great awareness of the road and things around you. I did this course a few years ago and it gave me a lot more confidence in my riding. Do you guys have anything like this over there?

I just had an F150 turn left in front of me. I almost missed him. If I had been able to swerve about 3 inches further to the right, I would have avoided him altogether. Minor damage to mirror, accessory highway pegs and saddle bag... Strained muscles... And a somewhat rattled sense of safety. Just a week before that, was almost rear ended by a car not paying attention. And just last week, someone I know lost their wife in an accident. Starting to wonder how much longer I'll be riding.

The vehicle was initiating their turn well before you were anywhere near them. You had plenty of time to take action and slightly apply the breaks, as you did. The driver would have likely done that if you were driving a car. Yes, the driver is a moron, but let's be real here. You were in no danger of being hit and as a goldwing rider myself, I experience these types of drivers almost everytime I'm on the road and when driving my Jeep. This was no where near a close call and shouldn't have even raised your heart rate. Geez. You want something to put on your videos, come ride in Utah.

I will tell you, even if I am in my 5000 pound truck, I am staying situationally aware. You can't relax no matter what or where you are driving. I am not sure if you have ever been able to. Even before the days of the internet, you use have people reading a newspaper or book, putting on makeup, they might have kids in the back seat fighting. The most dangerous thing you can do is to assume that a green light means you can go. Its best to just to ignore the fact that street signs exist and only pay attention to what the other vehicles are actually doing second by second.
