In this video I'll explain why taking balls early will generate more errors from your opponent, HOW to take balls early more efficiently, and WHEN you should be looking for the short ball.

What I really like about these videos is that Stokke is as good a teacher as he is a player: he’s articulate and gives, clear, practical, no-nonsense advice. Clearly he’s putting some thought and effort into this- and it shows.

I tried out positioning myself a little bit further back behind the baseline and noticed immediate improvement in my groundstroke consistency. It's crazy how simple coaching can make a huge difference. Thank you, coach!

Love the topic Stokke! Taking advantage of short shots from your opponent can seriously increase your chances of winning points but it’s not practiced enough. Moving side to side on the tennis court accurately is much easier than moving forward and backwards for most players. Really good tips on how to anticipate the depth of shot based on the height over net and speed. I understand and use the concept for shots high over the net but never considered the reverse for shots low over the net for some reason. Thank you both for the excellent demonstration as well!

Love this video, liked and subscribed, one of the best videos i have come across in years. 👏 I have been teaching my 11 year old similar things shown here, as he stands too close to the baseline, but he also struggles to recognise short balls early so always too late to them and hitting them around his ankles.

Phenomenal video, coach! I especially love the last few minutes where you show someone doing a drill that focuses on the issue at hand - showing what “incorrect” and “correct” looks like. It helps rec players work with their coaches to improve - Thanks!

Great vid. Patrick, could you do a video on proper technique for hitting a ball very early, on the rise? I feel like it's an inevitable shot that requires a different swing. Thanks for your work it has helped so much.

Great video! When I have to run a far ways to get to a really short ball (I'm talking ones that land well inside the service line and I had to charge to even get it, also balls that stay low and don't bounce high), sometimes all I can do is slice it to my opponent or pop it up. Any tips on how to quickly recognize whether it's better to retreat and reset the point or stay at the net? I'm watching my opponent to try to see whether he or she is having trouble with my ball, but often I feel like a sitting duck and by the time I read it, it's too late. It may just be a weak position no matter what.

Amazing how instinctively I do this yet there is room for improvement by consciously focusing on it. I’m better on the forehand side. Next time with the ball machine I’m gonna grill my backhand with shorter balls to gain comfort with taking that shot earlier. Any tips on deep balls to the backhand side? It’s really a weak shot for me… Currently the ball plays me.
