Really well covered, one of the best I have seen covering this system. In the future I wouldn’t compare a high end boom mic to a small wireless mic or lav, a high quality boom mic will almost alway sound better and is a generally different class and use case.
I'm actually looking at ordering on of these today, I'm surprised more people aren't jumping on these at this price point. Great review, and I love Deity products (have a D3 Pro, and a lav).
I'm totally with you. The quality of the accessories is also outstanding. I just finished an edit on my first corporate gig using this setup and it performed really well. I was also using a Rode Wireless Go on set (2 person interview) and there were a couple of dropouts. Not sure if it was line of sight issues or they were competing for 2.4 GHz space, but aside from the isolated incident, it performed perfectly.
Thanks for this review. I wish Deity hadn't adopted the whole yellow/black thing (chuckling). Did you try the lav with the transmitter body in a pocket or clipped inside a jacket/coat? I wonder if that would be similar to losing line of site, and lead to dropouts.
I had it in my my sweater pocket for a lot of the filming and it never seemed to be an issue, just the body movements, which was a little disappointing to be honest. Thanks for the comment
It would be really tough to do that. Because they operate on the 2.4gHz spectrum, you’ll likely have a lot of crosstalk interference between them. You’d be better off looking for a mic setup with 2 channels like the Rode Wireless Go II, Rode Wireless Pro, DJI mic, or Hollyland Lark Max. Otherwise there are plenty of wired options that would work well also.
As far as I know, there is no way to accomplish two units with the Pocket Wireless. I'd check out the DJI mic and the Rode if you're looking for dual channel.
Ya know, I was disappointed it did not come with the second receiver until.. I saw this video and realized it picks up a second person’s voice very well!
Not at all! I know there are way newer models out now..but i like the sound of this and I can get the mic and the whole vlog kit for $100. I can’t really think of a situation where I would be turning my back away from the microphone unless filming a sketch comedy with another person. But for vlogging and stand-up comedy events, I think it’s great. You did the best review I’ve seen so far👏🏻
Oooo interesting, I never saw that in their marketing materials. Do you think they are legit analog limiters (pre conversion)? That seems pretty abnormal in this price bracket! Thanks for the the info
@@randyrektor The manufacturer doesn't tell you the details, although they explicitly call it the ANALOG limiter. IDK, where else could it be in the chain? Sounds only reasonable to put it somewhere between the mic and the ADC. I guess try to get it to clipping and see how it behaves. Now that I think of it, maybe that's why it has only 5 hours of battery life. This circuit must be always on.
Interesting! I just watched the product announcement video from Deity, and they said something to the effect of "in loud environments, our analog limiter will bring the levels down so that it sounds the way you intended it".. By that wording, I wonder if it's just gain controlling the mic pre as opposed to an actual analog limiter. OR I am just being cynical and its actually a true analog limiter. I just find it hard to believe an analog limiter that you'd find in a $1000 field recorder exists in this form factor... Then again, it's 2022 lol! Very interesting either way!
@@randyrektor I didn't find any concrete info either. They have a name for it" "guard rail TM". ;) Analog limiter is not a complicated circuit, but it eats your battery. Surely it's not built like in a field recorder, because it doesn't have the same noise and distortion requirements. And a field recorder doesn't have the same noise requirement as a studio recorder. These small transmitters are very noisy and they heavily rely on keeping the level high above the noise floor. They add some gating and compression in their firmware anyway, so a crappy VCA in the front propably won't do much damage. A simple VCA adds some small cost in parts, but who know's what's inside these boxes, maybe they have a codec with a limiter function on it's input.
@@randyrektor was thinking about picking this up for real estate videos. Those dropouts have me thinking though. Did you experience dropouts even at really close range? Say 15ft or so with the back turned? Thanks!
Hey Brian, sorry for the delay. Your comment was marked as spam? I dont know what RU-vid thought looked spammy about it. ANYWAYS, there definitely were some close range dropouts with my back turned, especially around walls and such. They are rare, but they do happen. The thing is that any of these 2.4GHz units (Rode, Comica, Deity, etc) they will all have this issue as they are used over wifi bands. That said, if your shoots are low-stakes, you could always double check the clip or have your camera person wear headphones. If you truly need to be super mobile with no drops, maybe the Tentacle Sync recorder or Tascam Lav/recorder may work best. These dont have wireless function so you'll need to sync the recording in post. Hope this helps a bit!
@@randyrektor thats strange it got marked spam. Anyway, thanks for the reply back. One thing i like about the rode is that you can have a backup track recording right in the transmitter. Dji's new wireless system seems to have that as well. Wish Deity included that in this unit.
Yes! I wish Deity did as well because I like their product a lot better. The sound quality is superior in my own opinion. That would definitely work for you. The only downside is having to sync files in post, but only if you have dropouts which is nice. I'm currently reviewing a unit by LensGo (348c) and it's REALLY nice sounding. The only thing is the recorded sound has some strange ringing going on. I am going to see if I can figure out if it's an issue with my units or all. If it's fixable, these are easily the best sounding units I've tested!
Kinda dumb isn’t it? It’s a flaw of the 2.4ghz wifi band. It’s a really weak band, but one of the easier ones to operate within legally, that’s why companies use it.
