I received my first edition of this book as a wedding present 43 years ago. My dear husband got me a new copy last year for my birthday because I had thoroughly worn the first one out. I would highly recommend it.

@@redbeardedalaskaman1237 I've used the jerky recipe in the past but mostly I use the recipes for canning and general cooking. It is a wonderful book just for sitting down and reading as well because she shares her life experiences as well as the how to's.

Another excellent book was by Reader's Digest printed in the 70's-80's called BACK TO BASICS. VERY thorough and detailed for sustainability totally off-grid. Thanks again for ALL you and Patrick do to HELP others, God Bless!

If I could only have one homestead related books, it would be this one. It's not the best book on any specific topic, but it's so exhaustive that it's by far the most useful book overall.

I have that book, it's old but so useful, my book was printed in 1977. It's awesome, I have used it so many times. Best gift my brother-in-law ever gave me. 👩🏽‍🌾👍🏽💙💚💜💛

I highly recommend getting a newer edition. Unlike a lot of books that remove some things in order to add new things, this one she only added to. It just got more and more useful with time!

Carla Emery’s book should be in every homesteaders library. I received my first copy in the 1980s. It’s a true blessing. I have since found it several times at used bookstores and purchased copies for friends and family.

Carla Emery is the real deal! I've referred to her book for many years (bought new in 1977). It was a life saver when we were pioneering our place in the early 80s. I have so much respect for her knowledge and skills that I recommend it to anyone who actually wants to know the how-to of so many country skills. Thanks for bringing it up Heidi--I know you'll get lots of use out of it too.

A gun works! And where my farm is, I can shoot (well I can't but a neighbor can) take out any critter that is harrassing my livestock. Also a few donkeys (depends on how much land you have) and some of the bear dogs (yes, they were bred to take out bears) will also protect you. And, oh, my, that bear FAT is incredible to have for your boots and any leather.

Heidi thank you so much for this video, it is a reminder that I need to review the books in our library more often. I had the privilege of meeting Carla Emery and hear her speak on preparedness in 1999. She autographed my book at that time. Your video helped me to remember what a great reference book it is. The way it is written is exactly like having a one-on-one conversation with her. I am happy her family is continuing to publish the book for future generations. Thanks for the video. Take care.

My copy was printed in 1994 when my youngest was three and we had moved to the country. I grew up in the suburbs, and my mom and I had just started our journey in canning jams and jellies. I wanted to know how to homestead when it wasn’t a thing in my family and friend circle. She was my go-to book when I didn’t know how to do something. Back then, the internet wasn’t known. How far we have come. I love her light hearted humor also. You remind me of her even though I had never met her. Thanks for the review. Take care.

Have had this book in my amazon basket for a long time. So thanks for this. In the UK the self sufficiency guru (1970s onwards) was John Seymour. His book "self-sufficiency ", since updated, is great. Beautiful drawn illustrations as well. Later he published others. I have: "forgotten household crafts", and "the forgotten arts". His advice and knowledge was/is wonderful. He caused such a following in the 1970s that a comedy series was made called "the Good life". Very funny but also brought the concept of (urban?) homesteading to a whole new audience. I don't know if you can access it in America but its well worth a watch for light entertainment. Thankyou Heidi for all your vlogs. I love watching your channel.......incidentally Ioved your hair ties idea. I adapted it slightly so that, instead of tying in a bow, I tied a permanent knot and use them like a hairband with the ties hanging down at the side. I have had a number of complimentary comments. So thanks again. Ordinary hairbands get loose after a while.

This is one of the best books on country living I've ever seen. So detailed and, though I love the Foxfire series (at least the first six volumes), this one is so much better organized and more specific.

Ahhh I love Carla's book--probably my favorite of all. I have an older copy because I had heard that they retain more of her 'voice' and I really enjoyed that. The newer versions have more updated safety concerns (canning, etc.) and web sites, etc. Her writing style makes me feel like we can really get to know who she was as a person. She was so very wise. I think her book should have a place on every homesteader's shelf. Thanks for the review!

I have been reading the introduction of the encyclopedia of country living. The letters the trials and tributes. I find it so comforting and influencing. I am 58 years old and just was able to retire when the pandemic hit all of us. But through all the sickness that I and my husband and close friends and family members have endured due to the COVID 19, I will say that God has weighed heavy on my heart since slowing down and helped me to reflect on all things beautiful even during a dark time. I knew when Rain Country showed this book to me that I knew I needed to have it for some reason. I am grateful that I did the author of this book has touched my heart and soul in many ways. And so has Rain Country you encouraged us that this all can be done with patience and GOD and what he has given to us to sustain ourselves. Thank you so much

I got “Lost Ways” as a gift this year. There are some things I really like in it, but it’s not very extensive at all. I have the book “Back to Basics” that I really like. It talks a bit about everything, but not real in-depth on anything. I’ll have to pick up a copy of The Encyclopedia of Country Living” as I’d like to pick up a piece of land some where more remote than I am now.

I’ve collected (and regretfully given away) a lot of homesteading books over the years but this one is the best of the best IMO. One of my grandkids ripped the cover off my 1994 edition as a toddler and I never repaired it - now I notice the pages are yellowed and the binding is loosening.. Don’t I need a new copy?? Lol I think Storey’s Basic Country Skills and Reader’s Digest Back to Basics are good books too.

Yes, bees are great and I would love to but there is much more to it for my own situation and it can be tricky in a place where there are heavy rains finding the perfect place to keep them where they will be safe from the high winds and rain. We have NO space left here at the house and would have to resort to our other piece of property and with so very many other irons in the fire and other plans we are trying to make for out there as well, it is not something I am able to undertake at this time

How thurough is it on preserving meat. Its easy to find info on canning meat but its much more difficult to find info on alternative preservation tequniques

Sp3aking of infused oils, I did that. I infused olive oil with dandelion, but it smelled weird so I'm not sure how to make sure when I do these things if it's ganna be ok to ingest.😅 I made dandelion infused apple cider vinegar and now the mother just keeps growing and growing. Idk if it's bad bacteria in there or WHATS going on 😆

If you heated the olive oil or stored it for a long time in a very warm area, it could have been rancid. I never use olive oil for infusions for this reason because it is not heat stable the way avocado oil is. On the vinegar, if you are speaking of the SCOBY that typically grows on top, there is nothing wrong with that, it is simply a healthy vinegar. SCOBYs are most likely to form on apple, pear, and peach vinegars and they tend to get bigger than those on other vinegars. Totally normal
