In this video I talk about a VERY important concept in autism parenting (and one that can be applied to any parenting journey as well!) I also discuss how exactly you can apply this rule in your day-to-day lives.
As the mother of an autistic three year old who is currently non-speaking but incredibly capable in many areas, this principle is something I apply every single day.

Presuming competence in my son has been the single biggest factor in his advancement. I think we should do this with all children, but it’s obviously especially important for children with autism. Ty for posting!

How true. My 3 year old is minimally verbal but his non verbal cognition surprises me a lot of times. Thanks for this...

We sound so much alike! Except you are waaaaayyyyy more articulate than I am. Another VITAL and perfectly delivered video by my fav friend in my head! Side note or rather THE KEY NOTE: There could never be a better mom for Dexter than you! Amazing how these boys have helped us evolve (and here i was thinking i had it figured out prior to having kids! ha!)

Can you please do a video on hyperlexia? Dexter reminds me so much of my nephew in a lot of ways. He is verbal though, and with an extensive vocabulary, but it is repetition, mimicry and memorisation (reciting his books) rather than ‘functional’. When you described Dexter’s reading and memory in another video it was so familiar. I’m curious to hear more.

This is such an important message! It can be really difficult to do this, as a parent of a developmentally different toddler. My son time and time again will "surprise" us by doing something today that we had talked about yesterday or the day before. They are there with us - they just don't show it in the ways we're used to!

I love this. It's so true, it's easy to assume things aren't going in because as parents you're not getting the typical acknowledgement or response. But, like you i have been surprised by my son countless times! It's a story i hear from people time and time again 😊

Have you tried Charlotte’s Web hemp oil? I’ve heard so many great stories of how it has dramatically changed their child and now they verbalize and communicate better
