For far too long, the world saw people with intellectual disabilities as nothing more than disabled. They were treated as burdens on society and were isolated in institutions with inhumane conditions. Eunice Kennedy Shriver was a pioneer and an advocate for the equality of those with intellectual disabilities and was able to achieve equal rights and opportunities for them through founding the Special Olympics. She showed the world that they are more like us than different, and by changing the mindset, she was able to also change laws and policies as well, transforming the lives of millions.
