Yea, you read that right. I'm committing to complete abstinence from purchasing new music gear for 365 days starting Jan 1, 2022. My goal is to actually focus more on the music and less on the tools we need to create it.
Before getting into the details of my no gear challenge, I spend some time reflecting on 2021 and talking about how you can set achievable musical goals for 2022.

I’ve finally come to the point of realization where if I don’t appreciate the gear I have now, I won’t appreciate anything that I buy later. It’s better to have a few things to really use and appreciate vs all the things in the world that don’t really have as much significance to you.

Absolutely. It's wild how fast we adapt to the new normal once we get what we longed for and it's onto the next thing. I don't think this should be too hard but I may be feeling differently in a few months. Cheers!

Although I haven't picked up any kind of instrument to play in 14 years, when you talked about focusing on only one goal, and not putting to much on your plate that you loose focus on that goal really made sense for me. The past 2 years have really made everyone re-evaluate on what is important in their life, and made most people change on how they see life. I'm looking forward to new videos!

You're absolutely right, Eric: if there is anything I've learned since finding success with my goals, is to focus on one thing at a time and be as specific as possible in your goal setting. Analyzing songs from a theoretical perspective has really helped me understand the sounds I dig in the tracks I listen to. Would love to see a series of videos of you just dissecting melodic phrases, chord progressions, and songs. Love that you're back and glad to see you putting content to work for you! Keep up the great work!

5 Watt World brought me here! Stoked to see you on the J200 video!! Representing Muskoka ON here.. I've long supported Keith's less-gear-more-music attitude, but like you, I get sucked in to watching gear videos and wasting an embarrassing amount of practice time on random quests for more "stuff." I'M IN!!! ONE YEAR NO GEAR! LET'S DO THIS!!! My current goal is to learn/memorize all the note names on the fretboard. I'm tempted to list more goals, but this is an important one worthy of my time and attention.Thanks for the inspiration.
@minimalistmusician
@minimalistmusician 2 года назад
That's awesome to hear! I'm super grateful to Keith for having me on that one. It was a blast. I don't think it'll be that hard really but it's also the first two weeks so we'll see haha. Honestly, I didn't learn the fretboard properly for way too long and even still I think I could be a bit faster. Check out this video on one system of how to do it. I found it really helpful. I never really liked the tests that ask you what note is at what fret because I like to have a guitar in my lap when doing it. His method is amazing and promotes small practice times on it regularly so don't do more than he suggests and get into whatever else you want to do once you're done. Trust me! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PJddQ6Q0UDo.html&ab_channel=MusicTheoryForGuitar

@@minimalistmusician thanks for the tip! I had begun to dive in to a Truefire course by Howard Morgan that was really helpful. I just need to put in the time with it... and not waste time watching gear videos on RU-vid. LOL. Gonna check out your link. I like the idea of small amounts of time more often. Makes sense.

Hey, just subbed and started following. Great series you have here. I live in Northern Ontario as well. (North Bay, in fact). Did you fix my amp, many years ago? It was a Jet City JCA22H. Happy New Year to you and yours!

I have the gear I need at this time. I want to get back in on guitar and learn more. Been stuck playing bass for years and the guitars are drawing dust. My first love is guitar. Bass is what is needed where I play and I enjoy it too.

Buying no gear is a big goal. I think I already looked at like 100 items but I really like the thought process. Just get better at what you have. I may ‘consider’ trying this out. But not official.
@minimalistmusician
@minimalistmusician 2 года назад
Yeah I'be debated it for a few years and figured putting it out there was a good way to go for accountability. I certainly don't think you have to go this extreme to apply some of these ideas though. The whole thing is to just make sure music is really still the focus of it all. Hope you enjoy it in whatever capacity you chose to embrace it. Cheers

I have a couple of specific gear purchases on my list for 2022 (electronic drum kit as we can’t use the acoustic kit in the new apartment, and a couple of vertical 2x12 cabs), but I’m not going to be buying anything beyond that (and some power tubes). I sold 8 guitars (and gave away 3) in 2021, and I have 7 more, an amp and about 30 pedals I’ll be selling this year, which will more than fund everything.

@@minimalistmusician it really does. I came to the realisation that basically I have 3 basses, 2 acoustics and 4 electrics that I really play, and a couple of others that have sentimental attachment. So why did I have over 30 guitars? 🤣

I think I'm doing okay as a minimalist. I've had my acoustic guitar for 10 years, my P bass for 52 years and my Tele for 54 years. I haven't been so successful avoiding plugins for my DAW, however. I think this is the year that Waves won't make any money from me. Do I get minimalist points for that?
@minimalistmusician
@minimalistmusician 2 года назад
That's awesome! Those pesky plugins are such an easy trap to fall into too! You can get them from the comfort of your own home, immediately and for a pretty easy price haha. I'd say you're doing well than most, including myself over the last few years. Sounds like you've got some real fine instruments too. I think as long as making music is at the forefront that's all that really matters. Happy New Year!

@@minimalistmusician That's a fantastic plan! If you're trolling for video topics at all, I'd be interested to know if you used any interfaces prior to the UA and if so, why you upgraded. Everyone that's serious loves those things and I can't say that I get it. I'm quite happy with my Focusrite 2i2 3rd gen. Then again I'm more of a casual musician than you are. I'd also be interested how much each of your acoustic guitars end up getting used for recording in the real world. I've taken an approach of buying one all-around acoustic (think "Taylor Grand Auditorium") and then expecting to change the tonality in post (mostly with Eq). It works much better with my wife's sense of how many instruments I SHOULD own. I see you're also within a hair's breath of monetization. That's amazing after
@minimalistmusician
@minimalistmusician 2 года назад
@@billfliesdrones4862 I had an Audient ID 14 prior to the UAD and it was fantastic. The focusrite stuff is absoluetly great too and I've used one on occasion. The big deal about the UAD is the zero latency monitoring with their plugins and the ability to either "commit to tape" or just monitor with the plugins. For me it's about getting it to sound as good as I can while playing. I play better when it sounds how I want it to. I also own a sphere modeling mic and the plugins work real nice with the UAD world and give me all kinds of options. The UAD preamp plugins actually bypass the physical pre in the unit and take their place so you get as close to the real thing as possible. I think you could get just as good of a sound in post having used your focusrite. I also love that I can have presets in the UAD. If I find a sound I love I just save it so I can recall it later. As far as the guitars, they're all set up differently. One is standard, one whole step down and one is in high strung so I have all kinds of options for recording. Yeah all guitars sound different for sure but like you say, you can do it in post pretty well. I love the idea of is the UAD stuff worth it for a video idea. Cheers!
