Hey there! I'm the guy that draws the 2D printable minis for Grimdark Future and Age of Fantasy. I actually first got into drawing paper miniatures because of your videos on printable minis for RPGs; it's been crazy to go from simple characters cobbled together for fun to making official drawings for my favorite gaming ruleset. Thanks for setting the ball rolling and getting me this invested in the hobby! And, of course, to anyone that hasn't tried them yet, I highly recommend you try the rules for either Grimdark Future or Age of Fantasy--you can print out free copies of the 2D minis and get playing right away :)
Love your Paperminis. Can't wait for more to come...its such a great way to get started in wargaming and dashout a huge army in a couple of days for nearly free! Please, don't stop drawing :-)
Thanks GOD i encountered OPR. My whole Gaming Group switched from GW to OPR which is just so much better than classic 40K.... that literally saved our Hobby because we got tired of the 40K-Bloat-Rules
Thank you SO much for introducing Grimdark to me. I have tons of Lego Star Wars figures so I use them. I hope you’re doing well and keep up the great content! ^-^
IGOUGO has its weaknesses. Are you familiar with Chain of Command by TFL? It uses command dice using (usually) 5 d6 and the results of the roll determine not only what units you activate but whether or not you get a subsequent round of activations.
@@SPBurt1 yeah, that's about as opposite of GDF as you can get. That's a game for people who prefer crunchy rulesets and it's up to each individual to decide whether all the extra rolls and tables equals extra fun.
I went to my local Warhammer store yesterday and all the singles were $35... I ended up buy a book. A massive book that will give me tons of hours of entertainment, for only $16. I get GW prices their models based on their value in the game but $35 for a single soldier is insane.
@@remusventanus5341 not to mention they will then make the old units worthless to launch new ones. They literally nerf and buff depending on what they need to sell.
This rule set always feels like a great method of operating Apoc 40k. It's clean, it's smooth, it's slightly more abstract and simplified, it's faster than standard rules but it loses some "detail" (crunchiness). But it makes for an awesome Apoc 40k game. It plays so smoothly you can really move a lot of points around and resolve things with plenty of "maneuver" and "tactics". In a lot of ways it what 8th/3rd Apoc should have been. A 750 point game is REALLY fast, and a 4K game is still faster than a 2K 9th edition game.
Do you use the multibasing/small scale rules at the back of the rulebook? I'm looking for a good game system to play 6mm with, and as I love Grimdark Future Firefight, another OPR game would be the best solution. edit: I just realized that you wrote Apoc and not Epic...d'oh!
Found Grimdark Future from your videos. Had been a wargamer for years, but burned out on GW rules churn and poor rules balance, as well as the bloat of the game. GF recaptured my interest, and like you I soon was dropping an embarassing amount of money building up forces. Gotten back into Wargaming after 10 years of just painting stuff for RPGs and making terrain following your tutorials (working on my industrial catwalks right now). Got a non-gamer buddy interested due to the easy nature of the rules, and my wife has played a few games with me and enjoyed herself, which is a testament to how accessible the rules are since normally it wouldn't be her kind of thing. I really love the whole approach of GF and really appreciate you giving the game publicity. I think a lot of people like me who like the 40K and Fantasy models and background but are a bit tired of some of the other aspects of the game like rules bloat or pointless complexity would get a lot out of this system. The games I have played have been reasonably balanced too, and easy to patch if there are balance questions.
I also gave up on 40k because of the poorly designed rules. You might want to check out adventure wargaming and tabletop skirmish games. Five Parsecs from Home is fantastic! Also, Stargrave is also very good.
Can I interest in you in a codex that will get FAQ'ed in a month after it drops and then languish for the next 2 years while the other codexes drop with more powerful units? BTW, you'll have to pay for the sub-faction as well ;)
What I especially like about Grimdark Future is that the "feel" of the GW armies are preserved... My necrons really feel like necrons! Fantastic ruleset.
I would even argue that the armies feel *more* like themselves, looking over the Alien Hive rules and comparing to the latest Tyranid codex... I can absolutely see myself running a pure melee swarm in GF, without feeling like I am hobbling myself in the process.
Great introduction to the rules of Grimdark Future, and while familiar with them I found the visual Army Building section very helpful to solidify the rules for me. I always get tripped up with the "Buy X" headers. Also I have to agree on the sentiment for it helping Games Workshop sell models. If it wasn't for Grimdark Future, I would never have bought a starter set of miniatures.
This video is doing the trick, over on the OPR discord server we've just seen a lot of new folks join citing this video. Hope my Age of Fantasy Regiments video series can do the same.
Thanks for the vid. Totally Agreed with what you said at the end. Tried to get into 40k, loved the models, but with every handbook, codex and new miniature coming out every month...I couldn't keep up with the cost or layers of additional rules. OPR is a great way to get people into the hobby with it's simplicity and availability. With the current sate of affairs, would love to see you post some A.I. battle reports (another perk of OPR).
Funnily enough, this was what I originally assumed 40k would play like when I first learned of its existence. Imagine my surprise when I looked at the *actual* 40k rules. 😂 OPR is definitely for me. I just hope I can find a group to play. 😅
Between your sci-fi terrain crafting videos, and this grim dark future one page rule war game tutorial, I am finally inspired to branch out from fantasy and sci-fi RPGs to some entry level war games. Thanks Bill 🤘💀🤘
4 major selling points 1. Doesnt take all day to play 2. Take what ever minis you want. No detachment memes 3. Skaven and dorfs are in it as well as some mantic stuff 4. Alternating activations
What a great video. I've been wanting to get my kids into Warhammer tabletop, but the rules can be pretty convoluted. This will simplify things so a 9 year old can grasp it more easily. Thanks!
Thank you, awesome rules ! Easy but efficient. Just dont like Line of sight rule, i would be more realistic to consider you can jusk kill the minis you see. If you see 3 minis in a unit of 10, you can kill a maximum of 3 minis,
New gamer here that occasionally bribes the wife into playing with me. We both felt the GW mechanics were too complicated for your average/new player. This would work much better. Hell, off your description of combat alone, I feel like I could pick up my models and play a round or 2. That is amazing. Also, thanks for the heads up about the skirmish version. Model collection is still in it's infancy (soul war starter set).
@@paulyg405 The full rule book has a bunch of optional rules that give the game a bit more granularity. Things like suppression fire and over watch. Might be worth checking out
@@paulyg405 I think Eugen means that OPR have army lists that can be used for, or likely inspired by, Mantic models. I know the GF Dwarf Guilds were inspired by Mantic's Forge Fathers...
Given how broken primaris are I like this one a lot at least at first glance oh, I'll have to give it a try hopefully all the factions are supported, maybe I can switch over to this system until 40K gets its head out of its ass
Not only is every GW faction you can think of catered for, it also covers even _more_ factions - for Grimdark Future alone, there are the Dwarf Guilds, _two_ lots of space rats (Ratmen Clans and the Vile Rattus Cult), and the human Feudal Guard. And if you have models that you want to create your _own_ rules for, as Wylock points out, Tier 1 patrons get access to the points calculator which lets you stat up any model or unit you like...
gamer of 20+ years now, and was bored with the constant updating and buying rules, so went into grimdark future and loving it. Not a patreon guy myself, so happy they are starting to sell the full rulebooks over at wargamevault! very cheap as well!
To be honest this seems more interesting than 40k. I mean I never gotten to 40k because of how long a game took, how many rolls there are to do anything and that because it's a "I go U go" system the waiting takes ages. But this seems to have the cool aspects of 40k (high customization of forces) combined with rules that make the game fast and enjoyable insted of a waiting simulator.
Alright! You totally sold me. I've never played a wargame and I don't know why this came across my dash but I'm glad it did. Im just too broke for a toy chest full of models 🤣
Awesome! Army building always trips me up and now I feel like I "get it" better. My friend and I did play a game of GDF:FF around the end of last year and thoroughly enjoyed it. Then things hit the fan and now it's just a waiting game....
Wyloch's Armory makes sense. Doing little house rules is probably one of the best parts of tabletop games. If you think something is a bit off or kind of dumb, you can just change it.
WOW! Thanks Wylock. I had quit 40k because I just couldn't compete anymore. Tired of dumping hundreds of dollars into GW to stay relevant. This could bring new life to my minis.
I can actually get into a sci-fi based war game. I've been wanting to play Warhammer because its an interesting universe, but the products from GW are too expensive and their dislike of using proxy models turned me away. This is the game for me!
So does this game have it's own version of the Imperial Guard? I have a few units of Cadians I still need to assemble and paint, but all of the GW books are so expensive and there is no one I know who plays so I just usually build terrain.
Yes it does! Just head to their website and click the Army Books....you will see the Human Defense Force list....the names are clear analogs of the GW model names. ;-)
I have an almost complete army of space marines..... But i realized i also have a shit ton of halo mega construx figures, covenant and unsc. Dude i can make a halo tabletop battle lol.
Been planning to get into 40K 9th with my oldest son. Working on tau safari collecting box. This may be a better way to go.. have you tried the smaller points games on a smaller board?
This has been super helpful, thank you! One question regarding army building - Is there no force organization or number of unit min/max caps? I haven't been able to find anything regarding that.
there is no Force Organization/Detachment rules as long as you and your opponent make lists from the same point total it should be fairly balanced make an army of lots of un-upgraded infantry? you will have lots of activations/firepower but not a lot of staying power to hold objectives long term since your force is made of one wound wimps make an army of hyper specialized elite units? well they will last longer and hit harder but you will generally have a tougher time claiming objectives that were taken ahead of you because of your limited number of units to contest My personal experience is to try to at least have a hero/caster or combo of the two if available and then to build what you think is a good balanced force that allows for lethality and objective coverage. you cant be both but you can get close and then let the dice decide the rest
I was wondering if you have dabbled into the Grimdark Future: Firefight expansion... specifically, the Gang Wars (Necromunda style). I'd love to see a similar video for that. You explain things in a way that is very easy to understand for someone with minimal experience. Thank you!!!
Wow! Thanks for the tutorial, comprehensible, fast a and fun! I have two friends who don’t really play too much minute games if any at all, so I think theis simpler game might be for them. (One never played TTGs and one is a rules lawyer but only plays DND) i myself find current WH bit too overwhelming so this is a good idea. Plus GW controversies would make me personally feel more guilty with normal WH.
I know this is an older video but I just got into painting miniatures and since WH is way too expensive I print my own minis with a resin printer. I wanted to play tabletop games but WH has become too expensive and complicated. Well apparently OPR has answered that problem and you showed how the game is played - so thank you. Sub'd and liked.
Thank you for this tutorial. From the bullet points to the FAQ - everything was evenly paced and concise. I’m a visual learner and your use of graphics was a HUGE help - especially for a war gaming newb. Subscribed!
This is basically how my friends and I played even with 40K rules back in 3rd ed, even with the activation portion since we thought it was boring to sit around and wait all day in big battles. This is great.
I was just looking at my thousand and thousands of points of space marines and nids and having given up on 40K 3+ editions ago today. Maybe need to give these a try with my youngest.
I have started adapting battle of macragge to grimdark future. Initial tests were fun but I needed to modify the missions more than just changing stats due to some of the rule differences.
Thanks to you using this ruleset on your channel, I recently gave grimdark a try ( because as a non-SM player the current situation has left me REALLY unhappy with 40k 9th edition and the OP Marine-tide) it's fun and quick to pick up and I've been spreading the word to other upset/disenfranchised 40k players to try grimdark as well
Ive been thinking about getting into warhammer 40k but the initial cost has been a BIG part of holding me back, not to mention the extensive rules! Im definitely going to dive in now! Warhammer +RC's....rip wallet lol
Great tutorial, I've really enjoyed it. Just some questions though: 1) You showed the army list of the Battle Brothers, but I can't see any sort of Chaplain. Is he in some sort of "army specific list"/Codex like file? 2) I've read elsewhere that there are advanced rules. Do you think they are as good as the basic ones? And what do they add to the game? 3) I can't grasp the advantage of not striking back when hit in melee. I mean, if I stand still and suffer the attacks from the enemy, I am automatically the one losing the melee, hence I'm the only one testing for Morale. Is there something I am missing?
1) I think the intent is that you use a Captain but kit him out using the upgrade tables below to match, as close as you can. 2) I have never used the advanced rules. 3) your unit A wants to charge enemy unit B at some point this round. But, enemy unit C charges unit A before they get the chance....but A still really wants to throw full strength at B and not be hitting on 6s.....so A decides to not strike back at C and try to tough it out.
Kids and I love 8th edition 40k. But, games take a while, they hate 9th, things get more and more complicated. So far,, we've just gone back to playing 8th, but I'd like to use my models that have been made illegal, and my models that didn't exist until 9th edition, and to finish a decent sized game rather than abandon it when the kids have to go to bed. This might be our solution, so glad I discovered this somehow.... no, seriously you've been doing this for awhile and it hasn't shown up in my feed or general searches until I started looking into some skirmish games and this "one page rules" was mentioned so I searched. This video gives me everything I need to make a decision on this, and since it's free it also won't be buyers remorse if there's something I can't stand (doubtful) or my picky kids refuse to play it (possible). The presentation seems like it will minimize page flipping ad well. My concern is being broke right now the unit builder may have to wait, lol. But then I'll finally be able to pick up those Mantic ForgeFathers and use them as Squats!
Rockin. No need for the unit builder, the existing lists are pretty well balanced as-is. Also, I have a bunch of full battle reports in my playlists, in case you didn't see them...
When you consider the history of GW, they started the exact same way. Standing on the shoulders of the giant that was Gary Gygax and D&D. So it's only fitting that another may spring forward in the same fashion.
If I played this, I'd copy the rules and change the names back to their real ones. I just cannot help but cringe at hearing Boltguns and Lasguns being called "assault rifles," and Ogryns being called "Ogres." (the generic names they have are understandable, but absolutely terrible!) Even though I love 40k's weirdness and narrative focus, this does look quite good for people who don't want to bother with the complex rules, and I can imagine it doesn't have all the power creep and BS primaris marine rules. I'll stay with 40k, but this seems really good.
I'm going to give these rules a try, they look great, thanks for the work to explain it all! Also at 18:30 you replace a model with a straight up plasma gun, but Table A is a unit leader style upgrades and attachments are meant to be combi-weapons on a sergeant, not a regular gun. Just worth noting for clearing up confusion of visuals.
awesome video. makes me wish i had more people to try and play this game with. I played 40k though 8th edition (dark eldar mainly) and that edition and 9th so far have been utterly cruel and brutal to my faction. So playing a fun, easy, balanced game would be pretty sweet. I built a papercraft sisters of battle army using your methods and guides as well, and frankly i've like the GDF battle reports you've done. hopefully this vid gets more people to play irl or on TTS, would be sweet to play.
I mainly paint for display. I tried 40k, two years ago, with my son. We both agreed it was damn snoozefest. I recently started buying the new Black Templars and 40k Orks, because I like the painting aspect. I really wanted to play, then I found OPR...holy crap! I can't wait to get back into it =D
Thank you so much for introducing me to Grimdark. I hope you read this at some point. I found you're channel before you hung up your shirt but only started playing Grimdark recently as my kids couldn't stand the long warhammer game times :) Anyway rest up and maybe one day we will see you again. Until then to quote the man ... make things and play games :D
Man this video should be on the front page of OPR! It helped so much with reading the lists and understanding the greatness of this system. As well as having a basic reference to come back to.
Well this is the free rules that give the most basic form of play and is also 3 years old and things have changed. Anyway the full rules are 5 bucks and you get all updates for free for life. The full rules I think 2 dozen or more mods to rules you can add as many or view as you wish to change how the game runs or even what type of missions you will have. But hey.
Ôh boy. I just cant decide how to start Grim Dark Future. Since i dont have any 40k Models anymore, i have to decide which army i want to play and which models i want to use. Battle Brothers maybe. There are a lot of used old space marines on ebay. Or maybe something less elite like human defence force. Battle Sisters are also interessting :D ARGH and what should i buy first? Should i plan an all out 4k army or start smaller und buy 1000 points first. I. Cant. Decide!
I feel like the rules for this system were made by player(s) who love shooty armies and hate melee armies. The fact that you are not locked into combat until it is completely resolved (ie multi-turn combats) means that Melee armies are in a severe disadvantage. This means that they can be targeted after their charges. Is it more realistic? It's a 50/50. You could in real-life shoot into a melee (not that those happen too often in modern warfare) but you'd run the risk of shooting friendlies.
@@WylochsArmory The melee works fine...just not for melee themed armies. It's a system that highly favors the stand and shoot army. It's a shame that OPR is modelled after more modern 40k like 9th Edition, when 3rd edition rule set gave a meatier spread of melee combats with sweeping advances and Initiative order strike orders. The game has been unbalanced towards shoot armies ever since the end of 3rd Edition
A “breath of fresh air” - I got the Kill Team Starter set a while back after many years of not playing 40k and after trying to come to terms with the Rule Book, realised that likely 90% of play-time would be spent consulting and interpreting the overly complicated “Rules”. Not good d for a fast paced skirmish game. - OPR is exactly what is needed for a quick-paced skirmish game - few and simple “rules of engagement” that don’t need to be minutely referenced at every turn. Games Workshop should take notice and drastically slim down their skirmish targeted rules. Well done 👍
I'm just starting OPR Grimdark future, I watched this video, read the rules, play several games, and now come back again to this video to check what I missed (mainly moral tests...)
Okay wow I got into warhammer40k lore this year May 2022. I ended up loving Tyranids. I considered getting the Commanders edition for necrons/space marines. The conbat patrol and start collecting boxes for tyranids And would figure out what else to add for necrons and space marines Was going to build up about 1000 points for all 3 factions so i could have buddies over to play and choose between the three factions Would eventually build up the tyranids to 3000 points worth for mix and matching for when i would go to the local game store. HOWEVER. By the time i was getting caught up on base rules and more importantly Tyranid rules using Wahapedia i found the FAQ/errata that changed things. Then shortly after the necron points changed. Thats when i read how they are constantly tweaking rules and its near impossible to keep up with. I gave up the idea and just doubled down on battletech/alphastrike which i had started buying Your video and rules have significantly reinvigorated my desire to get some wh40k models and can run even smoother games with my friends at my place!
Kudos very well made video, thank you bro now my old Mage Knight collection gets life back and be represented amongst the figures that can be used in the Battlefield. Love the figure agnostic position of OPR. This makes formation based battles so much easier and faster gameplay. Now to introduce to my youth group.
I have 2 questions. First, if a model or unit has 2 or more weapon types, say, Battle Brothers' support bike, which has 1 heavy flamethrower, 1 twin heavy rifle and one 1 heavy pistol, do you chose one attacking weapon or do you blast half the enemy forces, all guns blazing, with that one unit? Second, similar to the first: If you activate a psychic unit and chose to cast a spell, does that model also get to attack during this activation, or is that it for the model?
Have you tried the Firefight variant of the game? I prefer lower models count (I don't have the time to paint big armies anyway nor the money to buy them xD)
great that there are many game systems to choose from! Based on the couple of games of 9th ed. Warhammer 40k I've played with kids, I actually think that system is easier than this Grimdark Future ruleset. As long as one sticks to only the core rules and uses "Power Level", one gets away without the seemingly fairly complex army list building with points, coded upgrade letters etc this Grimdark Future uses. Not saying one is better than the other, just saying that for me, I find the core rules and power level system of Warhammer an easier system than this one, and thus even more suitable for casual players. But to each their own, of course, and variety of choices is always a good thing.
@@WylochsArmory I am not. In the core rules of 40k, stratagems are not included. And for that , I am very grateful, because the myriad of stratagems and the command points system seems very complex and virtually impossible to grasp for kids / casual players. Nor are there any rules for cover and terrain in the core rules, another part of 40k which otherwise seem VERY complex (the core rules gets away with "if you see the target, you can shoot. otherwise, you cannot shoot", which again is pleasantly simple (if also ridiculously unrealistic).
God this is what I’ve wanted for 40k for so long. The i go, u wait for an hour and watch your army get decimated then u go, i watch my army get decimated is so repetitive and old and is just a perfect recipe for building meta armies. Kill team and apocalypse play with alternating activations so idk why regular 40k cant either. Im sick of the excuse of “40k will lose it’s identity if they switch the turn system” because it’s outdated as hell and 40k is not famous for it’s rules and mechanics. It’s famous for it’s cool models and deep lore. So why would you want to play a game where you spend hours assembling and painting your miniatures only to see them get wiped out turn 1 because you lost initiative and your army just waits patiently as they’re getting slaughtered. Like keep the phases but have each player take turns activating during each phase if you still wanna keep 40k’s original rule set. The alternating activations works for the fight phase idk why it wouldn’t work for the shooting phase? Star wars legion and armada work so well with alternating activations because there’s consequences for you movement and what you shoot at instead of “i can move my whole army and shoot at whatever i want because even if my unit fails to kill the target another one will just wipe it out without any threat of retaliation. 40k needs that ability to shoot back so u have to actually prioritize your anti armor and what you’re shooting at. If my tank fumbles all his guns, it’s no biggie because i have a dreadnought and devastators that can still hit him.
I've heard OPR mentioned, or at last alternate 40k rules... But this was a really simple explanation that's sparking my interest. I've been a D&D player for several years, and this simplified combat really feels more like how TTRPGs play, with units taking turns and the rules feeling a bit more fair and easy to run. I could see this being really fantastic for narrative games. and... I see there's a Killteam equivalent too that's much easier to use. That's on my list of things to try right now. As soon as I'm done this next terrain piece.
