Just picked up this amp, SOUNDS PHENOMENAL. I bought a set of JBL speakers to go with it. At the time, the JBL's were set up on a separate Denon amp. Gotta say, this thing sounds just as good for about half the price!

Bought mine at Frys Electronics for $168. (+ tax) to use as a 2 channel set up with my vintage Pioneer turntable. After unboxing the Onkyo, I realized that this thing was basically a toy. No heft or weight to it whatsoever and then after hooking it up I realized that it also sounded like a toy. Thankfully, I saved the receipt and original box and couldn't return it to Frys fast enough! I have a 40 year old Yamaha CR-620 receiver that I took down to a real stereo shop, had it tuned up and is now proudly displayed in my living room. The 40 year old Yamaha sounds a thousand times better than the Onkyo light weight toy ! I have a feeling that most of today's audio equipment is Chinese made, lightweight junk, just like the Onkyo.

Hi Peter, We test all of our amplifiers at 6ohm, but using 8ohms is no problem at all.Using 120W @ 8ohm speakers is fine realistically the amp will put out between 80-100w at an 8 ohm load, so happy days !

Hi mpj1969, thanks for your inquiry. Please note that the A / B outputs do not provide special support for bi-wiring - i.e. they output the same, complete range of frequencies and do not split between low/high freqs.
@OnkyoEU
@OnkyoEU 12 лет назад
Hi, you could do bi-wiring by using A+B mode (manual page EN-19), e.g. connecting your L woofer to A (L), your R woofer to A (R), L tweeter to B (L) and L tweeter to B (R). Nethertheless please keep in mind that the advantages of bi-wiring/bi-amping depend on the amp + cables + speakers. To actually clearly "hear a difference" in audio quality, all of these components usually have to tend to high end (and being much more expensive).
@OnkyoEU
@OnkyoEU 11 лет назад
Hi, you could output the audio signal via the pre-outs, but then you will need an external amplifier. If you are looking for an amp that supports the integration of an external equalizer, the A-9070 could do the job. The A-9070 supports different usage modse (e.g. PreAmp, Split Mode, etc). Your configuration with A-9070 Split mode could look like this: Audio Signal (CD, Tuner etc.) -> A-9070 preamp stage -> preout to EQ -> back to A-9070 / amplifier stage -> speakers.

Hi, the TX-8050 offers a wide range of analogue inputs (incl. a phono stage) for compability with existing analogue equipment, but has a strong focus on digital connectivity (network, TV via digital in, USB etc). If the phono stage does not suit your needs, there are two ways to go from here: selecting a phono cartridge that the manufacturer recommends very high capacitance loading for (1st choice?), or evaluating a separate, dedicated phono stage that will suit your needs. Thanks for asking!

@MADDOX921 Hi, you will need to make sure that you are running a DLNA/UPnP server software on your device (Mac, iPhone, iPad, etc). While we cannot recommend any specific sofware, we did some quick tests with e.g. iMediaShare on iPhone/iPad which worked as expeced. Please also note that the TX-NR1009 does only support playback of music over network (e.g. no streaming of videos, or display of pictures).
@OnkyoEU
@OnkyoEU 11 лет назад
Hi, not sure which Andi/Anton you are talking about - but you could connect your TX-8050 using the following ways to your computer: Streaming via DLNA from PC to TX-8050 (via Network - using Windows Media Player or other software), connecting to digital (opt/coax) or using the analog inputs. Streaming / Digital IN would obviously be the preferred solutions.
@OnkyoEU

Yes, your iPhone will communicate via WiFi -> wireless router -> LAN -> with your TX-8050. So no need for the separate USB dongle in this case.

I have a TX8050. For anyone with a problem using the NET or USB selections, where it doesn't connect to any selected Internet radio station or connect to and play from a plugged in USB thumb drive with music files on it, here is the solution: Turn off the receiver. Unplug the AC cord from the wall outlet. Wait 5 seconds and plug cord back in. Turn on receiver. Try connecting to Network radio station or USB thumb drive again. It should work this time because by unplugging and replugging the AC cord you have rebooted the computer inside the Onkyo. This works for me everytime. I am running original firmware that came with the Onkyo with no updates. Keep in mind that some internet radio stations are not active 24/7 and that some will become inactive and stop broadcasting. But if no station you try to select plays try this solution above. Onkyo does not mention this in their owner's manual.

Hi, the subwoofer preout is being used for the main zone - as most users have their "full" setup incl. sub in the main listening room, and using a 2nd pair of speakers as additional audio output in another room...
@OnkyoEU

You do not need the USB wifi dongle in case you have a WiFi router / WiFi access point installed: the Android phone/tablet > connects via WiFi to > WiFi Router/AP -> connects via cable/Ethernet > TX-8050 . Have a nice evening.

Hi, it is always difficult to compare the sound quality of devices - without doing a listening test. And even if components sound similiar with one set of speakers, they might sound a bit different with another set of speakers. Audio quality can be very subjective. If you are "expecting" a certain sound quality / audio characteristics, please try to do a listening test - ideally with your preferred speakers!

@soufieneTUN Hi, we just had a look at the specs at bowers-wilkins.co.uk/Speakers/Home_Audio/600_Series/685.html - they definitely look fine :) Regarding other models, the TX-8050 is currently the only network stereo receiver model. But you could e.g. combine separate components, like the network tuner T-4070 with an amplifier like A-9070 / A-9000R or even P3000R + M-5000R, if required (but then you might want to look for larger loudspeaker model, too).

@OnkyoEU
@OnkyoEU 8 лет назад
+james flores Hi, the following information might answer your question: When you connect one set of speakers to either SPEAKERS A or SPEAKERS B terminal posts, or when you connect two sets of speakers to both speaker terminal posts and output sound only from either speaker set, use speakers whose impedance is 4 to 16 Ω, and set the speaker impedance setting on the receiver to 4 or 6 Ω . When the impedance of the speaker to be used is less than 6 Ω, set the speaker impedance to 4 Ω. When you connect speakers to both SPEAKERS A and SPEAKERS B terminal posts and output sound from both speaker sets simultaneously, use speakers whose impedance is 8 to 16 Ω. Set the speaker impedance setting on the receiver to 4 Ω. Thanks for asking!

Hi OnkyoEU, I want to purchase a receiver unit to play records. I just bought a Dual 1229Q turntable and wanted to make sure this would work well with the Onkyo 8050. I read reviews and some people said the sound was not that great for the phono input since Onkyo didn't seem to spend too much time or effort on the phono function. I'm not an audiophile, but I will notice hissing or stuff of that nature, so I'd like a good phono option. Do you have any videos or words of wisdom about this?

When playing internet radio, does the 'Artist' and 'Song Title' scroll on the display and smartphone app?
@OnkyoEU
@OnkyoEU 9 лет назад
Hi, this often depends on the information provided by the internet service/radio. E.g. using AUPEO! and other services, artist/title information will be displayed (including scrolling on display/app). Other radio stations just display generic information (e.g. radio station name + slogan) but no details on the currently played song - while making this information available via their e.g. twitter feed. So there is no fixed rule regarding these kind of details...

We are afraid that as of July 20th, 2017 Spotify has ceased function on certain 2011 model year Onkyo network receivers including the TX-8050. Spotify has notified registered users of this change. As an alternative, we recommend - connecting a media player via digital or RCA inputs (if available) - using Google ChromeCast - or any third party Bluetooth device for streaming Spotify to your Onkyo AV receiver. How can i connect a equalizer into this receiver=?
@OnkyoEU
@OnkyoEU 10 лет назад
Hi, only via one of the line inputs - e.g. there is no split pre/main configuration, where you can output the line level signal from the TX-8050 to an equalizer, then connecting the line level out of the equalizer to the line level in of TX-8050 again to have it amplified and routed to the speakers - this will not work. You can either use the TX-8050 as a pre-amplifier -> equalizer -> power amp, or using another device as pre-amplifier -> equalizer -> TX-8050 as power amp.

Hi, the TX-8050 has digital (optical and coax) and analog inputs, if you would like to connect your computer directly. Va GunTrader Hi again - correct, the easiest type of connection should be an optical connection from the computer to OPTICAL 1 (GAME) of the TX-8050. Most computers offer an optical digital output (coxial digital outputs are less common there). This setup is probably easier to handle than configuring thehome network / DLNA server / media streaming - as you basically just have to plugin the optical cable on both sides :-) But please verify first that your PC has / supports a digital optical audio output.

+Kathleen Ramirez There are two ways to use DLNA/WMP: One is to use your laptop as a music server (Page En-31), it "shares" your library on your laptop with other devices on the network (e.g TX-8050). The other way is to use Remote Playback ("Play to"), where WMP streams a selected song/playlist to a specific device (e.g. TX-8050) - page En-32 in the manual. Could you try both setups? Any of those will work. Please do not use PHONO in as this has some special audio signal treatment for turntables.

I'm trying to connect the app to the this receiver. Typical of this stuff, I get all these cute instructions to do this and that, select the 'blue tooth (icon) button. There isn't one. pass word. They conveniently tell you it's to be found 'here' on a diagram of some generic equipment that resembles neither my receiver, my router.... It is easier that this nonsense is happening on my phone where I have a keypad instead ........a........b...... The years roll on and none of this nonsense ever seems to work any better. Well, it sounds pretty good. So I guess it's a receiver, amp for my CD player, and science fiction.... I'd love to see a business model where for every hour the customer tries connecting and fails, the company has to refund $100 in cash. I have no doubt they'd sort bonehead mistakes, the dog falling asleep on the remote...and very quickly sort annoying vague 20 step instructions written in vague passive language. But thanks for the nice video I'll try phone support tomorrow.

Anyone who thinks this Onkyo sounds good has never heard a real stereo system.
