In short: if you have issues with your Onkyo AVR and PS5 for VRR or any VRR issues with Onkyo you “may” be able to resolve them by forcing your AVR to 8K Enhanced or Standard mode. Even if you don’t have an 8K TV.

8k mode means HDMI 2.1 and 8k/60 or 4k/120(thus unlocking vrr) 4k enhanced mode is HDMI 2.0 protocol and 4k/60

I have a question btw: do you experience random black screens during gameplay? Like from switching to hdr but without doing anything? I also have LG oled and havn't had this problem with Denon but Onkyo seems to have some handshake problem with hdmi at random times.

Yes I have and I think I know the issue. There is some oddities going with how Onkyo has implemented CEC. If you have multiple devices with CEC enabled I have noticed this issue where the screen goes black for a few moments and then it comes back. Almost like it wanted to switch inputs but then changed its mind. This issue has plagued me for the lifetime that I owned the RZ50. I think I finally got it resolved but it involved me turning off CEC on all my devices and then enabling it one by one until I found the device that RZ50 was having issues with. Turned out to by my Firestick. But I don’t know if it’s the Firestick bad implementation or the RZ50 or both. My recommendation would be to turn off CEC on everything and then enable it one by one on each device until you replicate the issue. At least that worked for me

@@morgande That's a great concept, thank you, I'll give it a try through the weekend!

This is completely normal. reason 8k mode is unselected and disabled is because a lot of older hdmi tvs won’t even work or show a picture if the 8k bandwidth is enabled. To avoid headaches for everyone they make it selectable. A lot of tvs do this to so older hdmi devices will work out the box.

Glad I found this video. I struggling to figure it out why VRR will not work because it worked when I connected my PS5 to the TV. I have to select 8k Enhanced in order to get VRR to work with my PS5 and Samsung S90C TV. 120hz, HDR, AALM and VRR work great on the RZ50 receiver. I don't see any different when connected the PS5 straight to the TV HDMI vs RZ50 receiver. Framerate felt the same. I preferred to connect my PS5 to the receiver instead of the TV because I can select DTS instead of Dolby/ATMOS sound.

Yeah sadly DTS won’t play through so you have to go through the receiver. I prefer to go through the receiver for the OSD when changing volume. Sadly CEC issues with this Onkyo AVR are now causing me a lot of issues. Sometimes the AVR partially “freezes”. The setup screen never comes up. And the Onkyo App/website won’t respond. The only way I can fix the issue is to restart the AVR. This is CEC issue and I can’t seem to figure out why. It’s very annoying

I had to buy all new hdmi cables that were 40-48gbs for my RZ50 to play right with my Sony X700 UHD player.

i have an rz50 also but paired with xbox series x, in order for me to be able to even play at 4k@120hz i had to have 8k enhanced set, the moment i drop it any lower it will drop down to 4k@60hz. I believe it's related to hdmi bandwidth, so 4k@120hz is similar amount of data transmit as 8k@60hz. It's recommended to run with a higher bit rate certified hdmi cable also, i'm not sure how much difference that makes but you might as well.

This didn't solve my problem. Does it have to do with me having main+sub out active? (2nd output)

You are lucky. I cant get anything other than 1080p with the ps5. Because my tv needs hdmi enhaced enabled to support 4k ps5 content. But my onkyo doesn't handshake hdcp. So i cant enable it. Ergo. I cant use ps5 att all with the receiver

Looks like the Onkyo Programmers suck. You found it. I had an issue like this on mine but I use a JVC 10k$ receiver. I never try what you did and now it worked.

Great find. Solved my problems. Once enabled the 4k enhanced signal opened up vrr on the ps5. Good job finding and posting !

so how has the TX-RZ50 been since you uploaded this? No issues with HDMI anymore?
@morgande

RZ50 has been mostly trouble free. No HDMI issues for sure. There was a CEC issue I had with an Amazon Firestick but once I turned off CEC that went away. I ran into a weird glitch forcing me to hard reboot by killing power once. Not sure what happened. But she’s been behaving well all-in-all

hello mr morgan I am a Görkem television TCL 75'' c745 onkyo rz50 user from Istanbul. I had the same problem yesterday, the device probably self-destructed after connecting to PS5 :) Most likely the hdmi card is burned. Unfortunately, I had an issue after connecting the PS5 and I'm sorry about that. Don't worry, it's not something unique to you. I'm writing from 6400 miles away, brother. I'm sorry to experience the same feelings. Fck Onkyo :)

Yeah well...4K enhanced is (and always was) the name for normal 4K at up to 60Hz. 8K is the HDMI 2.1 spec.
@morgande

4K enhanced is the name for 4k @ 120hz. HDMI 2.1 is not inherently tied to 8k
@rolandrohde
@rolandrohde 5 месяцев назад
@@morgande Nope. 4K enhanced was always the official name for 4K60 in AVRs. It's essentially a label for "18Gbit/s"
@morgande
@morgande 5 месяцев назад
@@rolandrohde take it up with Onkyo. Their documentation specifies 4K enhanced for 4k@120 and doesn’t mention anything about VRR being tied to 8k. This video was all about VRR which has nothing to do with resolution. You’re wrong on all possible counts. support.onkyousa.com/hc/en-us/articles/9450592178580-TX-RZ50-HDMI-4K-8K-Signal-Format

@@morgande this isn't tied to Onkyo, it's simply HDMI Specs. The HDMI group made a right mess when they decided that 2.1 was going to be "mix and match", thus leading to confusing nomenclature. It's like the AppleTV having some HDMI 2.1 features, but only theoretically and on paper. It's a mess.
@rolandrohde

@@morgande Btw...just checked the manual for my RZ70 and it clearly states that 4K Enhanced is just 4K60 and 18Gbit/s
