What a great topic to talk about! The fact of the pod is that a whodunnit is a coloquial term for why dunnit. The mother/daughter body swap movie is Freaky Friday. Austin no longer a cinephile in my eyes. 😂

I’ve been told that only two stories exist, 1) man (or woman) goes on a journey and 2) stranger comes to town. I think it’s mostly true if you don’t try to apply it too literally.

"Teeters my totter" is a brilliant phrase. At its core, it means joy that comes from something outside yourself (because you can't ride a teeter-totter alone). So it can just mean "this brings me joy" OR it can specifically mean that it was an equal and opposite force that brought you joy -- a differing opinion -- meaning "a friendly debate about our different opinions brought me joy." It could also be mean that something annoyed you. I thought at first this would be an erroneous use, but imagine you want to get off the teeter-totter and your counterpart refuses to let you off gently.

So true! Naruto, Star Wars, Dune, Terminator are a kid trying to find his way in the world. Lord of the Rings, Nightmare on Elmstreet, Pokemon, Saving Private Ryan are a group of friends trying to save the day from an evil force. They are all the same stories over and over with small details changed.

I agree that those are almost all of the fantasy stories, especially those published originally in English, but as a reader from a non-english speaking country who mostly reads literary fiction not in English, I've read a lot of stories that don't fit those categories. One example is "Old Masters" by Thomas Bernhard which is a novel written as a lot of intertwining rambles about the life and opinions of a character through the lens of another character, the book on the surface seems like one big confusing ramble of art criticism but in between the lines you see the observed character's development or, should I say, discovery. That's why I'm against this types of writing manuals, they try to fit every story in a box in a very reductionist way and end up influencing new authors to write the same thing inside the same boxes they create,. I'm not saying that the stories written that way end up being bad but there is alot more to be said in a lot more ways to tell. Nice video though, love the channel.

I recently discovered you guys and I'm really enjoying your stuff, If you're trying to read more Indie books, might I suggest Gunmetal Gods. It's my favorite indie series of all time (the fourth novel just got released) and it's like a middle eastern game of thrones but with Lovecraftian Monsters mucking about. And it has some of the best covers of all time, hope you consider adding it to your never ending tbr

Great Discussion! I've read save the cat writes a novel and also the original save the cat (for screenplay), there's also a new version save the cat writes a ya novel but I haven't gotten my hands on it yet, but I'm curious about what in the writer's view differs so much - between novel and ya novel - that it's worth a whole new book. It was interesting hearing a bit of your opinion on musicals, I think I'll go check that episode you mentioned, I really don't like musicals xD the singing completely shatters my attention on the story. I'm not a big romance reader but Pride and Prejudice is on my top 10, if you want to check something on tv I recommend Something in the Rain, it's a Korean show great soundtrack, relaxed vibe, modern day simple and beautiful story :)

@@2ToRamble It’s a very practical book just like the one for novels, I read it out of curiosity for the original (screenplays aren’t really my thing), it’s a much smaller book than save the cat writes a novel. I think it might ruin movies for some people because as things happen you won’t be able to not see the beats 😅 it kind of changes how you receive the stories. I’m curious about the version for YA novels !

Each time I see someone claiming there is just X number of stories, I am thrown into a fit of anger. This has been so damaging for me as a writer. Stories are similar because they all are based in reality, and reality tends to work in the same ways. Trying to find those X stories is the biggest waste of time.
