Taken from the "Jubilee: Live at Wolf Trap" performance and found on the album "Come On, Come On".
Mary Chapin Carpenter was born Feb. 21, 1958, in Princeton, N.J. Her father was an executive for Life magazine, and she spent part of her early life living in Japan. She grew up with a love of contemporary pop hits, although her mother's Woody Guthrie and Judy Collins records gave her some interest in country/folk music. She spent her time at home with her guitar, and her father encouraged her to perform at talent nights.
Enrolling in Brown University, Carpenter earned a degree in American civilization. Between college years she would play local bars and clubs in the Washington, DC area. By 1986, she was a local star, winning five Washington Area Music Awards. She released her 1987 debut "Hometown Girl", produced by guitarist/producer John Jennings.
She returns to Washington almost every summer to perform at the popular outdoor venue Wolftrap.
Only a Dream lyrics:
I can recall the sound of the wind
As it blew throught the trees and the trees would bend
I can recall the smell of the rain
On a hot summer night
Coming through the screen
I'd crawl in your bed when the lightning flashed
And I'd still be there when the storm had passed
Dead to the world, to the morning cast
Its light all around your room
We lived on a street where the tall elm shade
Was as green as the grass and as cool as a blade
That you held in your teeth as we lay on our backs
Staring up at the blue and the blue stared back
I used to believe we were just like those trees
We'd grown just as tall and as proud as we pleased
With our feet on the ground and our arms in the breeze
Under a sheltering sky
Twirl me about, and twirl me around
Let me grow dizzy and fall to the ground
And when I look up at you looking down,
Say it was only a dream
A big truck was parked in the drive one day
They wrapped us in paper and moved us away
Your room was no longer next door to mine
And this kid sister thing was old by that time
But oh how our dreams went bump in the night
And the voices downstairs getting into a fight
And the next day a silence you could cut with a knife
And feel like a blade at your throat
Twirl me about and twirl me around
Let me grow dizzy and fall to the ground
When I look up at you looking down
Say it as only a dream
The day you left home you got an early start
I watched your car back out in the dark
I opened the door to your room down the hall
I turned on the light
And all that I saw
Was a bed and a desk and couple of tacks
No sign of someone who expects to be back
It must have been one hell of a suitcase you packed
Twirl me about, twirl me around
Let me grow dizzy and fall to the ground
When I look up at you looking down
Say it was only a dream

I never had a brother or sister to live with, to share with, to fight with or to play with. . . yet I can identify with this story of longing and loneliness and loss, just from moving and relocating away from my friends, in my childhood. Mary Chapin's lyrics and storytelling interwoven through her wistful melody is heartbreaking and wonderful. I think this is one of most touching songs ever written.

I remember exactly where I was… 500 years ago…eating sushi with my wife… when she told me that Glen Campbell was gone…. With food in my mouth , I stopped… my eyes welled… and I remembered all of his places in my life… Almost 35 years ago April 1 , 1989… our first dance was “ Just Because” MCC…. Glen Campbell didn’t write Phoenix, or Wichita or Gentle on my Mind…. But they absolutely are granite monuments … beautiful tender writings of authentic feelings and memories that we all have. Chapin is absolutely a diamond. HER words , HER voice, HER heart, showing us OUR souls. Almost never does the world get so lucky. The week that Ronald Reagan died, the world stopped… and we mourned the passing of a great…. But I wept for another….. he died that same week. And had Reagan not passed away the world would have stopped anyway. And I argue that we would have had ceremonies and news specials…. But none of that happened. Because Reagan passed away…. And you don’t even know about whom I refer. Georgia on my mind was the “ state song” of Georgie, even though years earlier he was banned FROM Georgia for refusing to perform in a segregated theater. HIS sound…. Absolute heaven. And we don’t remember him. Ray Charles I fear the same for Chapin. Only “ we” know her sound. ( although speaking with a flight attendant with Turkish Airlines, I told her of Chapin…. Now another fan… on the other side of the globe) Forty years later …. Chapin’s poetry …. still……. Illuminates and bares our souls… I hope that each and every one of us send to her another thank you. Just because.

I am touched that I touched another… I wish that I could send my thank you directly to MCC…but both my career and my own beliefs prohibit my engaging in social media… If anyone could send to her my peaceful heart…. She and I were ships passing in the night…both actively playing music in the Washington DC area in the ‘70s and ‘80s… many of of those in “ her orbit” , were in mine… but our paths never crossed… I left that life to become an airline pilot, an “ expert” of a certain aircraft which put me in a position to teach military and NASA pilots…. And a senior college flight instructor…. the evening I was flying an airliner, descending into Branson MO…I realized how huge my mistake was…. We were delivering passengers in to Branson…. And I was beside myself…. Not because I was flying a four engine airliner…. But because I was going to see Glenn Campbell.. 1993… Admittedly I have had experiences that so many others never will… but in retrospect, number one.. I am fortunate to have a perfect wife… then…after teaching, playing beautiful songs with sincere hearts was ALWAYS… the universe giving life back to me. Shortly I expect to end this phase of my career… always nine time zones away…. And when I do finally land…. My friends are still waiting to play music with me. Warm smile, warm hearts, a warm hearth… and hugs without borders @@ursulamulder110

@SOLDbyYOU - Many thanks. But a tiny question: was 500 years meant to be 50 years or were you deliberately amplifying the time that has flown by, in a wink, so to speak?? 🤔
@SOLDbyYOU
@SOLDbyYOU 9 месяцев назад
In college a creative writing teacher reminded us “ not to let the facts get in the way of a good story”…. Glenn Campbell passed away only a few years ago…. But that exact moment when my wife told me … is burned into my heart… it could have been yesterday… or 100 years ago… .. Just like in 1988…the exact millisecond when my cave man bachelor self protecting emotional armor slightly loosened and my heart realized that I could never fathom me not living with, protecting or loving my wife ( to be) . That was not an exaggeration… I was listening to a story on NPR… the writer explained that he picked up two middle aged hitch hikers as they traveled from New York to Florida…. But they were on one of the smaller highways..NOT Interstate 95… and when the writer asked “ why were they NOT traveling ( hitch hiking) on I95… the answer was “ it would be easier for us to find a place to stay on this smaller road”…. Which actually translated “ they were expecting to find food from a dumpster and shelter behind any building”…. My heart broke ..and I knew that I would NEVER allow that to happen to my Ann….. After dating for over four years…in that millisecond my heart was allowed to tell me….. I asked her to marry me just a few days after I spoke with her father. The above story is 100% true.

@@SOLDbyYOU It's a wonderful story even if it is true. Sometimes true stories are the best. Here's my true story. When I was 25 and my late husband was 29, he went to Wisconsin to visit his family for Xmas. He hitchhiked back to Southern Illinois where we both were living (and often saw Shawn Colvin at a bar called Merlin's. Back then she often performed with the Dixie Diesels.) and asked the driver to drop him outside town at my house. I didn't know who was knocking, but I was too sick (flu) to do anything but answer the door as I was---greasy hair, flushed from fever, and wearing red and white striped Dr. Dentons. (That's a onesie for those who are unfamiliar with Dr. Denton.) He later told me that the second he saw me like that he knew he needed to marry me. I think he believed I was a complete mess and needed him to marry me. This was not entirely incorrect as I wasn't taking very good care of myself. We had only known each other for 8 weeks, 4 of which he had spent in Wisconsin, so 4 weeks really. One week later we were married. Ah.....Hippie life (sigh). And we stayed married until death did us part, except for one brief spasm of divorce in the early 1980's, after which we had to get married again. And that story is also 100% true.

Our storm came from inside the house - nonstop anger. We'd retreat to our rooms, my sister and I. Sis had no idea that my problems with him long preceded those yellfests and I'm sure she never did find out. But as I grew she'd grab my two arms and swing me around and around under that birch tree under my window. She'd sit on my chest and tickle me til I cried from laughing. We'd walk through The World's Fair, her holding my hand - a thankful distance from those two, my big sis with her kid brother. After school there would be special meals, gravy on toast just for us two alone. Later she'd ask - I have a date, help me pick a dress. She never talked about the secrets I kept from her and everyone else. And when she married years later to that boy I helped her pick out dresses for ... she knew I was alone to fight. Ultimately it wasn't so bad ... I was old enough by then. There's a picture of me, a teenage boy with my head in my hands crying in the pew, during her wedding. She was my special gift from God. She's always been. I've always known you felt regret for leaving me behind ... don't, schwester. One of us was going to get out first. And I made my way in my own time.

You're comparing two different things: Ronstadt and Carpenter were brilliant singers with voices unlike anyone else's. Beautiful tones, excellent pitch, emotive. As singers, no one can touch them. MCC is an excellent writer with a poetic lyric sense, not the singer the other two were, but very affective within the limits of her own voice, as we see here. Tears running down my face. She is exquisite - always, but this may be my favorite performance of hers of all time. The pianist is just stunning, too. Saw her last year sing with the New York Philharmonic - spectacular then, too. She is just sensational.

It was an incredible night with the NYPhilharmonic. One I won't forget. Hearing her wonderful songs with maybe the greatest orchestra in the world for accompaniment was extraordinary. No experience compares to that of a huge, live, brilliant orchestra. The notes literally wash over you. It's like swimming in the ocean - you emerge fully recharged and refreshed. I didn't want it to end.

im a songwriter. the essence is going back into the memory retrieving it and peeking into lens and transcribing the worth and the sense of it where you are at the moment you are "there".

I have watched all the family I grew up with pass on. That is parents, step parents, brothers and a sister all gone. This was all by 45 years old. I listen to this and I'm once again playing in the Oklahoma sunshine. I almost let these losses ruin me, but music like this pulls me through. Thank you Mary and whomever posted this.

One of my favorites from nearly 20 years ago. Now I have a Sr. in HS, her her little sister, a Sophomore. Will be going up to visit UW in Seattle soon, and want to take them to your concert, hoping you'll sing this song for them. It is going to be a long drive next year, from FL to WA... Lots of crying.

Michael Adams - wow, don't how your daughter wound up at the UW. Hope she is still there and is enjoying it. It's a fantastic school and an incredible campus. Can be a bit intimidating, however. I graduated many years ago and still live in Seattle. And now I have a college age daughter a couple thousand miles away in St. Louis. Thank god for face time. I find MCC hauntingly beautiful. Used to listen to hear on long drives. Keeps your mind occupied with all the memories that come flooding in with her songs.

Yes, till just one minute ago, I always thought it was a bout a girl and her older brother. Seems more poignant, and even plausible that way.

Enormously considerate in her performances, Ms. Carpenter sweeps us away with all her gentility, only to flatten us with the power of her thoughts, wrapped up in chords, in the next bar ! Wow !

In my humble opinion, the best female singer/songwriter around. I love her more than Gladys Knight.
