The 100 Series Toyota Land Cruiser and its high society twin, the LX 470 are some of the toughest, unkillable SUVS every made, and you can still get them at a great price! This is the story of my (currently) 250k mile LX470, that I paid 6k for, and have been treating it like a rented mule for 2 years and this thing loves it! This is maybe the most overbuilt vehicle of all time that still has leather and AC and it's a killer value!
Thanks for watching!

Had a 2001 Tundra with the same drivetrain that passed 500,000 with the stock alternator, PS pump, AC that all still worked great when I upgraded to a new Tundra. I did have to put Thorley headers on it to fix the manifold leak. I live in the north woods of MN. Nowhere worse to test a vehicle’s durability.

Pro tip: Throw those chrome lugnuts in the garbage. The steel nut under the chrome rusts, which swells the chrome cap. When you go to remove the wheel, it rounds off the nut. I dont even play that game in my shop. Unless they're brand new, i cut the chrome off and pound a 18mm socket on the remaining steel nut. The customer then gets new steel nuts.

So stoked your wrenching on yours! We’re in Maine and have a well maintained Florida 03 LX470 we bought last year. I did some baseline maintenance to get it to a known quantity. NO ONE around us wants to touch this thing so I’m left to my own devises. Currently doing ride height sensors on the front end after putting up with the bouncy front end for long enough. Right now we’re stock height too w slightly oversize BFG ATs. Maybe a ironman in the future; we use it the same as you do, soccer mom/dad, daily driving abuse etc etc.. I’ll be watching!

I am in Aus and have a 2001 LX 470, bought it for a great price just before Covid hit, love this vehicle every thing you say about them is spot on, just finished a major upgrade and turned it into a full on camping machine, twin lithium batteries under bonnet, 3000 watt inverter, drawer fridge under bed platform,270 awning with walls, solar panel on roof rack, twin jerrycan holder also on rack with spare tyre, in Aus a lot of these are converted to run on LPG which is more than half the cost of petrol but the tank for the LPG is where the spare tyre used to sit, drove the car for 3 months before realizing it didn’t have a spare. Love your winch set up be interesting to see how it performs.

Made a cable similar to what you used for my utility trailer winch. Except I bought the connectors and a long set of jumper cables. Bought two sets of connectors cut the jumper cables and Soldered the connectors so I can use the jumper cable as intended or disconnect the last foot of the jumper cable and plug it up to the winch. I mounted a RV bumper mount receiver and mounted it to the trailer. The winch is on a receiver mount.

Love the 470. I bought one back in 99' and wish I never sold it. I was with him until he went with the receiver mounted winch. They work for straight or close to straight pulls, but beware of anything that's less than a 45deg pull to the side (anchor points are rarely where you need them). I've seen several rip the factory hitch right off the truck. Also, I'd invest in synthetic winch line because it's safer, stronger and lighter. $.02

Frame rust is the Achilles heel of these vehicles for sure. I've owned an '87 Land Cruiser from California and a 98 Cruiser from New Jersey. The 87 was obviously rust free and immaculate when I got it. 10 years of NY winter driving and the frame was so rusted through it was not repairable. The 98 had been rust proofed every year by the previous owner. After scraping off the thick layer of crud the frame was total Swiss cheese. It's inevitable.
