I agree, and so that you do not feel alone, I watch and cringe in my ignorance. But there is always a chance for my stupidity to rise to a higher level.
I only once felt smarter than the contestants. When season 3/4 winners battled each other there was a picture sequence of a drop of water falling, a sun(set) and a stone. And my brain immediately went water/fire/earth now only air is missing. And the contestants didn't even guess, both teams didn't have a clue. Made me feel really smart and it looked to obvious. (The answer was behryum or sth, cause each picture inspired the name of an element hydro = hydrogen, helios = helium etc etc) i still think my answer works just as well
I spent 2 minutes thinking and couldnt come up with anything, then i typed out "aeiou" to have a visual aid but still couldnt think of anything, then after like five minutes all i could come up with was "aeon". And tbh I only recalled this from the "Final Fantasy" video game series, wasn't even sure it was an actual word until I googled it. Just goes to show how insanely brilliant these show guests are, able to not only think of 3-vowel words but decipher them as well...
This is one of the times Only Connect got it wrong. Panic at the Disco didn't get their name from the Smiths song, it's from a band called Name Taken, although the song is also called Panic.
@@johnwiddopIt was largely accepted it was from the smiths to the point Brendon had to go out of his way and correct the public. So wasn't really 'wrong' as the information wasn't fully known and was believed to be true. Brendon only stated that in 2016 (i think, don't really remember) way after this aired.
@@thisguy976 Have I asked the scriptwriter? No. However, if you think it was said unthinkingly then you have to explain why it was followed by "And if you enjoy that kind of spectacle don't miss the _Eastenders_ Christmas special."
@@thisguy976 Good grief. The closing remarks are SCRIPTED. Like the introductory remarks. They don't rely on the host to make those things up on the spot. Regardless, if she had slipped up they would not have relied on her making something else up to disguise/justify/explain it. They would edit it out. You can't seriously think it was an accident.
@@jasperiscool controversial inasmuch as they created controversy (heated discussion and/or prolonged public disagreement)... not because they're bad lol
I was about to write a reply but Nat had already said it... i.e. controversial does not equate with bad/hated/disliked etc. It can be negative OR positive. Usually both.
"Space Invaders 2" had colour strips behind the glass to give the illusion there was colour. A tactic was called "Double Red". Where, because the missile the invaders shot only appeared 2 characters below them (meaning the space directly below them was safe from being hit) you would make a gap between one invader and a block. Sit in it, wait for the invaders to come down so they were directly above you. move tot he side of the screen, then, in one move, move back to the safe "gap" shooting each invader you passed under as you went. If you missed one shot - it was game over. And as you deleted row after row they got faster. In the last row you needed to shoot the one invader you'd left to the side as well. Which meant a pause in your firing rhythm - which was probably the most common cause of failure. The very last invader on the screen getting through. Anyway... the two strips at the very bottom of the screen were indeed red. So Vicky's derision was (slightly) misplaced.
Love the introductions. Remind me of ice breakers I've come across in big companies who ask you to tell a quirky fact about yourself. Love the row question. The only one I got. And the fact the contestants didn't get it gives me a slight feeling of superiority. Love how Victoria disparaged them for not getting it.
If there's one thing geniuses lack, it's usually common sense or the blindingly obvious. As such it was the only question in this whole episode I got right.
Not that strange, since she quite obviously was searching for a connection between the terms. Notice how she mentions Mouline Rouge in relation to "Windmill" immediately afterwards.
This is the first time I am watching the show and I was confused as hell what friggin wall they were talking about and why was she so crossed. Then, later on, came the wall and I was all....aaaaaah.
Being an Aussie, I've never seen this quiz-show before, but it's brilliant! Also why I didn't know the answer to that sequence of the Only Connect Wall colours!
The Young Vic and the Old Vic in the same street, the Young Vic half way down the Cut, SE1, opposite Short Street, and the Old Vic on the corner of Waterloo Road. The Young Vic used to put on some really Avant-Garde Theatrical experiences and could rustle up a pretty mean Charbroiled Burger and Chips in the early 70's! I remember coming out of the Young Vic, close to midnight, it had been raining while we were in there, the streets were drenched but it was a really warm evening and Mungo Jerry's In The Summertime was playing from somewhere, I can still smell the aftermath of the Market Place which was nearly the full length of The Cut, I was with (excuse the pun) a motely crew, Shades, Budgie, Beefy, Shiner, Paddy, Smiffy, Dutch, Simmo & Pete! Pete got his nickname of Pete because his last name was Cook! IYKYK. LK, DS, JF, JG, VS, MF, MF(Not a typo) & *YvA* , the Beauties of SE1... Oh, Gordon Bennett, it's Mary Hopkins all over again!
I’m 11 years late but I just wanted to point out that in the round with the upside-down letters; the letters aren’t turned upside down, rather they’re rotated 180 degrees. If it were the case that they where upside-down q would be to b as p is to d, whilst u and z wouldn’t work.
If you actually turn something upside down, you have to rotate it 180°. On the other hand you can't turn a "q into a d" or a "b into a p", that works only with a mirror.
I'm sorry to be picky, and I can't be arsed to check if anyone else has pointed this out, but at 07:17 the letters are not upside down, they are rotated 180°. An upside down "q" is a "d"...
I can't believe that I correctly guessed Only Connect's Connecting Wall after one clue, but I didn't have any idea that the fourth row was turquoise, so I wouldn't have got it.
This show is quite possibly the most-middle class thing in the universe. When Victoria tries to rouse them into a karaoke rendition I have to hide behind the sofa.😩It’s just so wrong; like watching your dad dancing or mum trying to chat up a man 20 years her junior.
David Brewis is a man who really wanted to be team captain. He keeps saying "next" when it is the team captain's role to do so and he has, as he had when they were on the full series, arrogance and a desire to take control and ignore his team captain. In one episode he even pressed the buzzer with Katie looking very annoyed.
My knowledge of b-boy culture paid off! Well, I assume I got that one right... one sec, better watch... yay me! Although apparently Victoria likes me less because I knew that one.
I'm Australian and I was surprised at the Gabba answer, I thought football was just soccer to Brits and they'd call other football codes 'handegg' or something lol
Why are the round 4 always of different lengths? Sometimes they go on for ages! I almost feel a conspiracy in that the producers wanted the Crossworders to remain champions because if round 4 had gone on, the Epicureans would have beaten the Crossworders because they are so damn good at that round!
What exactly is their spacing protocol on the missing vowels? TH RSS MTH NG BTMR Y PPP NS? Why do some missing vowels get a space and some don't? Why are there spaces where there are no missing vowels at all as in the space between the R and Y of Mary?
Pardon for being a crass moron in the comments for a show about intelligence, but boy do I envy David Mitchell for getting access to that marvelous pair.
The clues are invariably too hard for the teams who either can't answer or answer at the last clue. Edit: yeah, just 2 questions out of the whole lot (?20 questions) answered before the last clue. And the epicureans answered none before the last clue.
