I remember actually getting one of them right on Only Connect. Once. I think.

I have never seen Only Connects. I have no wish to do so. And I have no idea what it's all about. But if this is how it works, it won't make ME feel stupid. It will make me feel that the producers of the show are stupid.

QI annoys me because it is rare that their trick questions are actually upright and straightforward, usually they’re quibbling about definitions such that even knowing all the information I still couldn’t answer the question the way they want me to. I like Only Connect because I feel like it plays fair and, though I don’t get many, I feel like I could get them.

8 out of 10 Cats does Countdown doing Only Connect. The letters are a guaranteed 9, but tyou only get one letter at a time and they're scrambled. for the numbers round the chooser picks a hieroglyph with a predetermined array instead of choosing "four from the top and one from anywhere else" or whatever.

@@idrees1995 I'm not sure but I think it's supposed to be "You've made an old man verry happy..." but that coming from stephen might not be seen as appropriate after what jack did, so he flipped it... I think it's about play on words, but nothing about erectile dysfunction... Stephen is like 60 ish here and jack is in his 20's.

Just a reverse of ''you've made an old man feel very happy'', as in his body is obviously more youthful so he has made him feel particularly old but he enjoyed seeing it, so he was saying it made him happy as well.

I had seen Tom Scott's videos before and then found out about Only Connect. Took me years to make the connection that it was the same guy I envied even though he seemed familiar :)

Roj H No it is the Eye of Horus. According to Egyptian myth, Horus lost his left eye in a struggle with Seth. The eye was magically restored by Hathor, and this restoration came to symbolize the process of making whole and healing. Osiris was the father. But who cares, they were really evil aliens anyway.

The hieroglyphs are just stand-ins for the questions. At some point, they used greek letters. It just gives the candidates something to call out to "choose" a question. I'm pretty sure that what question is behind which symbol is random.

There are episodes of Only Connect on YT. If you have the kind of mind that likes the obscure information which comes up on QI, I'd recommend seeking them - you'd probably enjoy Only Connect.

@@decodolly1535 I've seen some clips of it (since), but I don't think it's that entertaining. Maybe it's because I'm a foreigner, so a lot of the language concepts pass over my head. But maybe it's just the game show format I don't like. I love 8/10 cats does countdown, but actual countdown is super boring. Maybe I'll just wait for cats does only connect.

@@jonatanrullman The story behind is previously the choices were between greek alphabet letters. The show received some criticism for trying to be too fancy for making those the choices, so in response, they changed from greek letters to egyptian hieroglyphs, basically taking a stab at the critics.

Greek letters to hieroglyphs, yes, I also remember her talking about it. Started watching OC after a while, now it's one of my favourites.

@@imokin86 that would be the other way round Egyptian transitioned into the Greek alphabet (or more specifically a variant known as the Coptic alphabet) during the Ptolemaic period (the last before Roman rule).

Yeah, she said in another QI that the first series used Greek letters but people found that pretentious, so they were like "okay, fine fine we'll change it... now you can choose instead your Egyptian hieroglyphic"

Arif Anuar Well, yes. Because “Only Connect” is typically recorded without a studio audience, the producers probably told the QI audience *not* to clap or react during the start of the segment, to honour the spirit of the show.

It definitely went both ways! My favorite bit is when Stephen said something to Jack Whitehall along the lines of: "After the show you'll discover a whole new meaning of "storming the Whitehall"". Sadly I can't for the life of me remember which episode it was.

Every time I've heard about Only Connect, it's cause Victoria was a guest on another show.

I think it's been going for about 7 years. Originally on BBC 4, therefore unwatched except be nerds (me) , now on BBC 2, so it gets some normal people as well now. Hardest quiz on TV, easily beats that new C4 one presented by John Snow (the newsreader, hope I got the right name). Some shows on RU-vid, if you watch it prepare to be baffled, amazed and to shout at the screen when you think you know and they don't.

It surprises me that you haven't heard of it because I've watched the first three seasons and I'm not even British! It is a devilishly cerebral quiz show, but Victoria always puts in some sly, sarcastic humour so it's still enjoyable. I get giddy when I get even one answer per episode right before the contestants!

I imagine that for QI purposes it was the same question for each of them.
