Let's clarify some things: Sonic 2 was going to have time travel but unlike sonic CD these are necessary to pass the game. - "Winter hill" its original name is "Rock World Zone" which is the past version of "Sand Shower", Rock World Zone (Past) is a snowy rocky mountain that was going to use the Sky Chase Zone theme, that's why the Sky Chase Zone theme is too quiet to be a "Chase" level. -Wood Zone: In the betas this level uses the Metropolis Zone theme which was just a placeholder, Wood Zone is the current version of Casino Night Zone. -Hidden Palace: Here things get a bit tricky as it was planned to use 2 songs for this level, one for the level itself and one for a cutscene that would most likely use "Unused Track 10". -Sand Shower Zone: A desert zone that is often confused with the "Dust Hill Zone". Sand Shower Zone uses the Oil Ocean Zone song, while the original Oil Ocean Zone theme was "Casino Night Zone (2 Player)". -Cyber City / Genocide City: The future version of Metropolis Zone which originally used the Chemical Plant theme (PlaceHolder)
Small correction, chemical plant music in cyber city was also a place holder. As has come out in the past couple of months, it was discovered that genocide/cyber city was a 3 act zone and that wing fortress potential uses, though not confirmed, old assets from cyber city. It's also noted that wfz has a space-y type music and that death egg zone originally was an in space 2 act zone most likly using wfz music. With cyber city using just Dez music.
Good comment though as most of what you stated about sand shower and rock world zone are usally completely told incorrectly, though you can't blame people this games history is incomplete and complicated and happened in only 9 months
@@peppermintgamer3856 Wrong, in fact Cyber City Zone was a 1 act level that became act 3 of metropolis. -WFZ music already exists in sonic 2 beta. -The same with Death Egg already had a music in sonic 2 beta. -Cyber City Zone and other scrapped Zones don't have an official theme. Edit: (*This Didn't Aged well*)
@MagoTheCat also as for music, all 2 player music and wfz and scz music were in the early proto types. But it wasn't later in development when they cut a bunch a content (mainly levels) that they reused music for 2p stages and created scz and wfz very late in development. And if wfz didn't exist till late development, wasn't part of the concepts, but had it music implemented very early on... it stands to reason it was either a theme for cyber city cone or for death egg zone. which as these themes are based on concept art and were completed way before everything else, it stand to reason the early in space death egg whould have the wfz music, but of course like a lot of thing we really don't know the truth, and we won't untill prototype or document from development find there way to the internet. I mean oil Ocean zone in the prototype had the 2p casino night zone, and the level slot for what would have been sand shower zone had oil ocean music assigned to it. Or the fact the level slot for the winter zone(rock world zone) had scz music which does have a wintery motif.
@MagoTheCat I seem to keep finding a comment is gone, but look up sonic 2 cyber city zone. There a retro discussion thread about it development on page 14 they start to discuss a info dump from 6 months ago. It really did have 3 acts and you can see this reflected in the time travel island concepts as genocide city has 3 labels, genocide 1,2,&3.
