"Maytime Waltzes" ...
Some detail of the beautiful, fully restored 1905 Dentzel menagerie carousel at Ontario Beach Park, Rochester, New York (its original location). The audio is from a recording I made back in 1995 of the carousel's wonderful 1987 Stinson 165 band organ (which has been MIDI-operated since 2003). The tune is "Maytime Waltzes" (Sigmund Romberg, 1917) from roll no. 6511-B (actually this is half of the tune, but the second half is the same as the first).

While the carousel's build date is 1905, there's been some speculation it was actually built before that as an all-stander machine. The raised platform for the jumpers provides space for the poles to go down underneath. There are a few other two-level platform carousels out there. Two that come to mind are the Dentzel at Pullen Park, Raleigh, North Carolina (the one most similar to this one) and the Herschell-Spillman at Oaks Park, Portland, Oregon.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion... I myself want an organ that looks and sounds just like this one! You must agree though that this is better than no façade at all (I'm thinking of an organ at a park that rhymes with Teapreeze).

I like being able to see the pipe work, as well. Perhaps something of a WurliTzer 153 styled front might be more fitting for this organ, esp. near the bottom of the façade.

Thanks. I combined this with some shorter clips and dubbed in the entire tune... plays fine on my computer but won't upload right. Has to be one unbroken video, I guess. At least this was long enough to use half of the tune.

Wow, I've never seen a split level carousel like that. Do you know why it was built like that? In any case there's nothing like riding a classic carousel with an opperating band organ. I 've got two videos on my channel of the Patrina Williams Carousel built in England in 1881 whan I was at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, NJ.

@anglerfly Sorry to say I'm not surprised to learn this. That's happened when I've been there, too. The employees don't like the organ and they take breaks from hearing it sometimes. The most important thing is that it's always playing for carousel rides (I think ... I'm pretty sure that was the case last year).

It was, but not since 1919. It's now a nice public park.

I like being able to see most of the pipes, though. Most of these "furniture front" Stinson 165s have an unpainted (stained) case and more of a gold on the scrollwork. I know of one with a nice painting on the top panel.

*Carousel Update:* The rounding board of the two red lipped African American boys with a rooster was forced to be removed, due to it's offense and racism and is now displayed in a "Take It Down" exhibit. Since 2018, while the carousel was being repaired, that panel has been replaced by one of a black panther.

I think that sound should come before looks, but, honestly, the simple WurliTzer 105-style façade doesn't work with an organ this size. That, and the colour scheme is a bit bland for my taste. No scenery panels or anything. Just white and a flat, burnt gold.
